Yes but KER defaults to Vacuum. And (IIRC) remembers how you last set it.

Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame

To be fair, plenty of foreign cars have also exploded in American movies... -
What can a scientist in my Star Wars fan fic be working on?
Superfluous J replied to Maximum7's topic in The Lounge
You could go the funny route and have him studying Macguffery. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGuffin in case you don't know what a MacGuffin in. But I don't know, not many scientists in Star Wars. Seems that most things are already known or the people don't care. Maybe hyperspace travel? Trying to make it more accurate? That would explain why Solo could come out of hyperspace basically inside an atmosphere.- 88 replies

What are some useful parts you don't use enough?

They said useful parts. -
Science Basics
Superfluous J replied to Elroy Jetson's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I find this to be a fantastic resource whenever I have a question about science. Which, after almost 6 years you'd think I wouldn't have any more. But I do. All the time. https://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Science -
What are some useful parts you don't use enough?
Superfluous J replied to EchoLima's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I have never, ever, ever had an autostrut-related kraken attack. And I use them on pretty much every craft I build. I strongly suspect there is a certain safe percentage of parts you can have autostrut on. I do it on maybe 10% of my parts. If you autostrut everything to "root" (by default, I hear some do) sure you're asking for trouble. If you autostrut side-mounted tanks to grandparent and engines on your dropped launch stages to root, you shouldn't have any problem. Even with weird crazy stations. -

All the ISRU stuff. Usually if I bother making a ground base for drilling, I can't be bothered to use it because it's quicker/easier to just get the stuff from Kerbin. -
I can't consistently land horizontally ANYWHERE without cheesing reloads.
-
Oh and while we're showing off Eve landers, I don't have a pic but below is my video for Evepollo. I land on Gilly, fill my tanks with ISRU, then land on Eve without any heat shields by slowing down with all the fuel I'd gotten from Gilly. Then I fill with ISRU again at Eve and launch back to space. Eventually. After many failed attempts.

KSP 1.6, variant and deltaV glitch
Superfluous J replied to debug's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
I'd still suggest exiting the game (not alt-f4, actually to through all the menus including confirming you wanted to exit on that 10th confirmation dialog box) and reloading. Just in case. You don't say if you have it on Steam or not, but if so I'd suggest verifying the files. If not, I'd suggest installing it in a different folder and copying your save. If those don't work, verify the problem exists in a NEW save, perhaps (on Steam) uninstalling and wiping all local content, then reinstalling. After backing up your current save(s) of course. -
The Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge Continued
Superfluous J replied to JacobJHC's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
If you don't care about the actual flag itself and just want to achieve "plant a flag" they can also plant it and immediately pick it back up. That way a chaired Kerbal can get "Plant a flag on..." experience from all worlds they visit. I liked that too. I frequently store 2 probes like that so they don't clip into each other, one upside-down on an upper fairing tier, but never thought to do that with a mini-plane. -
The Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge Continued
Superfluous J replied to JacobJHC's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
You know as well as I do that if they hadn't, people would be raging about how cheaty it is that they have infinite flags. Though the developer you want to be annoyed at is probably HarvesteR, as that feature has been in the game - as far as I can recall - since before I got it in 0.22 -
Aerodynamically it looks fine. I can't tell the dV from looking at it though. I'm a much bigger fan of Vectors than Aerospikes. My first Eve lifter was Aerospikes and then I tried Vectors and never went back.

I don't have the mod that allows offsetting anywhere, so I couldn't rebuild your craft exactly. However I think I corrrectly counted 15 Oscar tanks on each side, so just made it with decouplers and no fuel lines. KER basically agrees with you, enough to guess that the differences are just due to the slightly different configurations. I then teleported it into a 9999Gm orbit and was going 342.4m/s . After exhausting the side tanks, I was going 1502.6. After the Vector was done, 2759.0. Finally, the Terrier got me to 5716.4. Minus 342.4 on each means the stages had 1160.2, 1256.4, and 2957.4 respectively, for 5374 m/s. My guess is that the 8km/s estimate is based on the stock game, where you literally cannot build your rocket. A downloaded craft file will run in the stock game, so if the challenge accepts it that's fine, but you can't really use it to set the standard that people who don't take such measures can expect. And it's probably not helpful in a thread where someone is obviously struggling with their first attempt at getting off of Eve.

Why is there a decoupler on top of the right side drop tank, and a nose cone (only) on the bottom of the left tank? At the very least, I'd think those tanks should have 4 nose cones. I ask because I'm building this now to see what it says and how it flies. EDIT: I see now. It's more shenanigans. Not that I'm against shenanigans, so long as the challenge accepts them.
-
I'm sorry but you're incorrect. They're obviously tweakables.

DRAG DRAG DRAG that thing is draggy. Most importantly, it's draggy on the top so wants to fly backward. Parachutes? Decouple them. Top of the pod? Cap it. Fuel ducts? Lose 'em and use cross-feed. Wings? Too high. I'd drop them myself and use the Vectors for steering and stability. And leave the gimbal at 100. You WANT lots of gimbal. But literally any upward facing surface without a nose cone will kill you. Downward facing (engineless) ones will hurt too.

What have you been playing recently? (Other than KSP)
Superfluous J replied to a topic in The Lounge
You should, seeing as they're releasing the next major version (0.17) in about 10 days. As for me, I've been absolutely lost in Slay the Spire. I bought it over the Lunar New Year sale on Steam and have just over 60 hours in it I'm starting to feel like I'm not a total newbie. I've won a grand total of 2 times in normal mode, and am going for the 3rd (with the 3rd character) as we type. -
It took me a LONG time to figure out why you were bringing that external command chair to Laythe. Surely you could get back to your mothership in Tylo orbit with the cockpit? I couldn't see the fuel savings on the way back being worth the loss on the way up. Some times, I think Joolrise is the main reason I still play the game. Of course, by now I figured out why you brought that chair I love the two-seater design of your orbiter + lander. makes me think for some reason both of a small Star Trek warp vessel and those space fighters they flew in Stargate. I see your Pol lander had the same troubles mine did And well done! I can't wait to see you discover a whole new planet in the next and final mission! I do! It was fascinating to watch/read/follow. I did a normal Caveman run but do not have the fortitude to grind science and money to a scale anywhere near what's needed for NCD. I can totally appreciate though that ability in others, and going interplanetary under ANY caveman conditions is something to be lauded.

Anybody who bought the game before the cutoff date can transfer to Steam. It also cancels your ability to download from the KSP website IIRC. I don't have any direct experience with it as I bought the game after the cutoff date.
