Oh, it's real all right. Bill did do a "simulation" pass at 45km, which went pretty well until the bridge crew overheated and poofed, one by one. It was sickening.

Really not too hard! Like I said I just had Kenlie set prograde, and let the ship coast through. When it got back above 50km, I warped it ahead to just before atmospheric entry. It all went really smoothly until the last pass--you'll see images from that one in the next update :D

Oh, ouch!  I can imagine!  ;.;

I won't lie, I totally cheated in my last chapter and turned off the overheating so I didn't poof anyone.

And the Bob and Tedus show is back! :D 

So, some fun details about the aerobrake, not all of which I translated to the comic. After about 15 nice passes holding prograde through 48km, the apoapsis had dropped from 3100km to 1200km. I wanted 800km, and did not want to go through a bunch more passes to get there. Deciding that the velocity had dropped enough to risk it, I did a small burn at top of orbit to lower periapsis to 47,400m. 

Everything went fine on atmospheric entry--no explosions or roasted kerbals--but the altitude was low enough for the many wing elements that make up Intrepid's hull to start lifting. And if you thought that when I designed the ship I made sure about things like placing COM ahead of COL... well, you'd be very wrong. It's not supposed to fly! And it doesn't!

The ship flipped through the upper atmosphere pretty much as you see it in the first page of this update: two full revolutions and out. The apoapsis had dropped right to where I wanted it--no damage either, woo hoo!

So, we're flying in a nice formation now but in the next update the two craft will separate: Intrepid thrusting prograde to stabilize her orbit, Skimmeroo dropping periapsis to enter Laythe atmosphere and touch down somewhere in the Sagen Sea. It's going to be spectacular! Stay tuned!

I do enjoy the Bob and Tedus banter.

They'd better not need that kerbopoly board.
Somehow, I don't believe they are going to be thinking about anything quite so relaxing soon enough.

I was wondering how much more braking you'd get if Intrepid were broadside to the airflow.  I guess you know, now.
I have to tell you that you've got guts are a steely eyed missile kerb!  I don't think I would have tried aerobraking this ship.

Bob and Tedus are a lot of fun, but....

Indubitably - but aboard his or her own ship, an Admiral is still the Captin. I think. :)

Well, that is a cavalry hat I'm wearing, so perhaps if I did have a rank (I don't) it would be from the ground/air tradition...rather than clutter the thread with three pages of discussion on the subject and perhaps a new poll thread, let's just say that such a Kerbfleet rank (which I still don't have) would be properly spelled 'Genrill' -- noting that any similarity to certain homonymic human cavalry officers, living or dead, is purely coincidental. :wink:

According to naval tradition, being a captain of a boat is separate than holding the rank of captain.

For example, John F. Kennedy and others held the rank of Lieutenant during WWII but were called "Captain" because they were in command of a vessel (in Kennedy's case, PT-109). A person that has command of their own boat, be it a yacht or a barge tug, would also be referred to as "captain" based on their position of authority. The only time that a captain of a boat would be referred to anything other than "captain" is if their rank actually exceeds the actual rank of "captain." I'll explain this better below...

An admiral would remain in rank an admiral, and in their rank, could be considered a captain of a vessel, but under rare circumstances. Think of Fleet Admiral Bill "Bull" Halsey from WWII, he was in command of a task force centered on the U.S.S. Enterprise (CV-6). Even though at times he did issue orders that affected the Enterprise directly, he was NEVER it's captain because he commanded the task force, not the individual vessels within the task force. The Enterprise had her own captain - a subordinate to the admiral. Even if the captain were killed, the right of command would pass on down to the executive officer, and so forth.

Now there are provisions in the U.S Naval and British Royal Navy that allow for an admiral to assume command of a specific vessel. When this is done, the admiral is never referred to as "Captain" but will retain the title of the higher rank that he holds, "Admiral." This was where Star Trek TMP got it wrong. Admiral Kirk was downgraded in rank and placed back in command of the Enterprise and Captain Decker remained on as executive officer. In reality, what should have happened, Kirk would simply been given operational command, kept the rank of Admiral (and referred to as Admiral), and Decker remain a captain, but still executive officer...

I hope this didn't derail the thread or cause any more confusion...

I would think that the crew would be safe since they're inside of the cargo bay- or was it open at the time so you could take the screenshots?

Nope, it was closed! One nice thing about the cargo-bay-as-bridge-playset, you can always get the IVA view no matter what :) I just use the Camera Focus mod to center my view where I want it. For shots from front of the bridge I focus on the turbolift, for shots looking forward I focus on Dilsby's console or on the viewscreen :)

Innnnnteresting.... *squirrel paws* Once I finish the D2 Clydesdale, I'm thinking about that inline version you suggested. It makes me wonder if I could create a sound stage version (Description: The Jool landing was faked) along with a normal version. That, and an Emergency Mulitpurpose Holokerb. :wink:
