ESA fires an air-breathing electric thruster for low orbits
hms_warrior replied to Gaarst's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The actual Isp of this Engine would be infinite, since it doesn't use any internal fuel/propellant. Would be interessting to see how low they can get with it. The denser the atmosphere, the more reactionmass they have to work with --> more thrust per watt. What would be the benefits of a 90km high "Orbit" be? Maybe for ultra-details google maps?^^ -
There are several possible reasons but one i find more likely is that you simply run out of power. Your core stores only 5 units and uses 1.08 per minute+ your reactionwheel. If your Solarpanel is facing the wrong direction it might not produce any /to little power.

actualy it should be not to complicated (actual code monkey here) Most likely they just iterate over the gameData Folder and load each mod. If they create a Folder for each save and iterate over that instead...done. (However that would mean you have to create your savegame first, than close the game, copy your mods in the new folder and restart). They could do a simple text file for each savegame with the mods to load, but than you need an ingame screen to select the mods...that would mean actualy a bit of work. (like you select addons in WoW)

Would SSTO's Honestly be better than multistage rockets?
hms_warrior replied to Spaced Out's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Well the basic idea behind SSTO is not only SSTO is it "reusable SSTO that you just need to refill". In that case, a two stage rocket needs to be but together again after each launch. This means time and possible failure points. a "rSSTOyjntr" would just land, open it's cargo bay, get the next payload pushed in, tanked up and is good to go. -
Ideas Needed for Mars spacecraft
hms_warrior replied to LukeSkywalker's topic in Science & Spaceflight
thermal-nuclear rockets would be the technological closest technology for getting there and back, Nuclear/fusion pulse drive would be the next step. Full fusion rockets (maybe with inert gas mixed into the exhaust for extra thrust) would be the full sci-fi variant (needs some breakthroughs or massive money injection into research to fit into timeframe) Edit: and the obligatory link for all new sci-fi writers searching for realistic spaceship technology: http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/ -
Near-future Space Battleship Concept
hms_warrior replied to Joseph Kerman's topic in Science & Spaceflight
if you want something historical and more realitic to orientate on : Project Orion was one of the most ambitious -- and radical -- spacecraft concepts ever developed. Central to the concept was substituting conventional chemical rockets with a string of low-yield nuclear bombs "spit" out the rear to create a series of powerful blast waves that would accelerate the spacecraft to high velocities. The "piece de resistance" of the Orion development project was the Orion Battleship, a 10-story-tall spaceborne "doomsday" weapon that would carry more nuclear firepower than a nuclear submarine. Its proposed armaments included 500 20-megaton thermonuclear missiles, 3 naval Mk 5-inch gun turrets, at least six Casaba Howitzer nuclear directed-energy weapons systems and numerous 20-mm close-in weapons. Propulsion would consist of several thousand 5-kiloton nuclear pulse weapons (that would also serve as powerful EMP weapons if detonated in the upper atmosphere). Six "landing boats" were on board for use in crew transfer, resupply, emergency escape, etc. When the Battleship concept (including a scale model) was shown to President Kennedy in 1963, JFK was reportedly so freaked out that he immediately cancelled the project altogether. http://fantastic-plastic.com/ProjectOrionBattleshipPage.htm and here is the link to the full book : https://www.amazon.com/Project-Orion-Story-Atomic-Spaceship/dp/0805059857 -
A Orion-drive spaceship facility. Think big. (and the parts for it, after all it's 1960 tech^^). Ps: yeah i know there are two mods for this.

totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
hms_warrior replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Not entirely true. If the chute opens while pointing straight ahead it will most likely just wrap around the capsule... but that's an extreme case. Just wanted to point out that a parachute-capsule still needs SOME control too ^^ -
2.5m heatshield doesn't protect hitchhiker pod?
hms_warrior replied to Mitchz95's topic in KSP1 Discussion
There is an other, obvious explanation: The Orbital retrograde/prograde is different from the surface/atmosphere prograde/retrograde. Basicly, if you have your spacecraft set to hold prograde/retrograde on your orbital speed, you are at a slight angle towards the movement through the atmosphere. This angle might be enough to expose parts behind your heatshield.- 33 replies

Stumbled about this on NSFF and since it sounds cool i just drop it here: https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=43344.0;attach=1438419;sess=0 Basicly it is a combination of a termal nuclear rocket feeding linear aerospike nozzels sitting on the turbine-fans of a turbojet-engine... or something like that XD Have fun with it ;-) PS: i want it for KSP!!! PPS: the guy who designed it was senior engineer for the Raptor engine...

My explanation for dark matter. It's that simple.
hms_warrior replied to MedwedianPresident's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Multiple parallel Universes? DC Comics incoming! Maybe we are visited by the Flash soon ;-) Now the serious part: Since it would be very unlikely that our "next" universe moves exactly parallel to us this should mean that the points of "4-Dimensional attractions" should change their position at a observable speed. If ithose places stay largely on a spot (the force of dark matter attraction doesn't change it's value) than it is most likely not a parallel-dimension-mass. -
TD Industries Orion bits [Alpha]
hms_warrior replied to TiktaalikDreaming's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Hey just a quick suggestion: Since this mod doesn't seem to be a "copy part folder into GameData and done" mod i think a simple txt file with a step-by-step instalation guide would be realy helpfull for noobs like me. Anyway the pic looks awesome^^ i realy like the "steampunk" (rocketpunk?) look with the seams , rivets and porthole-like windows. -
Maybe it would help if you Americans stoped using these aweful feets and pounds and inches and instead used the metric system like basicly everyone else...

Space Junk; What will we do about it?
hms_warrior replied to Mr. Peabody's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Allready work-in-progress: http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Engineering_Technology/Clean_Space -
You can test it out for yourselfe! Just put your shuttle on the pad, hit alt+f12 and deactivate Gravity

SpaceX goes with sci-fi stuff. I vote for red 1, red 2 and so on. Obviously red 5 will allways shut down it's sensors shortly before landing and STILL hit the X on the mark.

Future propultion systems for spacecraft
hms_warrior replied to Night_Wing_Zero's topic in Science & Spaceflight
On the matter of metalic hydrogen: I am at work and can't watch the video right now so i don't know if the stuff i write here got addressed there but: The main Isp increase of a metalic hydrogen rocket isn't in the high energy release but in the fact that the resulting gas would most likely be monoatomic hydrogen instead of the diatomic hydrogen a nuclear rocket use as propellant. that means each atom has roughly half the weight, and therefore, going with E = 0.5m*v² the exhaust velocity (Isp) would be 4 times as high for the same amount of energy per mass. So a metalic hydrogen rocket can run a lot colder than a nuclear rocket and still get higher Isp numbers. ( of course that is all highly theoretical)
