What did you do in KSP1 today?

I actually had a pretty big accomplishment today. I had a successful rendevous with the Mun without patched conics. Very low tech rocket. Probably my earliest flight round the Mun ever. And it really didn't seem that hard. Guess I've finally put enough hours in.

Decided to start a sandbox after things started to get expensive in career mode. Started by making a renovated version of my Shenron Space Station (I actually liked the version in the sandbox premades but I added a science module) in 2 launches and then sent my Crew Delivery Craft to pick up Jeb and Valentina so we can prepare for Duna. I also designed my 1 Kerbal planetary lander, the Tyson Jr. I am playing with designs for a bigger lander, but for now I just want to make that first landing on another planet.

Stuck another cyclotron in my orbital science facility, and then actually used it - it's been sitting in orbit for quite a while doing nothing because all my crew are tied up in pointlessly complicated return trajectories... and it's not even at the right planet yet.

The launcher... hmm:

( Anyone who's walked round central London should make the connection... ). I used to walk past it every day, waited for liftoff every time.

How did you get the Mun looking all rocky like that? It looks really cool!

I think that's new surface texture from one of the visuals packs, that one is probably KSPRC going on the other screenshots. It might be a Kopernicus-based mod though.

Played with Kronal Vessel Viewer. I love how it renders the Nastybird!

Also, I've been doing a series of "Kerpollo" missions, which are exactly what you think - CSM/LM Apollo-style mun landings, using this guy, the Emperor I:

That's possibly the craziest reentry scheme I've ever done. But why does this stupid cockpit burn up even at 1,5 km/s if it points forward?!

Re-entry heating?

You'll have to be more specific, I'm not skimming an entire 30-minute movie and trying to guess which moment you mean.

I keep toying with stock Apollo style missions, adding tons of unnecessary equipment so I actually need three lift stages in the stock solar system.  I kind of dig the cute little ascent stages!  This mission with zero reaction wheels, so lots of RCS fuel and thrusters.  Zero reaction wheel is kind of a fun new challenge, if you're looking for a different way to play for a bit

I'm beginning to think I can't into Mk3 SSTOs. I've looked at every tutorial I can get my hands on, and...nothing.

Moar boosters.  The answer is always moar boosters.

... just in the case of SSTOs those boosters need to remain attached to the craft and are typically air-breathing.

Today I had the thought "hey, 3400 m/s is a lot, and it's spent pushing through the atmosphere. Imagine what I could do with that if I got a launch stage to orbit!" and did the obvious thing of putting a couple giant boosters on the Nastybird and sending her with a satellite to Duna. The tiny cargo bay isn't meant to deploy satellites when the external tanks are still attached (they're usually jettisoned after ascent before circularization is done) so getting the little thing out was a bit of a wiggling game, but it still has enough delta-v to return to Kerbin and hopefully aerobrake safely to get them home. I'll post updates if that's successful. (PS this is all in Sandbox)

The last screenshot is of a nice little gravitational anomaly I came across in another save. And by gravitational anomaly, I mean "buggy ground scatter". :P I found it funny, in any case. :)

Right. I'm just having trouble getting enough delta-v to said boosters without diminishing the performance of said SSTO (i.e., adding more airbreathers decreases available LF for both the jets and the rockets, SRBs are nice on the thrust end, but only hinder the SSTO after they're used up, etc.). The best I can manage is a mid-altitude heavy cargo jet.

Spent the day modifying @MichaelV2.0's Rover the Puma to suit my needs as whats become the flagship of the KTP for the moment

repaint mostly. learning new skills in Paint.net.. ive got my own wheels to use but gave  up after they kept exploding suddenly.. although they worked lastnight! :( so I went back to using the wheels from the Buffalo rover pack.. quite a mix of 2 seperate machines

I added some air vents, little details but.. the colour sadly I didnt have the UV map for so I didnt know where things went for the body. I tried many colours, white, orange, black.. but KSP renders colours really oddly in game..

the moment of inspiration came while listening to youtube playlists and a sad militant song came on the playlist I was using in the background..

lightbulb moment went on!

Land trains were a military invention, used in ww1, ww2 and cold war..

if I cant pinpoint where to paint.. i'll just add details where I can

the rest?

Australian Woodland Camouflage!!

a light bulb idea of randomness... it ended up making the most hostile looking thing ive ever made in KSP

For spaceplanes there's also MOAR WING. I'm not sure Mk3 is really doable without Rapiers these days - we used to make Mk3 stuff ( or bigger ) ages ago without them obviously but lots of things have changed, not least engine performance. This thing is all stock parts though, & capable of going to Minmus and back. ( Yes that is FAR, but that doesn't change anything in space and if anything it makes the atmospheric bit harder... )

@Overlandthat's a very neat rover I wasn't aware of before, thanks for alerting me to it! colours will be affected by specularity, you get used to it.

No ksp was played and won't be played for a month till my exams are done (turns out neurology is hard :( ) But I'll be back with a new save in the ever increasing version number of ksp (maybe with updated mods by then!)

Those joints are exactly what I've been looking for for my rover project. Where'd you get them?

If anything, that design's more outlandish than what I've been doing. And yeah, I'm using rapiers. 12 of them on my last design, to be exact. I'm doing all stock, too. The only difference in wings that I can see is that you're not using BigS parts.

My main issue seems to be that I can barely get to mach 1, and barely get to 8.5km.

Good luck on your brain science so you can get back to your rocket surgery.
