My daughter came by today, she is 19 now and she has school/job/social life so I don't see her as much as I used to.

It's funny, when kids are young you wish they would get out of your face.

And then they grow up so fast that they don't even have time for you. ^_^

Wow, @Triop, you're a lot older than I thought you were.

I do kind of understand your dilemma.  But I'm in the opposite place.  My parents are both gone and I have no close family.  And I didn't have any children and it's very unlikely I will.

This is an ache all its own.  Fortunately, I don't think of it that often....

There are many that are worse from around the same time.  I dislike them so I won't make us all more miserable than we already are.

But, hey, I tracked down issues on 3 mods today and reported them, even posted a fix for one, and dealt with an irritating config issue as well.

So slowly we make the world a better place.

It's not a dilemma, I was the same when I was 19.

I feel you, My mother died of cancer in 2007 and my dad died 2 years later also with cancer.

It's hard, you are forced to think about life and that it's mostly hard and not fun.

Games like KSP keeps me going when it comes to the fun bit, I can always be sorry later. ^_^

My parents had me in their mid to late 30's, so it was age that took them.  Still hurts and I still feel their absence from time to time.

Doot, doot, doot, lookin’ out my back door...

“Just a dusting,” the man said. “Maybe an inch or so,” the man said. “Barely even a moderate impact to travel,” the man said...

Meanwhile, my wife just stayed home. Her entire workplace shut down shortly thereafter. There’s numerous power outages, emergency protocols are being called up, and the roads are eerily deserted save for all the Priuses and Subarus in the ditch.

From where I'm sitting (central NJ), not really. Got some light snow dusting and some chillier temps (-15 C or so), but nothing so significant as far as snow goes.

If you go up north more, I believe they also got hammered.

Over the course of the last couple weeks, yeah. The snowstorm that kicked it off wasn't too bad (it only dropped about a foot or so, which is nothing unusual around here. City had it cleared within a few hours), but some of the sidewalks didn't get cleared as well as they should have, and we had a thaw right after the snow fell... which means sidewalks covered in sheet ice. No good. Then, a couple more inches of snow, then that big cold snap that seems to have hit everywhere from Boston to the Twin Cities. Not as bad as it was out in Chicago or Minneapolis, but the place I live is perpetually windy, which as you can imagine exacerbated the issue. Right now it's unseasonably warm, though (the high today was in the 50's. I was overheating in a light fleece).

I have to laugh when I see statements like this. :D A couple of inches absolutely paralyzes this place. What little I saw today was a ghost town. How much of a ghost town? I drive a bus, but today I just sat at the bus yard cuz they just cancelled half the runs. I heard guys were running so late everyone just said "flarp it, drive for a while, then come back." One guy who did go out sat in a van for three hours waiting for his relief bus to show up. Which never actually did. And then, this was my commute home:

Nope, road was never plowed. Not even touched. It looked like this until I got to my ferry, then over here on my little rural backwater island with a shoestring transportation budget, everything was clear and dry.

I've lived both situations.  I grew up in southern Wisconsin, where dropping a foot of snow in 12 hours was common and all it meant was you left for work a little earlier.  The town I lived in had less than 4,000 people, but just the town had over a dozen salt/plow trucks... nevermind that half the farmers owned their own plows.

Now I live in SW Missouri, where people absolutely lose their minds if we have over an inch forecast, and I'm pretty sure the entire county has a dozen trucks.

My wife's work was closed on Friday due less than 2cm of snow. A few miles west the motorway was closed with people abandoning cars all over the place as they couldn't get anywhere.

To be fair though it was the heaviest snow in 10 years so the councils just aren't set up for it.

... and six hours later I'm back with a somewhat better functioning computer!
Hard drive replace, Windows newly installed, fortunately most of my programs were on the E: drive, not C. I have to reinstall less, maybe Visual Studio, but that's about it.

However, it turns out that the old product key for Windows 7 doesn't work anymore, probably because it is being used by a different machine right now. Oh well, I can do a few days without computer too. It's not like Windows completely uninstalls itself after 3 days of unlicensed use.
