Yesterday, I was cooking something for the superb owl. Didn't realize I accidentally left a burner on my stove on unnecessarily until I had finished cooking entirely. But it was low enough that it didn't look warm at all. Good thing I generally tend to avoid touching burners at all, or I'd be left with weird burn marks and a funny not funny story.

i did that once, after some idiot forgot to turn the burner off. spiral burn marks look kind of cool, but it hurts a lot.

actually i think that's when i finally banned mom from the kitchen.

We joke about this all the time (before PhD and Med school my wife was a chemist)—"Hot glass looks like cold glass" from back when we both did chem labs with glass blowing. Then I pull a pork tenderloin from oven, put it on stovetop... and forget the scrub towel I just used as a potholder and grab handle to rotate it. Fully grab.

At one point when I first got on board the boat I was nominated to go down between the turbine generators and clean during a field day. Very hot (we were underway, so the engine room had steam in it), very nasty with leaked lube oil. The access was a very narrow panel in the deck, maybe 10 inches by 18 inches. You really had to squeeze through, and it had steam piping on either side of it. So I finished cleaning down there and was squeezing out of the hole, when one of the belt loops on my overalls caught on something, a pipe hanger or some other protrusion below the deck. My arms are above the deck, the hangup is below the deck. So I'm sitting there wiggling and squirming in this little hole, trying to get free. And suddenly I realize that the front of my overalls, just below the beltline, is pressed up against a steam trap, which is an uninsulated steam line. And it's starting to get warm. VERY warm. In a very sensitive area of the anatomy. I bolted up out of that access like a rocket. Tore the loop right out of my overalls, put about a six-inch rip in them. Everyone up top was laughing their asses off. Didn't care. :D

Mildly hot metal (450°F) looks like cold metal.

Ouch.

Glass, too.

Also, that thing under your oven isn't a good place to store baking dishes.

31 more spam calls. Today thats 31 spam calls reported as junk. The number of spam numbers seems to be actually slowing as some of those 31 are numbers that called multiple times. Need the volume to drop now too. I have been pushed past 500 calls and sit sadly at 508 total. Thats 508 total since 1-26-25…

508… :( 164802142025

Despite decades of searching, no sign of alien life has even been confirmed, intelligent or otherwise

From a video I did watch today....

Well, that's not a surprise, as we are still struggling to find (intelligent) life in our own planet... There're some hope about dolphins, however - assuming they would stick around for the fish time enough. :P

I don't know why it took me this long to notice, but it is quite sad to see people dreading the state of humanity in regards to the situation in the USA, when the USA represents 4% of humanity.

That says a lot more about the statistically small number of people who do grieve about it using communications technology more than it does about what is actually going on in humanity.

One reason may be it’s ability to destroy a large country

The U.S.’ position and power could potentially cause another world war, and at worst endanger humanity.

(Saying this as I live in the USA)

Arguably, at least for me,  we don’t hear much about the rest of the world- probably because “local” news is easier than “global” news.

If you said this before 2016 i would agree with “could potentially” but now? Not a matter of could. Unless certain individuals are stopped there is no could only WHEN. Add in a deliberate and very intentional dumbing down of people, and i am not being hyperbolic either. 221802172025

america is fine regardless of what the rhetoric says. what nixon once called a silent majority has simply been replaced with a loud minority.

no. its not. America is in objective verifiable danger and that danger puts the WORLD at risk. No ifs. No ands. No buts. America and by extension the world at large is in objective danger. Period. Full stop. 045402182025 fixed an omission 045802182025

4%, but in a place where you can get guns in a sports store. Definitely can't do that where I live, nor in most of the world.

Would love to say other things but I believe that is frowned upon in this forum.

Love you forum.

everyone has their own propaganda and that propaganda is usually hyperbole that says if we dont do x america is doomed. this comes from all sides that have a side. its always the same except x changes. i cant help but notice how ham dramatic the weather report is. or how people on opposing sides can claim victory over the same political interaction (im pointing at youtube pundits here). we know the psychology of being bombarded with constant doom and gloom messaging, and go figure you see it everywhere. if america does fall its a self fulfilling prophecy and it would deserve to do so for failing to notice in time.

what happens to the world is that some other country claims alpha predator status, and they take our place. as we fall into a position of less relevance. the people in all continue their lives until the next churn. the best thing we can do to stop that from happening is to use our eyes and ears more than our screens and speakers and take notice when we start acting like the despots and tyrants were supposed to despise rather than envy.
