  1. I love seeing that. I managed to catch it twice over the years
  2. Unfortunately, that's not how fission works. To turn 25% of an atom into energy would require hitting it with 25% of its mass in antimatter; you can't just fission it away. This is overly simplified, but the gist of it is: Heavier elements are formed by lighter atoms fusing. If that fusion releases energy (hydrogen fusion), then it will take that much energy to break that new atom apart again. But if fusing two atoms (usually heavier atoms) takes energy (consumes energy), then fissioning that new atom will release that energy again. Years ago, I learned from an astronomy textbook that a massive star burns up (fuses) the lighter elements sequentially up the periodic table (releasing energy) until it tries to fuse iron, which consumes energy. The core then cools and the star collapses until the outer atmosphere of the star rebounds off the core in a supernova, creating all the heavier elements in the process. Depending on the mass involved in the collapse, the remnant is generally a neutron star or black hole.
  3. It could happen eventually. It gets harder and harder to get a new mine started these days due to resistance from environmental groups. At some point the cost of making a mine environmentally friendly enough to get built will likely cost more than mining it robotically from asteroids. And with the current effort to shift towards renewable energy sources (with the requisite battery storage), a large, steady supply of rare earths and platinum group metals would help immensely. But it requires some entity willing and able to make the necessary and risky very-long-term investment
  4. As a buddy of mine liked to say, “Lower it,, paint it black, flames down the side.” But he’s usually talking cars or trucks...
  5. Longest burn yet at BC if I’m not mistaken, so, radiative or other heating on dry brush? One thing for sure, shouldn’t be anything flammable left in the area now...
  6. Ducks have a heat exchange network of intertwined arteries and veins leading to their legs, such that the cold blood from the feet is warmed before returning to the main body, sending cooler blood to the feet so not as much heat is lost. Same could be used for human gill membranes
  7. Enzymes to handle worlds with cyanide-laced atmospheres. And gills and webbed feet and hands for waterworlds
  8. Been there. Didn't bite through, but gave myself one heckuva fat lip
  9. yeah, it was something from that era/age/epoch, probably a little newer than that (not much). I'm sure it was on one of the "Big Shiny Tunes" CDs that were popular back then
  10. When I started seeing grey in my beard.... Also, they played a song on the radio they called ‘vintage,’ which I still consider new(ish), but I don’t recall the title
  11. Maybe. I clicked on the stream a page back and had no way of knowing it wasn't live.... doh. ya whoop, my bad. I'll go sit in the box and feel shame... Okay, found the EA stream. That looks better, if a little dark... *whistles innocently*
  12. Hold at 2 minutes... Lotta vapors around the base... This is my first chance to watch one of these... E go for test! 90 seconds Bob *burp* They should have saved the Dragon name for this beast, with all that fire belching. Test aborted after about 3.4 seconds of firing...
  13. Stream is guesstimating 3 minutes.... 20m hop.... and how tall is the hopper? is it even going to hop its height?
  14. I play Candy Crush to pass the time while carpooling etc. And GasBuddy to try to find cheaper gas when it’s my turn to drive. I use to play the various flavours of Angry Birds.
  15. Fair point, but yet, the hotel we stayed at across the road from Disneyland accessed the rooms (most of them anyways) from outside, even if you had take the stairs or elevator to the fourth floor. Actually, it was the same at our resort in Mexico.
  16. The local radio station that's on all day at work has a song called "Gloria" on the power rotation, which means I hear it several times a day. I don't care for it, and it's starting to get on my nerves, because that’s not a knife not Gloria. This is a knife Sparta Gloria! (Oddly I was unable to find the Jimi Hendrix version)
  17. I was trying to find decent tourist contracts to fill the inaugural trip (in my new 1.7 career) of the Space Camp Bus. Well, maybe these ones that wanna visit an asteroid... Any asteroids around? Quick, KerbMan, to the tracking station! 'Lo and behold I quickly find an E-class asteroid on a collision course with Kerbin, impacting in about 100 days! It looks like I have a new toy to play with. First step was to task the lonely Sol station with seeing if it could manage a rendezvous before it entered Kerbin's SOI. With some playing around, the astrogator (some no-name, which is why they were in such a forgotten station) managed to plot an intercept ten days before the SOI change, passing 50km away at less than 350m/s. As a bonus, it swings a wide orbit through Kerbins SOI first, giving an opportunity and a staging orbit to send tankers and the Space Camp Bus (just launched after spotting the 'roid) out to meet Sol Station as it swings through in 50-some days, on it's way to the asteroid. It looks like this career has a little extra excitement going on. I've got some planning and work to do. Kerbal Construction Time will give this a little extra pressure, but there's lot's of time (famous last words when I need to match a high hyperbolic orbit)
  18. Last I recall from an Elon tweet a month or three ago, the VacRap was put on the back burner to focus on getting the SeaLRap flight-ready for testing StarShip and then SH. VacRap dev will continue when it is needed. They’ll take the ISP hit in the meantime to speed development towards flight testing.
  19. The trailer is a 2005 Jayco Baja 23’ that I bought off Craigslist. It only sleeps 4 but the outside kitchen at the back is nice. GVW is 6500 lbs; not light but not too heavy for the truck to tow comfortably
  20. Perhaps, instead of a thread for each exciting new movie coming soon, they could all be posted here. Post a trailer, and discuss! What caught my attention this morning: Jeri Ryan. 'Nuff said. I will try to keep the thread title updated with the most recent movie posted. Or not
  21. I tend to look at dimensions past the third as a co-ordinate system, which works well with time. What is/are the conditions at x, y, z, t? Fifth dimension would be which universe in the multiverse? etc... Just add another co-ordinate axis "normal" to the rest as you go up the dimensions...
  22. Well, yeah, expected result. I think you missed the next paragraph where I made sure the next impact was while the science station was in sunlight, but I received no message of any kind about the impact, aside from it being noted in the F3 window. Yeah, a battery would be nice
