I've noticed for the last couple weeks (roughly) when I launch CKAN it shows the black window with blinking cursor much longer than normal. I just timed it at 1 minute 29 seconds. That seems typical now. After that delay, the white GUI launches and it's totally normal, works great. Seems like some server timeout delay?

Expand

You might be able to get a clearer idea of what's taking so long by running it with the verbose flag from a cmd window:

ckan --show-console --verbose

or this for even more messages:

ckan --show-console --debug

There's no guarantee that there will be a message indicating the exact problem, but if you consistently see a particular message before a long pause, that would at least help to narrow down what else is happening.

Sidenote for others that use CKAN exclusively... there are some mods that can't be installed with CKAN. One of them I just discovered is Sound Track Editor Forked.

Expand

Yes, that mod unfortunately requires installing DLLs in weird places (which are Windows-only to boot).

Are you referring to the text mode UI that runs in the terminal window?

Yes.

OK... assuming the left number is ms, it's taking 84 seconds to display anything in the cmd window. It's stuck waiting for something. I can't think of what changed except Windows or AV updates. I'm using v1.30.4.

I tried the "--debug" too but it scrolled off the window and cut the beginning off.

PART 2: So I tried it again with internet disconnected and it did not have the long delay.

It might have problems downloading the build map and timing out or something.

Can you download the file with a browser (when your internet is connected of course)?

The file loaded in Chrome in under 2 sec.

Still 84 sec for the first line in -verbose log. Some firewall/ antivirus issue? It's weird because it's not being blocked, just slowed down. I'm on Win10.

Well, now it's different... normal start time actually. I didn't change anything. Then I noticed Malwarebytes finished running a scan. Then I tried CKAN again... and it went back to the long delay! Well, there's no entry in the Malwarebytes log about it. I added CKAN to allow it to access the internet... no change. Then I added it to the allowed list to stop checking it for malware and now it works normally.

So it was scanning CKAN for 84 seconds every time it launched and then decided it was OK... so there was nothing in the log. Well, thanks for listening!

Amazing work! This is way better than downloading manually.

By the way, I'm using this for many mods, but some mods don't appear, most likely they don't support this feature yet and you need to download manually.

Expand

Have you tried extending Compatible Game versions in the settings? Maybe that could be a reason why some of them do not appear.

If some are still not showing, would you mind telling us which one? We might be able to include a new mod.

Glad you enjoy CKAN :)

There are 7 kinds of mods:

  1. Mods that no one has asked to have added to CKAN yet
  2. Mods that are no longer accessible for download anywhere
  3. Mods that are only hosted on servers that don't allow API access, such as Curseforge
  4. Mods whose authors don't want them listed in CKAN
  5. Mods that have some technical limitation or quirk that prevents CKAN from being able to install them
  6. "Joke" mods
  7. Mods that are listed in CKAN

Welp, the load time is still screwy. My last post was premature. It's usually 84 sec but I saw 21 sec once. I turned Malwarebytes off and it didn't help this time. I rebooted the router and it worked normally once, then 85 sec the next time. Tried fresh CKAN download, no change. :/

Hi, I've noticed that CKAN doesn't run when PC is connected trough a VPN tunnel. When launching .exe, it just opens an empty command prompt window and then nothing happens. Turning the tunnel off fixes the issue. (Windows 10)

That sounds like the symptom @Krazy1 described. So my guess is the network connectivity with the VPN is (partially) broken.

Note that CKAN doesn't do any special handling for VPNs. It simply instructs .NET Framework's HTTP client to download the file.

I wasn't using a VPN but it got me thinking. I just changed my network connection from "public" to "private" and that fixed the load delay... so far. I don't think I ever changed that so it's weird that it changed behavior suddenly. And weirder that it wasn't consistent. MS update? driver update? I don't even know what's happening in the background on Win10. Well, I hope it keeps working.  Thanks

I'll have to play the guessing game since you didn't give us any information. But I assume you see some sort of error message when starting CKAN or doing something in it.
We've had many similar reports in the past from people in China, it appears GitHub is (partially) blocked there. There's nothing we can do against that, I'm sorry. You'll have to try to circumvent the censorship yourself.

No idea if you take suggestions, but could we get customizable fonts and colours or at least a dark mode? My eyes hurt.

Expand

Yes we do, but preferably they are written in a friendly tone. "at least" and "My eyes hurt" doesn't sound as nice as you might think it does.

Colour customization/dark mode is already supported, see our wiki.

For fonts it should be the same deal, this is entirely handled by the OS. So configure your system to use whatever fonts you like ans it should also apply to CKAN.

Sorry, mate. Anyways, I'm too scared to even think about doing anything to my registry.. would love to attempt to change the background colour of a mod manager software and then get bootlooped.

Yes, you can manually install mods side-by-side with CKAN-managed mods. However one should exercise caution, as it is very easy to break your installation this way.

 Got this loading CKAN...

The following mods have had their metadata changed since last update:

- FerramAerospaceResearchContinued 3:0.16.0.5

You should reinstall them in order to preserve consistency with the repository.

Do you wish to reinstall now?

Expand

yes...

Why did it try to install Tweakscale? I already had TS, but *.12 not *.13. I tried CKAN update and I have the latest CKAN version. Restarted CKAN, same thing.

@LisiasCan I blame TS somehow?

So third time I didn't retry the FAR install, CKAN finished loading (it showed TS *.13 is available for update) I quit and reopened CKAN... and it opened normally. I updated TS and KSP launched normally. So "nothing to see here" ?

Ah, looks like a problem with our "metadata changed -> reinstall" logic. Basically the file in question, "999_Scale_Redist.dll" has been moved from TweakScale to a new TweakScale-Redist module.
In practice there is no file conflict, however during the reinstall it apparently can happen that it first prompts you to reinstall the dependent mod which pulls in TweakScale-Redist, and only later would prompt you for TweakScale.
We should probably aggregate all mods with changed metadata and prompt the user to reinstall either all or nothing.

To work around this, click no when it asks you to reinstall during the repository refresh, then reinstall TweakScale through the modlist first first (using right click > Reinstall), and then FAR Continued.

No you cannot blame authors for CKAN problems, never do that. Please don't ping them for CKAN problems in general.
