Cubinator's 8-Bit Drawings and Music And Stuff [Latest: Brown Dwarf]
cubinator replied to cubinator's topic in The Lounge
The scatter tool is pseudo-random, so it's algorithm generates a grid pattern in this image. For some reason, I can discern it quite easily on PC, but not on mobile. I can barely see the lines on my phone, but I can see the whole grid on PC even between the differently colored regions. How do you guys see the grid?- 176 replies

Cubinator's 8-Bit Drawings and Music And Stuff [Latest: Brown Dwarf]
cubinator replied to cubinator's topic in The Lounge
I've never thought of it that way before. You're right! Simple shapes are done with line, rectangle, "circle"* tools. Things like star fields, gas clouds, and rocky surfaces are done with a "scatter" tool that has various settings and is quite versatile. For instance, the cryogenic gases around the Saturn V's first stage, the black hole's accretion disk, the star field around the black hole, and the moon cave were all made with the scatter tool. More precise shapes, like characters and details are done more by hand, like the hardware on the outside of the Soyuz capsule. For planetary features, I usually layer a bunch of effects. See this picture: Boundaries are rarely very crisp on planets and moons (Earth is an obvious exception) so I use strokes with low opacity to give my planets a more authentic look. So, no, I don't place each pixel individually. I have basic painting software tools (and a few less basic ones too!).- 176 replies

I think I actually figured that one out because the path you have to take follows the path of the curled up snake.

But I heard there is ice cream on that Dragon! All joking aside, I watched the most recent Soyuz docking, and (I assume the procedure for Dragon is not so different) basically they do a ton of leak checks and very slowly equalize the pressure between station and visiting vehicle, because if the station were to depressurize it would probably have to be evacuated (anyone that survives, at any rate), even with the emergency closing hatches, and it would be really bad even if the whole thing doesn't have to be scrapped. So that's a situation they will take their time with, making sure every part of the seal is absolutely safe before going in and getting their ice cream.

With a lot of practice, you should be able to rewire your neurons enough to actually make your mental field of view a volume instead of a plane, and thus be able to truly visualize 4D shapes. I think that imagining being able to see in all 3D directions at once should help with finding a vector perpendicular to all of them. Yes, although it would not go through but around 3D obstacles. The smoothest sphere would act like a pizza cutter if it hit them. Maybe, but other physical laws might be different too, allowing for very different forms of life.

Right, but then the rocket flies northeast to get closer to the same plane as the ISS, so the ground's velocity directly under the rocket actually changes during flight.
-
Besides, the speed of the ground changes with latitude.

Last night I dreamt it was late at night and my house was full of tarantulas of all kinds, making webs everywhere. It was kind of scary because I can't tell whether they are New World or Old World tarantulas (New World have less intense venom and are slower but can fling irritating hairs at you, while Old World ones have very deadly venom and are very fast) but also really interesting. At least I know their threat pose. I tried taking a picture with my phone but dropped it, and it broke badly. I was really disappointed about that until I woke up and realized my phone is fine. Then I was disappointed that no tarantulas live in my area. After that I dreamt I was going up on a Falcon Heavy, but came back down for a really short time and would go back to the orbiting ship in a Falcon 9 the same day.

I think it was Galaxy 1. The main level had an underwater racetrack where you race a manta ray, and a really huge tree I think. This tile puzzle was off to the side, accessible via star cannon.

So forgotten they were even forgotten here. I always try to remember to drop a like on the OP of a good mod I've tried, because a lot of them do take quite a bit of work.

Weather forecast could potentially go sour for Idaho Falls, but it's probably all right. I'll have to see how it pans out.

Did you know you can get a batch file to run itself recursively?

When I was a kid I had one of those octagonal folding snake balls (like these) and when I unfolded it I would pretend it was the water slide level from Super Mario Sunshine and design new paths for that level. Then I would fold it back up and pretend it was the level in Super Mario Galaxy that has the same shape and you had to walk on the tiles in the right order to avoid falling into the black hole in the center. I just remembered that little anecdote today after...I don't actually remember what. But it's something worth remembering!

I noticed the grid fins were doing a lot more correction during the landing burn than usual. Was it windy, or was the guidance system upgraded to be more precise? I noticed it landed right in the middle of the X whereas sometimes it tends to be a little off.

This sounds really cool, and a lot of fun, but- remember, rocket fuel is dangerous. Always be careful about how you deal with it. Maybe you'll eventually have a rocket big enough to launch a small camera or other payload? Say, a little aluminum foil man?

I like how although this thread is open for all wildlife, most of the pictures in it are of arthropods.
