Reasons against it being a heatshield:

It is possibly too small depending on the re-entry physics

Aero forces aren't slowing down a skyscraper at safe altitudes, and if the skyscraper ends up very low in the atmosphere, said skyscraper will flex and will snap somewhere around the thin Girder-noodle section

The dV saved from an aerobrake maneuver will be negligible compared to the dV provided by the ship itself. By the time it's travelling slow enough to not disintegrate at altitudes drag becomes useful, it would take barely a fraction of a percent of the starting dV to burn into an orbit.

Reasons for it being a heatshield: well clearly if it's brown and patchy then it could only be a heatshield, right?

Sorry for the necro, but this line of discussion is too interesting to pass up.

That wasn't my argument though, I was talking about how it could be a debris shield of some kind. And I only called it a "heatshield" for simplicities sake (though at that speed the particles your traveling through might actually cause dangerous heating).

  2. "The debate is still ongoing, since most academic summits held to address the issue have devolved into, on good days, petty name calling, and on worse ones, all-out brawls."

Mostly quoting for the sake of the reference but I have a feeling this debate is going to be going on for a long long time.

  3. Never thought I would get to a point where I would be arguing with people about clouds in a game about vaporizing frogs, life can be funny. All of the complaints comes from one, maybe two images of an early access game, none of what you see in these images is indicative of the entire cloud system in the game. Besides, the first game didn't have clouds at all, let alone any good atmospheric effects and now that we finally have them were comparing them to mods that hardly anyone can run? I know it comes down to personal opinion at this point but I don't think the clouds in KSP should be realistic at all. The clouds in the first game you could get with mods looked awful in the game, and my computer suffered while rendering them.

  4. Not a spokesperson for the team or anything but here's what I know;

    1. The DLC parts will not be in KSP2 to my knowledge, gotta have some reason to get people to play the first game.

    2. Unknown sadly, probably won't be known until release at this point :/

    3. Nope, it has been said on multiple occasions that you won't have to pay the regular cost if you buy it early.

    4. I assume it would work like the first game where you can download copies as many times as you want with your account.

i decided to recreate one of the beta screenshots in stock ksp, to compare graphics.

its safe to say there is a massive difference, but i do feel like the ksp2 screenshot is missing some aerodynamic effects. assuming the SRB's are clydesdales in the beta screenshot my ksp1 craft cant really be going much faster as it is only the SRB's firing. so i think there should be aero effects

As far as I'm concerned the missing effects are good, as far as I know you don't launch a rocket in the real world and have it be set alight on ascent. I think it has more to do with how they've tweaked the atmosphere than the actual effect being impossible to create.

This is just a question I had. Would KSP 2 have only planets designed by the developers, or would it also have procedurally generated planets?

Pretty sure all of the new planets and stars were designed by developers. But some of the smaller surface features are procedural to avoid spending hundreds of years designing hills of course ;)

  7. Those trees really add to the KSC's atmosphere, that little road you see as the plane flies up feels almost like a real place I could take a stroll down. Also, I can't be the only one here who actually really likes the clouds? They don't try to be super realistic like some mods I've seen, those mods look good of course but they're kind of jarring and out of place for KSP. But the clouds in the second game look really awesome but also cartoony and not too hard on certain potato PCs

You're telling me you stopped vaporising them in KSP1?

    Unacceptable.

(obligatory /s because this is the internet)

The ones I like more I try to reuse for a couple times ;)

Forgot to add the "space" to "green space frogs" lmao.
