Work-in-Progress [WIP] Design Thread

Yes, thanks. I like to make useless sculptures / modelling haha.. too bad Kerbal's inertia don't allow them to walk inside ships like this while flying (even with exactly 1G)

I will however remake it completely from scratch tomorrow based on this sketch

CCBWprw.jpg

for better outside proportions, and sturdiest design overall, so I finished the first one (386 parts)

a bit in a hurry just in case someone wants to try it out. (it's working but might be glitchy!)

1 Vtol engines 2-3 forward engines

4-5 cargo bay gears

Asymmetric boosters: the best thing since sliced Mk3 parts :P

http://i.imgur.com/PlwLzLB.png

Reminds me of my first asymmetrical rocket from 0.17:

^Note the unusual appearance of the second stage; it had a cluster of LV-909s that I somehow clipped inside. Of course, this was before cubic struts were added, so engine clusters were very difficult to make.

I'll just leave this here...

Here is a design that I saw when perusing over the early space shuttle concepts.

I liked it, so why not try to make it a reality?

WcwImSD.png

It has been quite a struggle, but nothing about the design is inherently more difficult than the real shuttle design, in fact in KSP, things are much easier with this design as there is no asymmetry. It has just been a lot of test flights and engine arrangement tweaking. As it stands it is one KS-25x4, two Mainsails, and two Skippers. Shown here with maximum weight loadout. Lighter Payloads can be accommodated for by reducing Main-tank configurations.

All that effort to lift an orange can to orbit. Maybe next time I'll stick with big rockets.

KEyRIHm.png

Still, it's nice to bring all those expensive engines (and kerbals) back to a soft landing on a runway. The orbiter is having stability problems right now. The game seems like it doesn't know what to do with those heavy rocket engines actually flying back, as my Center of Lift and Center of Mass icons in the SPH do not match test results.

I'll figure it out. I just wanted to share now; getting that -64 to orbit was quite difficult with the constraints of this design!

Exothermos, that is a beautiful craft :)

All those engines for one orange... There must be a ton of dead weight in the orbiter, how much do the leading-edges add? I haven't flown many finished ships with the Mk.3 parts yet, so I'm not sure if it's the wings or their tankage ratio.

Finally done with the design work, so I thought I'd drop a bit of a teaser...

Very nice wings!

For my new mk3 cargo SSTO work is continuing, I redesigned wings, intakes, cargo bays (added small one for balance purposes) :D, now it brings to LKO 90t payload or 72t to Mun orbit with nuclear version with more comfort control and I am staying under 250 parts. And now I am really need name for this craft.

Nice one matey, The shape reminds me of Rune's SSTO's, thats a big complement. :)

Thank you Majorjim!! Glad you like it. Here's some pics of the final craft, I'm honestly quite happy with the way it looks and fly

The ship's center of mass is on the center of mass of the fuel so i doesn't move while flying

You can use the fuel RCS to greatly improve maneuverability in both VTOL and Plane mode (smooth transitions)

Unfortunately I can't fit much in the cargo bay right now, maybe 2 motorcycles with parachutes lol..

The cargo bay is great! And a small bay is good for creativity, you can design something small and cute! I love the Ion (handwarmer?) table!

Well his is going to be pretty difficult to equal, once I get to it, knowing his design history: Mesklin, besides having a really cool nickname that shows copious amounts of geekiness and love for science (kudos for that!), is one of the SSTO builders I am always picking up things from, up to the point of rebuilding imitations of some of his ships. Oh, and I'm already on it. :)

Good one! You got it looking really good and close to the original. Kudos!

Rune. I think we lurk the same astronautix pages.

I want to have a stock SSTO that can deliver a Full red tank. I started fiddling with a VTOL version. THe idea was to have the Rear "Engine" section decouple and the forward "Cockpit" section would maneuver the red tank where it was needed. Then the Forward section would decouple from the red tank (or take an empty), reattach to the engine section. and bring it back to the surface, reducing the waste.

SO far I have been able to only get an Empty red tank into LKO with added Solid fuel boosters. and the first attempt to land the craft without the red tank ended up with a catastrophic spin.

Started making a medium payload SSTO that can make bring a payload to a delivery planet (Mun/Duna/Minimus/Laythe). It got 9 tons to the mun, with 700 oxidizer left (after returning to Kerbin), in Laythe mode (which makes you get rid of ~1/3 of your oxidizer, instead of the usual ~1/5). Its really cool. It uses the:

Intake

Intake

Engine

Intake

Intake

Engine

Setup, instead of nonconsecutive placed intakes and engines (only with 6 intakes per 13 tons/ single engine). It got me up to 100k meters apoapsis, which is more than necessary. I'm going to furtherly test it and see if I can get at least 15 tons to Duna, maybe more to Laythe. The neat part is that it uses the shock cone spamming, which from experience, is the better intake over the RAM intake. This SSTO currently only has ~270 parts which I never imagined to be possible.

Its really good at landing on all types of planets. Just need to test Duna and then maybe add a glide engine.

Easy to control/take off/land and almost ready for release...

Yeah, I know... that's why it is still a work in progress (and probably why the design was shelved IRL when someone ran the numbers). The structural fuselages are comparatively light at 0.1 each, so they all weigh a total of 2. I tried structural beams to define the leading edge but that led to wing part intrusion into the payload bay. It's a tough nut to crack.

I think part of the problem is that this shuttle design does not shed weight in the same way as a good rocket design. It must lift those heavy orange tanks, so it needs lots of thrust early, but is carrying way too many engines at higher altitudes. v0v

Huge SSTO

WOW! Now THAT's a payload fraction. also, 250 parts? I'll go home now.
