kerbiloid Posted July 1, 2020 Share Posted July 1, 2020 (edited) Not that upcoming, but No Turning Back (2019) Mars One has gone long ago, but probably the authors are not aware, as it's about a guy who got an offer to take part in Mars One program. Pros: no fake special effects, no bad sci-fi cliches, no mystic aliens, no wrong trajectories or spaceships making you facepalm. Cons: no space at all, I can't see why anyone at all could watch this masterpiece. I guess, somebody forgot iPhone in an amateur theater, and what has been occasionally filmed, became this movie. Lots of people still think Mars One is The Plan, the one and only way "NASA" (aka the entire space industry) has decided to reach Mars. I often get asked how I feel about the one-way trip when I say I want to go, and I have to explain why interplanetary transport needs to be versatile and mobile. A nice trimmed down escort story from the Battle of the Atlantic. Modern naval warfare is difficult to make into an action movie, but this did a good job with both action and tension. Nothing really over the top (ie: this isn't that horrid Midway movie), but there are some CGI bits that I didn't care for. I'm a tiny bit disappointed they dropped much of the captain's character struggles from the book. "The Good Shepherd" touches heavily on the themes of self doubt and spiritual devotion in the face of violence. Hard to convey things like that in film though, unless you do some "captain's log" type of narration, so I'm ok with it. Pity this didn't get a real theatrical release. Good war movie. I never read the book, but I agree with all your observations. generally speaking it was well done. A long term interest of mine has been ww2 history, and while my primary area of interest is in the Pacific, I've read a fair amount about the ETO and the Battle of the Atlantic. I did hear an interview with Hanks on Hardcore History (addendum) with Dan Carlin, and it was pretty interesting in terms of what they could show without too much exposition. Hanks specifcally talked about wanting to use jargon, and just have the viewer figure it out as much as possible. Speaking generally, if before it was animated, now it can be live action (with the help of CGI of course). Kind of expecting live action versions of Pixar movies eventually... Okhin Posted August 21, 2020 Share Posted August 21, 2020 Not even that. It's just that audience goes down while the series run. Even great ones, audience erodes over time. So, the longer a show runs, the less it earns advertisement revenues, the more it risk being shutdown. It's getting even worse with network saturated content such as Netflix and Amazon (and others), because they promote and make a living on novelty. A new series will generates more ads revenue than a running and established one (because of curiosity it's easier to promote, etc). Coupled with the natural erosion of shows, and the fact they do not need to fill timetables (since there's more shows available than one can watch in one's life), the online network have absolutely no interest to run a show after the second season. That's why so many of shows on netflix are tailored for one or two seasons, maybe three. There's no point in doing more. And it's not even related to the perceived values of the show.
