I want to be poured by an appropriate puny. It sounds like a dearie toon.

Is this really going to become a thing because of a sleepy post on my phone? :D

Anyways, to pose a question, who is the oldest moderator? (If you guys are allowed to say)

What are the specific rules regarding necro-ing threads? I've seen a couple of threads in the past that are about a year or -more past their sell-by date and randomly posted in, and no moderator closes it even after being reported.

Sometimes "necro" posts aren't. If the topic is still relevant and the necro-ing post adds legitimate content, we tend to look on it benevolently.

Not a moderator, but have seen them answer a question like this before, they don't seem to mind necroed threads so long as the new info is actually useful.

What if the original creator of the thread posts in a thread that is of, say, a year past last post. Would that be considered a necro?

Pretty much this, as short posts that just ask questions or '+1' annoy other members, but posts that actually add to a thread and are well received are fine.

And of course the threads owner creator can revive their thread at any time (unless it's locked, then they can ask the moderators), well unless it's to say 'bump!' ;)

Edited as "owner" is not the correct term here, the threads creator doesn't own the thread, but as they made it they have the ability to edit the opening post, much as any member can edit their own posts.

Really? I didn't know this! Also, wouldn't it be better to say OP?

Re:

threads belong to the community and the rules are made by Squad and enforced by the moderation team.

Can you clarify?

To elaborate on what Red and sal have both already said, the big take-away here is the following two points:

  1. Being the person who creates a particular discussion thread does not, in itself, give you any special rights to what goes on in the thread you created. The initial post does help set the tone and topic of the following discussion, but it's still a post just like any other.
  2. That being said, many threads are created for a particular purpose, such as maintaining a central discussion thread for whatever content (tutorial, add-on, fanwork, forum challenge, etc.) that the thread's creator has made and wishes to share. We'll generally be willing to cooperate with the thread creator to help keep these threads on-topic, since it's good for the OP, for the discussion, and the community as a whole.

That's why we often lock threads or try to creatively shuffle thread "ownership" on request. It's not so much because they actually own the thread, but the matter of who has the first post in a topic can be helpful to other users trying to figure out who's "in charge" of whatever project is being worked on. As elaborated here, the special privileges we extend in these situations are "courtesies and not guaranteed rights."

This makes a lot of sense. Any privileges I have as the OP of "my" threads are granted by the other users voluntarily, not through moderation fiat.

DuoDex, is your name a subtle reference to The Arctic Incident? As in Koboi DoubleDex? Or am I reading too much into it. Thanks!

ETA:

I realized this isn't about the forums, sorry.

ETA2:

Why does the forum calendar say it lets my add events?

Actually, it's a byproduct of an eternity code I was working on ages ago. Just kidding, it's original. Although it does appear to reference that. go away, tetryds.

Uhm...dunno. Probably because you can. An admin is having a look right now.

Off Topic:Are we all Artemis Fowl fans?

Yes, we are.

On topic: do you have any advice for up and coming moderators on how to make their lives easier as moderators?

Don't post while mad.

Remember that the forum is the sum of the posters.

The more rules you enforce, the more work you have to do.
