  1. So I need ideas for a spacecraft name. Short summary, it's an alternate reality Soviet Minmus landing. Be it Russian, English, or gibberish, I need something that sounds cool. If you need more context, it's landing 3 kerbals on Minmus, Apollo style, from a sort of N1 rocket. Here's the post I'll be putting this on: And here's the flag I designed, if it helps.
  2. I am about to start another grand tour, I only miss the last step: giving names to everything. Hence I'm asking for ideas on a few of those vessels this is the mothership - with already a few things already attached. it weights 2800 tons. in my normal kerbalism missions it would hold all the life support, but kerbalism is incompatible with this planetary pack; to simulate the added mass of life support, I added a bunch of additional living space. the engine pack. the nose cones can be closed to protect the ship for harder aerobraking similarily, the solar array also can be retracted and stored inside cargo bays. Here's a better look at the vessels already attached to it. from the left: yet-unnamed unmanned probe with a scanner, Arrowhead Stock spaceplane, yet-unnamed modular taxi, Ice Cream refueling vehicle, Cigar small lander, another unmanned probe. this weird-looking plane is both a mobile base, an exploration vehicle and an ascent vehicle for large eve-like planets. the back part is habitation modules, hence the mobile base. when it's time to leave, the habitation module is ditched, the ascent vehicle flies up on propellers, then it jettisons the wings and it's a small, but powerful rocket - necessary for planets bigger than Eve. here while it's docking to the mothership, with its thermal shields attached to survive reentry. the taxi. in my mission architecture, "taxi" is the vehicle that ferries a lander from the mothership to low orbit. without the taxi, one would have to either use the mothership to move around the landers - horribly expensive, given how big a mothership is - or include the extra fuel in the lander, which would make the lander a lot less efficient. here the taxi has an additional fuel tank, for when it has a greater payload (basic configuration is for carrying around the lightweight lander Cigar, extra tank for Arrowhead). finally, the small probe. it's got a scanner to find ore, and a rovemate core to detect anomalies. some science instruments too. it's purely fluff, since i can't read a resource scan anyway, and nothing it does is necessary. but i like having it. So, I don't know how to call the mothership, plane-habitation thing, taxi, and small probe. I am open to suggestions. thanks
  3. so its just a ship with lots of fuel tanks and looks like the [Rescuing 35 Kerbals from DUNA] by Matt Lowne but just mk2.5 and with a vector engine and 4 swivels on the not decoupling Soyuz boosters. I want a cool name like Vulcan for it
  4. Lately I'm finding myself doing a lot of transfers according to a certain pattern. First, I make an ejection burn from the parent body like on a Hohmann transfer, as shown in the image However, this is NOT a Hohmann transfer, because I do not meet the target body at periapsis (or at apoapsis if I'm moving away from the central body, let's keep with the example from the pictures for simplicity) I do not meet the target body immediately, because the transfer was not syncronized. Instead, when I am at periapsis, I make a retrograde burn (or prograde, but it would make for a more expensive intercept). This changes my orbital time enough that I will meet the target body at periapsis at a later orbit. It can be the next orbit, or a few orbits in the future; generally you can pay less if you're willing to wait more. The picture shows it. Yellow manuever, at periapsis, is the change to get the right orbital time. In this case it's a big burn because the target is a small moon with negligible oberth effect, so I lose nothing by burning in open space - and I avoid cosine losses. but it's normally a small adjustment manuever. purple is not a manuever (0 m/s), but it's there to get the game to see the intercept several orbits into the future. And finally red is the capture burn. I've done this extensively to reach all the moons of saturn. I've done it in going from ceres to vesta I've done a slight modification in going to mercury. I've done it when leaving Venus. This manuever is as expensive as a regular Hohmann transfer - give or take a small excess for the burn you make in interplanetary space, which is not as effective as burning near a planet. It takes longer, possibly multiple orbits. It has the advantage, though, that you can pick your planar nodes. When you have to make a transfer with high inclination, you can avoid a plane change if you make a hohmann transfer on the planar node; in that case you get to pay the plane change with the eject or capture burn, saving a lot of fuel by both oberth effect and combining two burn. But this hohmann transfer requires the right placement from you and the target body; you can't always count on the planets aligning for a hohmann transfer right when you're passing through the planar node. So you make this manuever instead, starting the hohmann manuever on the node, and then you syncronize to meet your target later. You can also make this manuever when you are in an elliptic orbit, and you must burn at periapsis to leave cheaply, and you can't pick your direction. In this case, again, you leave when your ellipse is best aligned to save fuel, and you syncronize to meet your target later. Doing grand tours, I often find myself in an elliptic orbit, it's a lot cheaper to park the mothership like that than it is to circularize and then raise apoapsis again. So I've done this manuever a lot, possibly more than any other. Yet I don't know a name for it, I don't even know if it has a name. I checked if I could find names of orbital transfers, but I only find the bi-elliptic transfer, which is something entirely different. So, do anyone know if this manuever has an official name?
  5. On my old, now corrupted save, I had a SPAGHETTI KERMAN! On his first and only spaceflight, he was sent to the "Eye to the sky" space station and stayed there forever. Well, bye bye Spaghetti. But on my current save. Can you guess it? No you cant. Its @James Kerman! Yes, I have a random kerbal with that name!
  6. I got 2 methods. 1. Just put a letter before 1 for the first one, then put 2 instead of 1 after the letter for the second one... boring route. 2. Name it either after an Egyptian god, Greek god or just think of a random word off the top of your head and hope it doesn't mean "lol it failed". That's how I got the AR-1 Commodore and the BR-1 Frog. It just needs to sound cool. What do you guys do?
  7. I, being a huge Redwall fan, usually use two classes: the Salamondastron liquid-fuel, strap-on-booster, deep-space rockets and the Redwall series of liquid-fuel, no-booster probe launchers. For all I care, the Mun doesn't exist. I landed on Minmus twice, but I touched down near the north pole and crashed my top-heavy lander both times.
  8. i am trying and falling to find a spisific lp of ksp i know for a fact that it was using some version of signal delay, a way to give the craft commands that it would do after some time passed (maybe kos), and it also had some version of Maneuver Node Evolved mod or something similar. i think the goal was to colonize something if any of this rang any bells please help
  9. This is a deeply philosophical issue that we need to discuss, the fabrik of space-time itself is slowly unraveling... Everyone knows "Bill the Science Guy" and "Bob the Builder" from our beloved kelevision programs... So why on Kerbin, I ask you, is Bob a scientist and Bill an engineer? To maintain stability in the universe, I propose a name change to bring piece and mind to all kerbalkind.
  10. I made a ship here. It has about 8000 m/s of delta V once in orbit and is stinking big (by my standards). However, my very uncreative mind could not think of a name. Any ideas?
  11. I have had this problem for a while now. How do you name a ship thats not called "first ship" or BOOM other than online genorators? Thanks.
  12. So I went into my Sandbox save to test out the new stuff, and found this guy in my applicants: And yes, he does have the elusive Badass trait (like Jeb) I think 0.23 might have added Billy-Somethings to the Kerbal name generator, because another one turned up in my Career save.
  13. Is there a list of all the kerbal names that can be generated in the game?
  14. So, recently, in my new sandbox save, I'm reaching a point where there are multiple "entities", and I'm playing all of them. So then, I got into the idea of different names for each "country", and I came up with these: Kerman States - Kerman (Analogous to US) CCKP (Communist Confederation of Von Kerman Peoples) - Von Kerman (Analogous to Soviet Union, Russian, Ukraine, etc.) McKerman Kingdom - McKerman (Analogous to UK) KerbeX - Kerman (Analogous to SpaceX and Blue Origin and all that good stuff, basically the private companies) Currently, though, I've gotten to the point that the McKermans are building their own Space Station (As they've been excluded from the KISS mostly because of a lack of an extra Clamp-O-Tron Jr.) However, the 'French' Kerbals are also looking to start spaceflight and collab with the McKermans... but I can't think of a name. Help. Ones thought of by others: Kermany - Kermann @kerbiloid Karthage - Kerbaal @kerbiloid CCKP - Kermanski @eatU4myT
  15. I'm deep into the planning of a first Kerballed mission to land on another planet — which will be Duna. The contract calls for the addition of a docking manoeuvre in orbit of the red planet, which adds another layer of complexity. Having reviewed the ageing Chequers Aerospace fleet, it's increasingly apparent that the faithful workhorse rockets in the current 'Exodus' family, that launched a raft of interplanetary probes and flybys, simply isn't up to the mission. Chequers Associated Systems (CAS), along with the substantial cash injection from the World-Firsts-Record-Keeping-Society, have enabled the commission of a new family of rockets, that not only enable us to make use of the latest advancements in technology, but will be able to satisfy the needs of Chequers Aerospace now, and into the future. These new rockets will expand our capability, to put Kerbal boots on Duna and Ike, conduct scientific missions to far-flung moons, and enable us to develop the infrastructure for even more ambitious missions. But this new family of rocket needs a name. Nigel from the marketing department came up with the clever (and responsibility-shirking) idea to put it out to the KSP community. Can you help?
  16. does the galaxy have a name? Kerby Way? something like that? is there any Official Dev statement about the name of the galaxy? =) thnaks
  17. Quick! I need to make a Mun Station but I don't have any good name ideas. Here are my current ones which I am unsure of: -Untitled Space Station -Space Station -Mun Space Station -Minmus Space Station

  19. In my science save, I have decided that to challenge myself, I will have a base on every planet and moon in KSP, as well as have a space station orbiting it. I have also decided to name each base/station after a band or singer I like, so I called the operation "Golden Record". But I don't know what band should pair with what planet/moon. So I need help. I plan put whoever helped me name the base in the flag that's planted when it lands. Thanks in advance! The list: Freddy Mercury: Moho, because it is the analogue of Mercury Queen: MDZhB "Laythe because it is the queen of the Jool system." David Bowie: Mun, because, well I don't know. Pink Floyd: Minmus, because it is a magical world of mint and super man gravity, and there songs bring you to a magical world. Metallica: Ike, because they were a metal/rock band, and whenever I think of metal I think of dark colors . Led Zeppelin: cantab "Eeloo, because it is far away like heaven. you have to take a stairway to get there." Black Sabbath: Dres, because they are also a metal band, and Dres is darker than Ike. Rolling Stones: Gilly, because your rocket turns into a "Rolling Stone" on it's slopes" (cantab) Billy Joel: FleshJeb "Low Kerbol Orbit, because the star 'starts the fire'". Johnny Cash: Tylo, because your engine makes a burning ring of fire when landing. Nirvana: Bop, because the certain easter egg of a certain deep sea creature looks like his hair, in a way. AC/DC: Eve, because it has oceans of rocket fuel, and rockets are loud, like thunder. Guns N' Roses: Duna, because roses are red like Duna. Beatles: FleshJeb "Vall, because it is the diamond in the sky with Lucy." Elvis: MDZhB "Jool because it is the king of the planets." The Eagles: Pol, because it has mystical invisible mountains, like the mystical Hotel California. Thanks MDZhB, FleshJeb, cantab
  20. So, we have the Jool 5, which is about the 5 moons of Jool. But, I want to know, what would the community call the other 4 moons in the game, that aren't part of the Jool 5. Why I'd like to know will become clear at a later point (which I'll link). Discuss.
  21. So... Here I am with my extra-large coffee plus double-espresso shot; 5 in the morning and sleep-deprived synapses sizzling like Rice Krispies. I click my KSP icon for a little relaxation before bed and WHUUUUT?! OK - DOODS! Dev dudes - that's funny as all get-out but MAN that freaked me out!
  22. This is my first expedition to Eve, though it is unmanned. I have sent things to Duna, but on multiple flights. This is my first time sending up multiple probes/missions on one flight to another body. Its based off my own Delta IV Heavy design and launch profile. I just don't think the name Eve Package will cut it for my ship. Any creative people out there: What should I call this mission, and therefore the relays and lander attached to it? https://imgur.com/DoXF0Pa
  23. I noticed one of the comm-stations on the ground is called Nye Island. Just wondering whether that's a shout-out to Bill Nye, and if so, has he heard about it?
  24. I have been wondering lately, is "Kerman" really a family name, after all ? It would make much more sense as an honorific suffix, like "-san" in japanese or "-ssi" in korean. Under this hypothesis, Kerbals have only one, very colorful name, but the etiquette of the Kerbal society requires that they address each other by the name + "Kerman". Only Kerbals who have got to know each other closely, like Bill and Valentina stranded together for ten years in a Mun lander short of fuel, would dare to call each other by name only (a practice known as "kermansute"). Just thinking.
  25. So I've built this ship And I finally got it to work. It has over 1700+ parts and is the largest thing I have ever launched. I was sitting around thinking of names that would go along with such an ambitious mission, but I can't come up with any names I feel are good. That's when I remembered the community on the forum has helped be in the past and might have some suggestions for what I might name it. TLDR: Help me name this grand tour mission^
