Perhaps by "body fins" they mean the canards? Or perhaps the landing gear is a separate component mounted to the fins? -
For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I can’t imagine any material that wouldn’t react with antimatter, unless it is antimatter. The most resistant material I could think of would be neutronium, but the density would be insane. But it would still react with anything heavier than anti-hydrogen. -
Notice the red trim on a ship in one scene of the cinematic? Either that’s to distinguish different players‘ ships in multiplayer, or different trim colours may be “for sale” Or worse, I’ve been playing with Kerbal Construction Time lately. I could imagine a scenario where “Your Jool 5 mission cannot be launched yet because the launch pad will not be available for 30 days due to reconditioning after the last launch. Pay $5 for instant reconditioning or $10 to build the Woomerang Launch Complex” (Bonus offer: slap the author of that run-on sentence for $20) I should stop giving them ideas....

Well, the cinematic trailer seems to show crews of three, with a kerbelle (presumably Valentina). So one of the original three will probably be relegated to the astronaut’s complex. Or Bob the science guy will be left bobbing in the ocean near the Island Airfield. Jeb is the hero. He’s not going anywhere except up....

KSP2 Hype Train Thread

Just need to come up with one-point-twenty-one jiggahypes! -
I got in the car for my ride home, fired up the forum on my phone, saw the banner and had to double take: Wait, what!?!?!? Hells to the yeeaaah! Ride home took an hour due to construction, but still didn't quite finish reading this thread (which started just after my last break ended). I hope it includes some KAS functionality. You mean I'll be able to be StrandedonSuperEarth? The pictures were such a tease. Now excuse me while I finally go watch the trailers. I'm sure it will be...

HISHBN - How It Should Have Been Named

A beautiful day at Chilliwack Lake... Mountain Lab Heaven: A ball and a beach. The shirt (a freebie from a 2-4 of Molson Canadian) says "From Far and Wide," but it makes me feel "From Fat and Wide." Or maybe that's the Molson Muscle I think she would have happily swam out there forever... Some of the mountaintops around the lake... That may be a closer view from a different angle of the distant peak in the "Storm coming through the pass" pic I posted upthread. Maybe. I dunno. It's in the right direction....

And this is what happens when you let the pilot control the vehicle. Granted, this was very early in the program... Someone should have told the pilot you can't touch-and-go a Space Shuttle. (just kidding, just a little PIO) -

StrandedonEarth replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Shuttle could and did fly remote-controlled. The only thing that couldn't be wasn't automated was lowering the landing gear. Part of the reason for this, as I recall, is the astronauts' "union" wanting to have control of the vehicle, not just being passengers. That attitude went back to the days of Mercury, when the very capable test pilots selected for the program resented being "spam-in-a-can"; they wanted control of the vehicle. After the Columbia accident, they made jumper cables so the computer could lower the gear. In fact, Shuttle was fly-by-wire, pilots never had direct control of the vehicle's maneuvering systems. The computer took the controller (joystick) input and controlled the thrusters and/or control surfaces to make the vehicle act accordingly. I don't think that will be an issue with the new generation of crew vehicles. -

Does he wash it down with a nice glass of mercury "on the rocks"?

How hard would it be to assign a button that, while pressed, instantly shows a a view that is 180 degrees from the current view, still aimed at the current aim point (as in the viewpoint would have to move to the other side of the craft)? Similar to the rear-view button in car racing games... Yeah, it may not get a lot of use, but it could be useful at times...

And to think, I had no idea who he was before now. It just goes to show that heroes must stand on the shoulders of giants who toil anonymously in the background.

There was ivy growing all along the retaining wall beside our townhouse. I terminated it with extreme prejudice. Pic was taken after I peeled it off the wall, and already had some loaded in the truck. When I took it to the waste transfer station, it weighed in at about 100kg according to the receipt (probably rounded up). Good thing I took it down too, because there was a nice crack in the wall (along with some smaller hairline cracks) that the strata might want to do something about. At least it's not my problem. "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." "Nah, I don't feel like it" "Here's a red stick [or the classic black ball] with a burning string hanging out of it..."

Do You Prefer Rockets or Planes More In KSP?
StrandedonEarth replied to Johnster_Space_Program's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I'm a RocketMan... Cuz planes are too tedious and take too long to get to orbit. I lost patience with that. But if I have to get to the other side of Kerbin, I'll build a Tomcat-alike of the fixed-wing variety and make a fast, hot trip. -

Rocket won't steer.
StrandedonEarth replied to vhazrd's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Further to the no comms issue, depending on your settings and how fast your ascent gets, plasma (the re-entry effects that you can also get on a fast ascent) can also block comms. And no comms means no control -
Reminds me of an old Muppet show, where one muppet was interviewing another about his furry puppets(?), and asked “Do you use shampoo on them?” The answer was:
