This game already costs $40 on Steam, now they're locking features behind paywalls? Yeah no. [snip]

Sorry you feel that way, man. Have you seen what some of this robotics stuff can do? It's pretty baller.

Correct, that's how DLC expansions work.

Not necessarily. The first DLC they added was entirely free of charge, and I believe they said something at the time about how they'd only release free DLCs, though don't cite me on that. All this paid DLC stuff only started happening when T2 took over.

Wrong. They always had the intention to start doing paid DLC.

Either way you won't get the content. If they didn't charge for something they'd have closed shop or moved on to another game by now.

At least this way I can play it.

Sorry, my receipt from Steam on the day the fist DLC was released says otherwise:

You've got your details confused.

I was talking about the Asteroid Redirect Mission one. It wasn't really DLC in the normal sense but they branded it as DLC.

Squad released two things they called DLC before making history: a soccer ball and Asteroid Day.

However they have said they may charge for content in the future for over 6 years. If they hadn't, they wouldn't have needed the early adopter free clause.

As I recall, it was actually branded as an "Official Mod".

And both the World Cup and ARM were released before the game was released.

You mean the one they literally called a "patch"?   They most certainly did not brand it DLC.

Go ahead and search the announcement, nowhere is DLC mentioned.

The soccerball one for the World Cup was an official mod.  Semantics aside, yes you have to buy the DLC expansions now.  C'est la vie.

"Today, the Asteroid Day mod was released by KSP developers at SQUAD as an official DLC."

But was that quote from an actual Squad spokesperson, or was it a regular forum user?

I loved that book. Read it 20 years ago and need to read it again.

I read it 20-15 years ago, and I reread it earlier this year.  I miss Sir Terry, the knight with a sword forged from a meteorite.

Edit:
And now I am sad, because I just realized I completely missed Towel Day/The Glorious 25th of May.

Oh oops. I don't actually know. Add there was no link I kind of assumed it was the announcement itself.

But I really clearly recall a discussion about whether or not it was really DLC even though it was free. It would be odd to have had that rampant a discussion if they never said it.

I mean, Squad never said it was a fish and we didn't argue for weeks about how maybe it actually is a fish.

So, what you're saying is Squad will be providing a seafood buffet for the DLC release?

There's been a decent amount of turnover, and I can't quite keep track of who has/hasn't held a official position.

Either way, it was before even the 1.0 launch of the game, some 5 years ago. @Clockwork13 you've had 5 full years since that content, whatever you prefer to call it.  I think its reasonable to charge for new content packs.  They're still updating the base game quarterly, including all those part facelifts.  You're certainly free to feel its not worth your 15 smackaroos.

So, how about some Jumbo size cryovolcanos, eh?   I'm hoping some kind of scalefactor=3 can be fiddled in somewhere.
