Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
Gargamel replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Have we talked about "Another Life" yet? Cause it's bad. I can accept the somewhat stretched advances in technology they are pushing, FTL drive, suspended animation, AI. I dig it. Sci-fi at it's best. But the complete lack of protocols or logic in the show are killing me. Hey, we just had a serious bio hazed contamination on the ship, let's go land on another planet and completely ignore any safeguards at all. Lack of uniforms? Maybe that's why there was a mutiny..... And nervous systems can't move on their own, although that scene was pretty epic. The show has it's moments, but then it falls flat on it's own face writing. The are forcing every starship sci-fi trope into a condensed format. -

It is much easier for us to understand what you are trying to say if you do not go back and edit your post in response to later posts. This only adds confusion to the problem. If you think you are having issues communicating due to a language barrier, feel free to post in your native language, and then provide an english translation. We have enough multi-lingual members here, somebody will eb able to help translate. You speak English far better than I speak Russian, so nobody will ever fault you for having a shoddy translation.

Will Skyhook tech be available in KSP 2?
Gargamel replied to Bej Kerman's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
Most of us aren't wealthy enough to own a supercomputer good enough to model the entire universe, and still keep a playable frame rate. -
Yeah.... I'm 2 hours into the start of WWI, and nobody has fired a shot yet..... well... one guy did.... But my god... a 20 hour episode? He's the next Ken Burns.

[KSP 1.6.1] Stock Visual Enhancements [v1.4.1] [20 March 2019]
Gargamel replied to Galileo's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
No worries! The best thing you can do to help us is give a full list of your mods, plus post your log files on a hosting site and link them here. That way we can go through them and help figure out what's going on. Other's may also ask for other stuff too. Where to find log files: -
Matt Lowne’s entire channel has been copyright claimed
Gargamel replied to ProtoJeb21's topic in The Lounge
True, but I was trying to convey the point that regardless of the means of Matt acquiring the music in question, it is still owned by the rights holder, and it is up to them to claim it. Perhaps a better metaphor was needed there. -
Matt Lowne’s entire channel has been copyright claimed
Gargamel replied to ProtoJeb21's topic in The Lounge
If somebody hands you a VCR "off the back of a truck", it's still receiving stolen property, regardless of one's intentions. Same here. He used an IP that was owned by another entity. They are fully within their legal rights to request he not use it, regardless of where he obtained it. What timing? Is there a nefarious plot to rid the world of KSP gameplay videos? The claims occured when they got noticed. And when one of these contractors sees one video from somebody with IP in it, they'll take a look at others the person has produced. Once they have compiled a list of infractions, then they report it. From what I can see, they did strike individual videos, but because most of his videos used that music as an intro, then most of his videos got hit, which is essence striking his whole channel, but only because of the way Youtube policies are set up. Because it up to the copyright holder, or their designated agents, to make the claims and make the Host of the Content (Youtube) and the content Creator (Matt) aware of the infringement. This can take time due to the signal to noise ratio. Smaller channels like Matt's will fly under the radar until they have made enough content to get noticed. In Matt's case, he had been using what he thought was royalty free music for a ling time, and the impact was far greater. The onus is on the IP owner to make the claims, not the Host. In the US, free speech is only protected from governmental interference, not private entity. If a newspaper refuses to publish an op-ed column just because they don't like it, that's their prerogative. If Matt does take this to court, and I kind of hope he does, and the IP owner's representatives do not show, then the case is tossed out, and ruled in Matt's favor. That's not a violation of anybody's rights, that is just the way court cases work. If you get a speeding ticket, and actually go to traffic court to contest it, and the issuing officer does not show (which happens often enough), then the case is tossed out. There is no rights violations though, you don't get to sue the police department for a lawfully issued speeding ticket that was never prosecuted. There has been no perjury yet. Perjury is the act of lying under oath. That requires a court case. In this situation, one party claims they own something, and they have to show proof. If they fail to show convincing proof, then it's still not perjury, it's just them failing to support their case. Of course we do. He's a solid member of the KSP community at large, and we wish him the best. But I'm not sure about the effectiveness of a few dozen (or even a few hundred) fans attempting to boycott two of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. And as to starting a new video hosting service, why re-invent the wheel? There are already dozens, if not hundreds of similar sites already on the web. Why not find one that works and use that one instead? -

Gargamel replied to ProtoJeb21's topic in The Lounge
Wait, wut? I'm not sure we're talking about the same incident here any more. What civil rights violations? Matt (unknowningly) used Copyrighted material illegally in a bunch of his videos. The copyright holder dinged him for it. The cause of it seems to be Youtube mistakenly hosted the file to start with. None of that is a civil rights violation. Not even close. To even suggest that is a huge insult to any person has had their civil rights infringed upon. I'd really like to have an intelligent discourse on this subject, but it becomes very difficult when there is nothing but rhetoric and unfounded supposition being thrown around. -
This little tutorial should help: As for missiles, there really isn't a "reliable" stock missile. I mean, you can easily build one, but it might not always end up where you think it should. Kerbals, ya'no? You might want to look up the BDarmory (or what the current version is calling itself these days) mod. Sound about what you are looking for.

Matt Lowne’s entire channel has been copyright claimed
Gargamel replied to ProtoJeb21's topic in The Lounge
So let me get this straight.... Sony makes a supposedly rightful claim to an IP they own, which was supposedly listed as copyright free in a YouTube library. YouTube somehow loses track of this song in said library, and passes the copyright claims onto the end user. And we're boycotting Sony? What do we want!? Justice! When do we want it?! Right now! How are we going to get it!? Ummmmmmm...... -

For a guy (I think) still living at home with his parents, making about $75,000 a year (based on a variety of youtube income tracking sites), I'm pretty sure he can get a decent enough lawyer to fight this fight for him. -

Now, before we go and get our pitch forks and torches, let's stop and think about something. You have no idea who you're actually mad at. Sony isn't the one who filed the copyright claim. Most of the digital Copyright and DMCA claims (like downloading bootleg movies and such) come from third party agents that have signed up the copyright holders as clients. These small companies are hired to protect the copyright holder's IP's across the internet. So they are constantly searching the internet for infringers, and hit ISP's and web sites with DMCA claims when the discover one of their clients IP's being stolen. The client themselves don't actually do the hunting or the claiming. Furthermore, these companies are usually paid per claim that survives any appeal process, so they are basically encouraged to claim as much as they can. So while you can get angry if you want, don't get angry at the IP holder who is just trying to protect their asset by employing an outsider contractor to do so, be mad at the contractor for making this claim. And good luck figuring out who that contractor is. -

I've tried that one, it's pretty good, but he seems to drone on, at least for the couple episodes I've listened to, but I've heard enough good reviews of it, I may give it another spin.

I have about an hour drive to and from work every day, and radio/music gets boring, especially since I play music for the ten hours I'm at work each day, so I prefer to listen to podcasts. I prefer science and tech stuff, but also comedy and general making podcasts, but I'm not limited to those genres. I figured I'd share my favorites and see if anybody would do the same, as my 20 hours a week in the car quickly runs through what I already listen to. (If you happen to list something that is NSFW or would possibly violate our Community Guidelines, please do no link to it directly, this includes podcasts with nothing more than vulgar language). RadioLab - Basically a couple reporters go out and investigate interesting stories. Always a good listen, I don't think I've been disappointed in an episode yet, even the ones I thought I would have no interest in (like the guy who collects elevator buttons), they managed to make it interesting. Reply All - Similar setup to RadioLab, but Internet focused. Kinda goofy and quirky too. But they find interesting stories, or even urban legends on the Internet, and get to the bottom of them. StarTalk - Neil Tyson and friends talk everything astrophysics. Used to be one of my favorites, but NDGT has gotten a bit full of himself of late, and I really don't enjoy listening to him much anymore. But the Questions (Cosmic Queries) episodes, Guest hosted episodes, and the rare topic are still a good listen. Infinite Monkey Cage - Hosted by Dr Brian Cox and Robin Ince, Similar to star talk, but they cover many more topics, and they actually let their guests speak! And while it's topical, the testing phase for the land speed record car is currently under way, they have an episode where the driver talks about what it's like to drive that fast. The Technical Difficulties - The audio podcast that spawned Tom Scott and friends YouTube videos. I don't think they're producing more podcasts, but they're fun to listen to. SciSchow Tangents - From the same crew that makes SciShow (et al) on YouTube, a few of the cast and crew discussing various topics in a pseudo game show format. Some serious science discussed in a non serious format. 50 Things that Made the Modern Economy - A bunch of mini (~10 minute) podcasts that explore the various inventions that drove the modern world, from fire to the steam engine to wifi. Sounds boring, but it's actually quite interesting. But even though I recently discovered this one, I have exhausted all their episodes. Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project - Adam Savage of Mythbusters and his crew from Tested talk about various making projects and a variety of topics. On occasion, I'll toss on PTI - The ESPN sports talk show. And a couple Wood Working podcasts, probably boring as heck to non-woodworkers, but I enjoy them. Woodtalk and Shoptalk, although Woodtalk is on semi-permanent hiatus. And of course, the podcast I've been listening to the longest, Hollywood Babble-on, where Kevin Smith (Clerks) and Ralph Garman discuss modern nerd culture and show business in a comedy show. What do you guys listen to?

Gargamel replied to ProtoJeb21's topic in The Lounge
To be honest, I wasn't surprised at first. Most of his older videos, before he became a staple of KSP videos, were of a "music video" variety. Ie, they included Music that was in the mainstream by popular artists. When I heard him say the claim was on supposedly copyright free music, I was surprised. Hopefully he and YT can get this sorted out. If they don't, and the story is as Matt says it is, then shame on YT for pulling this stunt. -

If you are having issues getting your boosters to clear your main core, slap a couple sepatrons near the nose cone of the booster. One on each side of the booster, pointing towards the main core. Have them fire when you stage the decouplers. Might require a little tweaking to get the intended behavior, but they will push the boosters away from the core.
