Kerbal Space Program Enhanced Edition - Release Date Announcement
StrandedonEarth replied to UomoCapra's topic in 2018
It's an all new version, and I'm sure the save corruption issue has been extensively tested to make sure it doesn't exist.- 176 replies

What Vanamonde said. I received all my badges from KSP Challenges in the Daily Kerbal subforum, but there is no challenge active there right now. One of them I even made myself!

This has been my wallpaper for pretty much since it was posted on a Fanwork Friday a few years ago...

Star Wars Episode VIII (8) the Last Jedi Discussion
StrandedonEarth replied to Kerbal01's topic in The Lounge
Trust your feelings. Let go (of your money). I'd say the spectacle was worth it. I'm there for the eye-candy, not a story that's been pulled in several directions by different writers. While I'm certainly a Star Wars fan, if you think about the story in Ep7-8 too much (like at all) it starts to smell like a wet wookie -
Yeah, I was on mobile earlier so I was being brief. Thanks for filling in the details

Carbon dioxide is heavier and will sink to the ground, smothering any ground fires. If you can get the fuel above that layer, I don’t see why it wouldn’t burn

totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The titanium fins have a long life ahead of them, so may as well go easy on them. There is also a theory earlier in the thread that the side boosters need the extra control authority on the way down due to the nose cones making them more aerodynamic/streamlined than usual. Besides which, the aluminum grids are discontinued old stock: Fry'em. See just how bad we can burn them. -

Which brings us back to... Single-seater spacecraft, huh? Sounds like a Colonial Viper to me -

Project Orion could carry 4 or 6 Dyna-Soars, as well as its own crew section. If it was ever built in that alternate reality, that is. -
Star Wars Episode VIII (8) the Last Jedi Discussion
StrandedonEarth replied to Kerbal01's topic in The Lounge
I think I'm more like that. I really try hard not to think about whatever TV show or movie I'm watching, because then it just falls apart. I want to just sit back and enjoy the show, suspending disbelief and, if necessary, thought. Of course, some shows totally wallop you over the head with plot holes that can be impossible to ignore. So as a spectacle, I'd say it was pretty good, despite Rose. But no, it doesn't bear too much thinking about, or it falls apart like the sand around a Sarlacc's mouth. -

Happy New Year from the West Coast

I myself didn’t, but I don’t know how my town did overall. I know one city down the highway and across the river has had no power for a day or two now, along with many other outages in the region. Two nights ago we had the rare weather phenomenon of “thundersnow” - lightning during a snow storm

Pods turn wildly on EVA

Are you sure you don't have something mounted just a tiny bit too close to the hatch? That;s the first and only thing I can think of that causes that. Have you tried different crafts/capsules? -

A Question About Reaction Control Systems
StrandedonEarth replied to Deus Zed Machina's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It would be a simple question of leverage and torque, T=FD where F is the force applied and D is the distance from the CoM. If you have a thruster pushing 100N at 1m from the CoM, then the thruster on the other side needs to provide the same 100Nm of torque to balance it. -

Star Wars Episode VIII (8) the Last Jedi Discussion
StrandedonEarth replied to Kerbal01's topic in The Lounge
I feel that for ramming, at light speed or not, mass is still king. Momentum, and kinetic energy, increase linearly with mass. Even with that huge v2 multiplier, a ship ten times bigger will do ten times as much damage. If small objects could do enough damage at lightspeed, they'd have hyper-driven torpedoes everywhere. The more I think about it, the less I care for this movie. It was funny and had good action, but there are also some "um, yeah, okay" moments. While Leia demonstrated effective use of the Force in free-fall (finally, somebody!), something in the execution of that scene irked me. Maybe it's because I can't decide if she looked more like the RoboMaid from SpaceBalls, or Alice from The Brady Bunch . -
I seem to have different tastes...
