Well, a quick search leads to some lethal numbers. IO - 3600rem/d Europa - 750rem/d Ganymede - 8rem/d Callisto - 0.01rem/d Note that the radiation even at Callisto is very dangerous. I could see a subsurface base on Callisto with restrictions to going up top. Space suits would also shield against a lot of the radiation.
-
I thought the radiation from Jupiter was too high still at Ganymede for people to live there.

That is not true for all people. Some are ignorant. Some are wilfully ignorant. Some know and say it doesn't matter. Some know and act with reluctance. But no moral boundaries are ever pushed or ignored without eventual consequence. That consequence may be minor. TTI/PD has already lost sales of KSP 2 because of how they handled this mess. Consequences are not always minor. People have memories and will remind those who've forgotten. I may buy KSP 2. Or I may not. I will always think of this. And I will be very reluctant to buy other TTI games.

I think you're still assuming things we're not sure of. We don't know what Star Theory was going to be able to deliver for the original deadline and whether that would satisfy the contract or the community. Because we only have the minimal haziest idea of what was in the contract. In addition, we don't know if either or both parties were already talking about changing not just the schedule but also the specification, as well as eventually talking about Private Division buying Star Theory. Others with more knowledge of the current gaming industry (like @K^2) said by November KSP 2 should have been well into final polish for release. I don't know if all information releases prior to that were in line with this. But I get the feeling that it wasn't. And then we have to admit we don't have a lot of knowledge about all states of KSP 2 from its inception to now. We are really in the dark here. And again those industry insiders say such blatant mass team poaching is not yet common in the industry and will still have a negative impact on Private Division. And we have to consider that those at PD knew this, yet still cancelled the contract (using a clause that must have been in the contract) and issued the mass poach broadcast. And then thought it better to say *nothing* about it all until some lightweight news release about the new studio in February. We are running out of steam to comment about this. I've really said nothing new above, just saying again what I and others have said in the past 12 days. Nate was sent out with an olive branch that just consisted of him saying he will still deliver the same KSP 2 as was promised. But nothing about the past. Nor a reassurance from PD that KSP 2 will be as promised. Maybe they're saving the "we regret" message for an unpleasant future turn, but that's complete speculation. We're not likely to learn more. We will have to wait for KSP 2 to come out. Others have commented on power. A bit right and a bit wrong in most comments. I don't like what was done. Private Division makes itself look guilty by not putting out a proper message before it leaked. I may still buy KSP 2. As others have mentioned, it's hard to avoid these unpleasant compromises and live in this society. But to me, TTI/PD can still fall. I will never deal with NCsoft because they killed off City of Heroes. EA is almost in that class. TTI isn't that far back either.

totm january 2020 Community Caveman Jool 5 mission
Jacke replied to ManEatingApe's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I believe it does matter and EVA propellant should be strictly conserved. Because with Caveman facilities (all 1st level only), a Kerbal can only EVA on Kerbin on the ground. A Kerbal can at any time return to a pod with an empty seat, but then won't be able to EVA after. So it's only one lot of EVA propellant. -
That's a very good point, as I can think of some shows with an abysmal pilot. I was going to revisit "Space Force", but it was well down on my list. Now it's even farther down.

Wow, someone tried to turn a Reliant Robin into a autogyro. Needed more weight forward and empennage rear to increase stability.

I watch like just over 2 minutes and lost interest. Good to see my gut feel was right.

You have to give more information than that if you want to receive assistance. What doesn't appear where? As well, follow the link in my signature and read the troubleshooting steps you should following, including finding the log file and uploading it to a file sharing site so you can post the link here. Else there's very little that can be done to help you.

Rocketry rule of thumb: launch vehicles cost in proportion rougly to their volume. Of course, that's only about one of five costs (payload, bus, launch vehicle, integration, ground support) for a payload. So some increase in cost, but not likely a lot.

You've given very little information to help, but assuming your setup of CKAN is default and on KSP 1.9.x, I think I understand why this is happening. Given those assumptions, Astronomer's Visual Pack is being excluded because its dependent mod, EVE (for which AVP is one of many configurations), isn't currently marked as working on KSP 1.9.x and is configured in CKAN as such. Mods for one major version of KSP often work on the next, but not always and sometimes with serious issues. A quick check of the EVE topic shows that EVE isn't working on KSP 1.9.x. From looking at the reddit thread linked there, the break is in how things look in certain ways under KSP 1.9.x. However there may be other problems. You can configure CKAN to allow mods for KSP 1.8.x and not 1.9.x to be selected under KSP 1.9.x, but it's then up to you to do so carefully and realising it just may not work at all.

Impossible satellite contract? Ike is in the way?
Jacke replied to MZ_per_X1's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
What @Superfluous J said. As well, if there's enough leeway in the contract numbers, you could put the satellite in a higher or lower orbit that will clear Ike (and would make for some wicked passing views ). If there's not enough leeway, you can put the satellite in an inclined orbit the same radius as Ike's but inclined and out of phase with Ike, leading to a good separation every time the satellite goes through the relative ascending and descending nodes with respect to Ike. -
I've not updated them since KSP 1.6.1, but I believe the information on KSC biomes on sheet 2 of my KSP Science Checklists is still accurate.

Telling ain't going to cut it anymore. The KSP 2 devs have to start showing what the game is like, with serious demos to senior KSP modders and more. The proof of a game is in the playing. It's harder to change a game with an established community. And it's harder to believe a game corporation with an established bad reputation. Many people gave up on KSP in 2017, some only taking the free upgrades. To them, all this news just reinforces their decisions.

Well, since lithobraking on the final destination was ruled out, EVE is a bit more complex than Kerbin. Hmmm.... I've had another thought. @ManEatingApe, you said: (Perhaps you should update the original post?) But you didn't say "at rest with respect to the surface". Could lithobraking be back on the table? Is it possible to actually hit a body, have *most* of the spacecraft and the Kerbal survive the impact, and carry on to another body? Admittedly, it's kind of silly. But now I'm wondering if it's actually possible on the smaller airless bodies.

[1.8.1-1] [PLEASE FORK ME] Kopernicus & KittopiaTech
Jacke replied to Thomas P.'s topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
That may be true. The problem is you're pushing the point. That's equivalent to keeping asking for a release for a new version of KSP, which is against the forum rules. In the past, it has alienated mod devs. I understand your position. But you either need to get the current maintainers on board or fork the code. -
I'm not sure why Squad did that either. It could be that the aero-heating model was just so wrong. Most of the gross physics details in KSP are close to reality. Biggest two exceptions are to get 1g of gravity on a 1/10 Earth-radius Kerbin, you need planetary densities that aren't possible, as well as Kerbol would be an M-type red dwarf and not appear as a G-type star. (But difference #2 could be considered a side effect of difference #1.) But in changing that so late, it still took a lot of tweaking through 1.0.x and 1.1.x. To a degree, it's still not right. And why didn't they go whole hog and introduce a voxel aero model with compressibility as in FAR? It's not like it's that much harder or that much more compute intensive. Might have taken less time to get right.

Agreed. We also need an second stock RCS quad with the nozzles angled as on the Apollo Lunar Module, with the two horizontal nozzles at 90°, so they can be mounted as on the Lunar Module.

[1.8.1-1] [PLEASE FORK ME] Kopernicus & KittopiaTech
Jacke replied to Thomas P.'s topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Without examining the code, there's no certainty the functions can be separated without having most of the code shared anyway. All this is volunteer effort done in people's spare time, including any refactoring. I covered this more extensively already a week ago. I'm not in the know, but I would imagine Kopernicus for KSP 1.9.1 will be released, else there would be no support for software that takes as long or longer to update, like Realism Overhaul. "SABOT, Tank in open, ON!" "ON!" "LOADED!" "FIRE!" "Firing NOW! Target!" And so on.... -
It's good the project lead still has passion and hope for KSP 2. But that's him telling. We need showing now. Real gameplay footage. Serious information to the KSP major players/modders. Proper demos. Open alphas and betas.

We don't know these details. But that's rather moot anyway. What's important is that they were talking about a KSP 2 release extension and selling of Star Theory. And then they weren't, PD cancelled the contract, and then proceeded to do a Friday night mass mailing to all of the KSP 2 team to poach them. As @K^2 has pointed out in the posts I linked above, such wholesale poaching is not business as usually and is still considered a wrong move in a brutal industry. Even without the pandemic, it was conceivable that gutting Star Theory would kill it. And that's what the article and the various video commentaries on the article have focused on. You're implying nefarious motives on YongYea's part for not mentioning it. What difference did that make? YongYea didn't say KSP was stolen by TTI/PD from Star Theory. He said Star Theory was put on contract, there were negotiations that didn't conclude, then the contract was yanked and Star Theory's staff were poached, effectively destroying the studio. A third moot point. PD is a wholely-owned division of TTI, who's purpose is to manage TTI's relations with smaller dev studios. Is there any indication in this entire story that PD and TTI and their respective staffs at the time thought or acted differently, or had different policies on similar matters?
