Playing at 4k with a 3070 is comfortable. I'm getting 60 fps with the planet in view: major upgrade from March/April (when I last played). The clouds, planetary artwork in general - everything - folks at IG: thanks! ... actually - the whole point is... I'm playing again. Thanks

Science is pretty much stupid. Just get rid of it.

I'm not married to that particular thing. It's the 'gist' - mostly it's about purpose. There should be a purpose for having a Kerbal on board. There should be a purpose for each experiment. I suggested something like this way back when - and while it's only a suggestion, I think it would be a good thing to get players immersed in the worlds they've created - far more than any discoverable. -

@HebaruSan @Vl3d @MechBFP Y'all are hitting the mark. I actually really like science and think that science should be an integral part of KSP2. But the way Science! has been implemented leaves a lot to be desired. The combination of the 'science button' and 'research inventory' window is the UI choice that makes the implementation such a handwaive. Nothing exists in a vacuum. During the pre launch days there were plenty of people who said they hated science because of the Click on crew cabin for crew report EVA Kerbal for EVA report (Board) Click on the thermometer for temperature reading Click on the Mystery Goo container to observe Click on the Science Jr to see what it does. Etc. The team apparently addressed those folk's concerns. I'm saying they were the wrong people to listen to. I liked having to get out a Kerbal and have to collect the samples and return it to the pod. It gave me a reason to have a Kerbal in the ship. I liked hauling out and setting up the remote stations. I liked getting an individual pop up with each experiment - and in the prelaunch threads advocated for a much more detailed Science! experience (where each successful experiment 'filled out / unlocked' text and graphic information about every body and biome in a Kerbilopedia) To me one of the core strengths of the franchise is the correlation of the game and real world of science / rocketry. Read this from 2013 - and ask yourself whether KSP2 is rising to the challenge https://theworld.org/stories/2013-08-01/far-cry-call-duty-kerbal-space-program-inspiring-players-learn-physics-video- 366 replies

Which is easily missed. The player pretty much just pushes the button when the light flashes. I've got to spend more time clicking through the mission text (in Mission Control) than it takes to 'do the science' on site. It should be the other way around. -

FWIW - I and many others wrote extensively about our hopes for the Science mode in the pre-release threads. I know that the main thing the team is excited about is the Colony Building and Resource Extraction phase of the game, but the Science part should be more than a 'Mario got another coin' experience. I like the 'new biome' notification (science available) metric - but it should be more informative. Like telling us when we click where we are and why running science here should matter. It's kinda like what's missing is fulfilling the gameplay metric of 'purpose'. When the player is asked to do the different things sequentially and purposefully - there is both an immersive aspect and an educational aspect to what they're doing. Getting the feedback sequentially and in conjunction with the player's actions is also immersive and educational. I also miss the wacky text. @Just Jim could have crushed this (and sadly, any work he did is being lost in the way Science! presents itself in game. ) Had to take the dog to the vet. My thread title indicates that the current state of the Science! is merely a nod from the folks who did not appreciate the science aspect of KSP to give those who did a 'something' to do in 2. It's just a Mario Coin Sound - not educational or immersive -
It's clear that the folks who hated Science in KSP (because it was too clicky and slowed down their quest to recreate Sandbox Mode (via unlocked everything)) won the argument for how to design Science in KSP2. Edit - the only thing it's really doing well at the moment is slowing progression so players need to use small parts and can learn from mistakes. That aspect is well done. Having gameplay progression is a good thing. But losing the PURPOSE of going out to space and learning about the planets & biomes isn't great. In fact, I think it diminishes a lot of the work the team has done. The gameplay loop of KSP2 loses the point of what was fun about science in KSP. Instead of having your Kerbals do something purposefully: Be in the middle of doing something else Notice the blue light is flashing Press Science button Something happens on the ship, but too fast to notice what Generic list pops up and doesn't tell me what changed from the last time we hit the button or what we learned. I get enough points so that completing the mission isn't needed it's just something to do. The reputation of the original is that it inspired a generation. Yes, a lot of that had to do with orbital mechanics - but it also helped people learn about atmospheric pressure, temperature, magnetism; a whole host of things that humans do and have done in space. Often the Purpose for the mission: to send out a probe that can do things in a place so we can learn about the place. There's a reason we want to send a person to Mars. There's a reason rovers rove. The gameplay connection to real world science? Lost. (Hyperbole intentional and acknowledged - read my next few posts for the explication) Also - There is no story telling - just box checking. https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/topic/222109-science-is-pretty-much-stupid-just-get-rid-of-it/?do=findComment&comment=4358815

For Science! - My Thoughts (And Yours Too!)
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Scarecrow71's topic in KSP2 Discussion
Performance wise - absolutely! There should actually be fines for calling what we got in Feb an EAccess 'game' and charging people to Alpha. Yup. You Tubers love it - but otherwise it's not a game. How would it look if you redraw it? Ping me if you post a redesign, thx Gawd Dang YES! Science is pretty much stupid. (in fact I'm gonna post a thread on this) just push a button and a something happens but who knows what and it's inconsequential anyway, just points. -
Why did they give the default ship the name "Fly Safe"?
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Superfluous J's topic in KSP2 Discussion
Check your staging - less recognized, but more Kerbal (&useful) -
You can screenshot your crafts - just not anomalies. ...we likes to see kewl crafts, me precious!

Created a craft to do the ForScience mission of 'Orbit the Mun' with a Crew Module and a Relay Sat attached. Because the relay sat wasn't aerodynamic, I built a faring. ...which worked the first time; but I needed to add a few things (power, power storage, antennas) after I built the faring so I deleted it and tried to start over. No matter what I tried - every time I'd hit the check mark to complete the faring the second time, it disappeared. Nothing I tried would complete the faring. What am I missing?

For Science! - My Thoughts (And Yours Too!)
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Scarecrow71's topic in KSP2 Discussion
I left, disappointed, back in the late March / early April timeframe. Just started it back up... and it's a LOT better. Admittedly, about where I thought it would be (performance wise) back in February, with the content I guessed would come out by June. Shrug. That did not happen. But - it's better. -
totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Science & Spaceflight (sub) gives me 'Error 500' on every device and every browser whenever I'm signed in. I can backdoor my way into specific threads where someone has quoted me or liked content - but I have zero access to the main sub. (Signed out I can see everything) Likely has to do with permissions. Stranded and Magnemoe have similar problems -
I liked the way that worked - you had to plan a mission and build a satellite. It was relatively realistic - again, giving a purpose to the gameplay beyond the 'Sandbox build wacky craft' thing so popular on YouTube. I don't think a layer of educational realism is fluff. That said - Nertea's explanation of why it's not in now, and what they'd want to do to create it 'right' is an adequate explanation.

Questions About RCS For Scifi...
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
@kerbiloid Notice the use of effective countershading. The hunter, looking up from below will only see the blackness of space whereas the hunter from above will see the craft blending in with the bright albedo of the planet. The small combustion chambers are hidden in the black sections to disguise their existence -

Ok good - thanks. Being Kraken-Banned from this Sub makes it difficult to keep up -

I hate that robot. Waste of wumbo, if you ask me -
@Vanamonde - no hurry (holidays and all) But anomalies in spoilers should be a thing, again.
-
In the old days random posting of anomalies was a no no. You just happened to be here - not singling you out. ... Mine started heating up under 60 as well - so my guess is the sides are modeled to withstand 1000 k but the ends are not. Nothing else heats that high
-
Did the tank overheat with or without the heat shielding? And put stuff in spoilers!
-
After continued testing - it looks like the parts have more granularity than I thought. The sides of the fuel tank have plenty of reentry heat resistance - but the open end? Not so much. Pretty much what you would expect from a part shaped the way it is; but I was expecting simple 'the whole part has the same temp resistance' regardless of what the model showed. Not confirmation, just an educated guess.
-
Had fun. Haven't played since late March/early April, and I'm enjoying the new build. Found a few bugs - but they were of the 'huh, that's odd' type rather than the game breaking type. Good work team -- and thanks!

Flight A Kerbal On EVA Exerts A Force On The Vessel
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to 00Dave's question in Flight
Exact same thing happened to me. Craft was going 120+ m/s when I boarded - and then it slowed down again. Kerbal Power! Same face, btw. -
This happened to me as well - craft would not deploy the chute through staging - had to manually deploy, and as I did we hit the water. Craft dove deep and then bobbed to the surface. Fun fact: after this, I EVA'd the Kerbal - and the ship took off across the water getting up to 120+m/s. (Separate bug report submitted) Kerbal Power!
