An water heater who blow up is much weirder. Any smart water heater would not let you block in the water as that could give an steam explosion. The battery presumably is only to ignite the fuel in a gas heated water heater. Not to heat the water directly with battery power. All water heaters I've seen have a pressure release valve. Ignites the gas with a piezo igniter, powered via the oscillating circuit. It's Nano Pro, and doesn/t need cables, nanotechnologies rule! So, when the battery is fresh, the heater says "Click-click-click! Pshhhh...." When it's partially discharged, the capacitor gets charged slowly, while the gas keeps running into the ignitor. "Click. Click. Click. Click. Pshhhh...." When the battery is depleted, the gas cloud in the ignitor reaches the explosive concentration, and when the ignitor finally ignites it, the air-gas cloud detonates, then the gas gets ignited, and the heater works as needed. "Click... Click... Click... Click... Click... Click... BOOM! Pshhhh...." As the battery works for months, it's sometimes lazy to go and buy a next one, and there is no sense to buy them in advance to let them get dry. So, I'm guessing that the Starshippers didn't replace the battery in their engine ignition system. Any smart water heater would not let you block in the water as that could give an steam explosion. battery ignition does kind of make sense though. only time i used a gas heater it had a pilot light. but these cause problems if the flame ever goes out, you can flood a room with gas and cause an explosion. i think they may have been discontinued due to safety codes. but a high voltage boost regulator that can do the same job and is like a 4 component affair, not really all that expensive. it can draw so little power as to not really need mains. there are plenty of situations where you need hot water but might not have continuous access to mains power (like in an rv or boat). you might also need power for the thermostat, but you can do that with a bimetallic strip and clockwork. i think all the off grid models use battery igniters now. here in se alaska we still use a lot of fuel oil heaters, which is what we were on before management installed heat pumps. They are supposed to have a fuel cutoff if the heat from the pilot isn't detected via bimetallic strip or thermocouple, but those parts can fail also. I think heads rolled for that one (shakeup for sure), but fortunately it wasn't as catastrophic as it could have been.
