Welcome to the forum @Jebediah Kerman - Earth, your problem has been moved from technical support as this is likely a gameplay issue. Some things to check first are, does your probe have power? Have you selected single ground station in the settings for your current game? Are you playing career, sandbox or science?

I'm sorry but that would be a breach of the terms and conditions of the game and would be illegal. KSP is regularly heavily discounted on the various game platforms so if your friend can wait a little, I'm sure they can get a great deal.
