i encoutered a serious problem with a Stock Vulcan (and normal Energia). Energia M works perfectly in small size, but getting bigger shows trouble with the amount of fuel and efficieny and thrust of the core. 4 Mainssails produce enough thrust, but eat to much fuel for the normal sized NASA tank with proper length. i would need an engine with an ISP around 400 for the liquid Hydrogen/Oxygen coreengines of the real Energia / Vulcan an i would need slightly bigger tanks. with some magic in clipping, it works. but both clipping workarounds i tried increase a lot the partcount. the test vulcan had already ~270 parts ... without fairings ! second problem, while normal energia works "just" well with the engines (and the clipping), Vulcan gets some serious lag trouble ... because of t eamount of engines i use. the Zenitboosters have 8 engines each to get enough thrust, 8 boosters mean 64 engines plus Core ... 68 and more engines are not cool anymore the test vulcan can lift 200 tons to orbit but it's a slow and laggy ride. and normal sized Kerbin is not good for a nearly 2-3 minutes orbit insertion burn... one Energia engine for the upper stage is seriously not enough for pushing 200 tons to orbit. in real life, it could worked, because the radius of the orbits are far greater so it had more time. But in normal sized kerbin, there is not enough time to spend the roughly 1000m/s dV for the orbit insertion for a normal 75x75 orbit edit: omg.. just googled Energia and Energia M datasheets to doublecheek power and payloadcapaticities ... and i noticed i did a big mistake in enginepower distribution between Zenitboosters and core. boosters must be stronger and core weaker ... LOL

N1 was not a rocket without future ... it was more "stable" in construction then the Saturn V it only used 30 engines in the first stage, because the russians were never able to build big engines during like the american F1 that time, only later there were plans as heavy payloadlifter for several (military)payloads. no future? i dont think so. it only failed, because of politics and money.

Beale? i just finished reading the Soyuz Manual book and i notcied something about the fuel inside the Soyuz. besides that only half of the service module contains fuel in modern Soyuz since the T-sries, RCS and mainengine use the same fuel. early Soyuz and LOK used to kinds of fuel for RCS and main engine. i saw, that Bobcats Soyuz and the Sojuice of the HGR pack use monoprop as only fuel for both RCS and main engine. what do you think? staying oldschool with 2 seperate fuels or going modern with only monoprop? i would prefer to have monoprop and LF/OX, staying oldschool which would fit the "early space exploration" feeling.

suggestion for balance: reduce the amount of LF/OX in the service module to 50% , 45 LF, 55 OX and add several hundreds of electric charge, like 400. without batteries, the Tantares will get in trouble with a very smal amount of jouce. with the current full tank, it can easly go around the mun and you had in mind to maybe change this Beale. with the sugested 50%, it has around 600m/s dV and will need help to get to Mun (or useing LOK service module instead) i had in mind the real layout of teh Soyuz SM, where only half the space actualy holds fuel and rest is for electronics, lifesupport etc. and nice sideeffect: center of mass moves a tiny bit upwards for a more perfect alligment with my RCS thrusterplacement

got the inspiration to rebuild my Soyuz to version 3.0 ... final shape archived, but i need to reduce amount of parts now. But it has realistic RCS now edit: the LOX tank is only half full, total dV is around 400 m/s. total weight of the spacecraft is ~4,5 tons

about the fuekl amount in the service module of teh Soyuz: don't forget it has to have monoprop and batterypower. so i would go with only half of the capaticity of a FL-T200 tnak for the beginning. personaly, i would aim for a total of around 400 or 500 m/s dV for the final Tantares. so totaly not able to do a mun flyby witout help like the real one edit: judging after some techincal cut-trhough drawings in the awesoem Soyuz manual book, only half of teh service module contains fuel for the main engine, rest is filled with electronics, batteries, oxy-tanks, monoprop tanks and much moe to fullfill the role of the service module. edit2: here some pics: propelant tanks are number 20

reworking my Proton for 0.9 from scratch. 21 ton dummypayload to 75x75 Orbit. It still need some fixes here and there, but this is teh result of one day of work
