Welcome to my Mission Log!

Although i know many people won't read this, or be well interested in it, I still find it enjoyable to write stories about my missions.

Even though this is mainly going to be about shuttles, it will have other missions too.

Any missions I have done previously unfortunately won't be logged.

Key

(Obsolete) [Mission Name]-C - Stands for 'Classified'. These missions are separate from the main missions, for example, STS-3-C is not related with STS-3. This naming system has now become  OBSOLETE since the new STS lettering system to prevent confusion with missions of similar name.

STS Naming System (1979 and above)

The new STS naming system, which will be introduced in 1980, will be a revised version of the current naming system. The first number is for the year of operation. (1981 would be STS-31-A).  The second number is for the launch site. 1 is for the KSC, which is where most launches will happen, and 2 is for Woomerang. The letter at the end of the launch name stands for the launch of the year. For example, the 3rd launch of the year would be STS-31-C.

STS-1

Part 1/2

July 8th, 1978 - July 16th, 1978

"The Greatest Test Flight"

Space Shuttle 'Tranquillity' is seen preparing for luanch. July 7th, 1978.

July 8th, 1978. T- 7 minutes until launch. The crew arm has been retracted.

T- 2 minutes. The ET's "LOX" vent arm has been retracted.

T-10.. 9.. 8.. 7.. Ignition sequence START. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1..

Lift-off of Space Shuttle Tranquillity, off to preform the beginning of a new era for space transport!

32 minutes later, the Orbiter finally reaches orbit. It begins its 8 day journey, conducting system tests, and testing the shuttle performance.

STS-1

Part 2/2

July 8th, 1978 - July 16th, 1978

"The Greatest Test Flight"

Tranquillity is beginning its descent, the automated computer pitches 27 degrees up.

The crew on Tranquillity get a great view of a solar eclipse.

After a long 8 days in space, the crew finally begins to renter.

James described the re-entry effects on the cockpit as "Breath-taking" and "Pretty" to look at.

Tranquillity finally begins to land. Its gears are deployed for the first time.

"Welcome back home, Tranquillity."

Mission Post-Review:
Successful mission. Its systems proved reliable, and they preformed all accurately.

SP-1 'Gemstone'

"The beginning of a Space Station"

July 31st, 1979

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturn IB, Carrying the Gemstone Core Module is preparing for launch. It will become the worlds first modular orbital space station. It will be significantly easier now that the shuttle was proven as a capable machine.

"Lift-off of Gemstone, bringing a new Space Station idea to the table!"

Gemstone powers through the atmosphere.

Separation of the first stage! Fairing deployed!

Gemstone will be entering an orbit of 125km. It will be sustainable for a long time.

The 2nd stage is deorbited to prevent space debris.

The station now orbits freely, waiting for a shuttle to dock with it and set the space station up, for its first astronauts onboard.

Mission Post-Review:
Half-Successful mission. The module was supposed to have a probe core to control it, but it failed. However, the systems on the space station are functioning, and oxygen is onboard.

STS-3-C

Part 2/2

August 11th, 1978 - August 13th, 1978

Classified

During STS-2 planning, the US Army came-a-knocking. Realising the capabilities of the STS program, they ████████ ██ █████ █ ███ █████████ to orbit. STS-2 was moved to STS-5 because of this, and was jumpstarted to STS-3-C, being the first classified mission of the bunch. Nobody knows what the payload is.

Lift-off of Tranquillity!

Tranquillity is maundered upwards to prevent photographing of the payload from below.

███ ███ █████████ ███ launched into orbit. They ████ ██ ███████ controlled from the ██ ███████ ████.

Comprises with the US Army allowed KASA to preform scientific experiments on the same mission. They preformed sun tests, similar to Skylab.

This mission is classified. The science results went well, however. Successful mission.

STS-3

November 4th, 1978

The Ganymede-Gemstone Mission

STS-3 will be the last mission of 1978. Next year will hopefully bring some better goals. This will be the second module for the Gemstone space station.

November 4th, 1978. Tranquillity is T-8 minutes away from launch. The crew is the same crew of STS-1. Jedediah will be piloting the shuttle.

The crew arm is retracted. T-6 minutes until launch.

LOX Tower retracted. Launch sequence is now controlled by the internal computer of Tranquillity.

T-17 seconds.

T-9 seconds.

T-6 seconds. Auto-sequence start.

Lift-off of Tranquillity! Sending a new module up to the latest space station, and the first modular one in orbit!

Tranquillity is seen with its SRB's, T+1:00 into launch.

"We have a problem!"
"Whats the problem?"
"Something just snapped on the side of our orbiter. Get a look!"

"We will look into it."

"What do you mean by that? Its urgent!"

"..."

"You're missing a wing."

"..."
"What do you mean we're missing a w-"

The crew of Tranquillity are killed. T+1:48 seconds into launch, a large piece of the external tank fell off and broke the wing of Tranquillity.

The crew survived initially, but seconds later after receiving word of it, the computer encountered an error and released the SRB's early. The orbiter was destroyed instantly and the crew were killed.

Post-Mission log:
The mission was a failure. We lost 4 of our best astronauts, as well as our payload. We are investigating the accident.

In all seriousness, I really like the direction this playthrough is taking. I enjoyed the realistic style and the top-tier photo editing. By the way, what tools did you use to block out STS-3-C's payload, as well as make that newspaper coverage of STS-3?

I used paint.net for it. It looks sketchy, but its genuinely good software. Pretty bare-bones paint editor.

Also thanks for the feedback. The first 3 posts were pretty low quality, i mainly just wanted to test the water and see if people liked the direction. Good to hear people are enjoying it.
 

For others, the crew that perished in STS-3 won't be returning. That means no more jeb. (even though he did actually survive.. somehow? - realistically doesn't make sense)

January 8th, 1979

An unknown spacecraft was seen landing today at the KSC from spacecraft enthusiasts taking photos of the preparing STS-4 mission.

It was believed to be launched by a Saturn IB, as an unscheduled Saturn IB was seen launching on July 9th, 1978.

A enthusiast took photos of the weird spacecraft approaching and landing.

Shortly after, the enthusiasts were told to leave the area, while military vehicles and KASA employees approached the spacecraft.

February 31st, 1979

SP-3

Classified Launch

On such short notice, a Saturn Program flight was scheduled. The payload is kept classified for this launch, but with that miniature shuttle looking craft? Rumours have been floating around that the payload may actually be that unnamed spaceplane.

The Saturn IB, taken about an hour before launch.

Space enthusiasts begin to snap photos of the spacecraft, due to its unusually wide fairing.

T-10 seconds until launch.

T-9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

Lift-off of SP-3! The first spacecraft to launch at the KSC after the STS-3 disaster.

First stage separation. The fairing will be deployed in orbit to prevent easy viewing of the payload.

The Saturn IB has gotten into orbit. The fairing is deployed.

Although the payload was never confirmed, poor planning of its orbit led space fans with telescopes capable of viewing objects in orbit to take photos of the classified payload. The fans would track the orbit until it disappeared. However, the unidentified object never landed. It added the suspicion into it having enough manuverability to shift its orbit.

Post-Mission log:
Mission is a success. Payload is to remain classified.

To anyone curious, i haven't abandoned this - I've just been taking some time to think of what to do next, as well as plan them out properly.

Just wanted to give another update, schools getting in the way of everything (not a surprise), so i'm currently unable to make proper progress on anything related to this sadly. You can expect smaller projects to pop-up in other threads however, unfortunately i am also kinda burned out right now, so it may take a little longer than previously expected. Sorry
