Randomly, I decided to set the launch of the Saturn V-C mission in January of 1970. I realized that this would be modifying history and that this mission needed a name as it was stealing from a real-life Apollo mission. As I googled an Apollo launch timetable, I decided to settle for whatever mission launched first in 1970, and lo and behold- by sheer coincidence, it was Apollo 13! I guess even in alternate histories that mission is cursed. This is where the timelines really start to diverge, and as time goes on it will get more pronounced. This is just the first example of the Soviet side modifying the history of the American side, as up to this point the goings on of MISE haven't had a visible effect on NASA. This will be interesting for me to have to think about NASA's side as well, and I will sprinkle in their rival missions once in a while. Alternate Space Shuttle? Yes, please! Here's a spoiler of what's to come- the Zdaniye modular base system!

"The day has finally come. We have finally caught up to the USSR. Our modifications to the Saturn V have been finished quicker than anticipated, and the Russian N-1 for their Korolev 5 mission needs another month at least until it is ready, our sources say." This Saturn V is like no other. It is much stubbier and shorter than any other Saturn V and is in fact called the Saturn V-C. The decreased length is a result of the substantially less fuel required for a Minmus mission. The crew has been trained for a mission almost as long as Gemini 7, as their only chance to get out and stretch will be the landing. The crew module has been reorganized for more interior space and the design will be kept for future Apollo missions. The Lunar Lander, Aquarius, is simpler, just a single stage now. April 11, 1970, 19:13 GMT: Apollo 13. Launch: Dmitri leaned over and switched off the television set. Pirating that broadcast had technically been illegal, but no one at MISE cared. He stood up and said, "Comrades, we've had a stroke of luck here. I want all of you working overtime to get this mission ready, you hear me?" A chorus of agreements followed. "Da," was the general consensus. "Good. We've been given a miracle here. Don't waste it."

The Everyday Kerbal's Rocketry Vending Machine
Kimera Industries replied to Kimera Industries's topic in KSP Fan Works
Thanks! I'm glad I could give you a chuckle, that's really the whole point of this post. It would be fun to create a picture for each one, then make a mod for a vending machine using them in like FreeIVA or something. -
Yes, my bad. Rock-paper-scissors-shoot, anything you wanna do!

Finally made a post of a collection of ideas I've had for KSP/rocketry-themed snacks: This is designed so that if you have any ideas for an addition to the list, it can be easily done so! If not, you can surely enjoy the humor in their naming and descriptions.

(Not to be confused with the forum game with a similar name) Welcome, to the Astronaut Complex's vending machine! This thread will explore possible rocketry/kerbal-related snacks that could exist in the KSP universe. As a bonus, this thread is open to any vending machines built in Kerbal Space Program. Here is the default format for all submissions to the vending machine: [Snack Name] Based on or similar to [snack] (optional) [Short, probably a little funny description] [Snack Name: Witty phrase on packaging] (optional) Here's an example based on this format: Tea-Teb Energy drink. The energy drink of choice for kerbonauts. Often explodes after minimal shaking, which is why it has attained such popularity. Tea-Teb: Putting the "boom!" in triethylaluminium-triethyl"boom!'ane! Submit entries in the comments below for a chance to be entered into the stock of... The Everyday Kerbal's Rocketry Vending Machine! Drinks: Tea-Teb Energy drink. The energy drink of choice for kerbonauts. Often explodes after minimal shaking, which is why it has attained such popularity. Tea-Teb: Putting the "boom!" in triethylaluminium-triethyl"boom!'ane! Hypergol Gatorade-like drinks. Most often sold in a 2-pack of complimentary flavors, like how hypergolic fuels need their counterpart to ignite and combust. One flavor is the liquid fuel, and the other is the oxidizer. RocketFizz Brand presents these three signature flavors: Keralox Apple Comes in our standard grey can with orange accents, like the R-7 rocket. Special editions can look like a Falcon 9. Hydralox Blueberry Comes in an exotic orange can for insulation! Based on the Space Shuttle ET. Methalox Grape Comes in a fancy and snazzy silver can based on Starship. RocketFizz's other drinks include: Xenon Fizz A very, very fizzy soda. Comes in different flavors. It's like xenon if xenon were a drink. So fizzy, it's got at least 2000 Delta-V!* "Xenon Fizz: A little goes a long way..." *This Delta-V calculation was measured in vacuum conditions. Longburn Inc. is not responsible in any way for any rocket-based incidents involving Xenon Fizz. Hydrogen Slush The revolutionary premade slurpee! It's made with [REDACTED - PATENT PENDING]. Comes in many flavors! The bottle is covered with standard gold-looking multi-layer insulation, for your drinking pleasure. "Drink it before it melts boils off!" Cold Gas Thruster A highly pressurized can of cold nitrogen gas, with grape flavour! Spray directly into mouth or inhale it. "Cold Gas Thruster: No ignitions Required!" L.A.Y.T.H.E. Mineral Water Like expensive water on Earth, but it actually tastes good, like blueberries! Has a slight blue tinge. It comes in a cool bottle designed like a seperatron with a high-res picture of Laythe, which is, (at a minimum) 8K resolution. "Harvested from the shores of Laythe, we at L.A.Y.T.H.E aspire to bring kerbals the cleanest water possible. Straight from the tropics of this moon, to your stomach."* *Only about 30% of water is from Laythe. The rest is from Vall because our lander had too little delta-v. Chips: Honeycomb Thick hexagonal chips that are fun to crush. Best selling flavor is "Aluminum" (Salt-and-Vinegar). Like the aluminum honeycomb used in many aerospace vehicles for strength and rigidity, unlike KSP 2 rockets. Max-Q Based on Spicy Cheetos Extremely spicy crunchy chips, often mistakenly used as solid rocket fuel. Baked Goods: Kraken Munchies Like Goldfish Squid-shaped and hard to find. Served free with a luxury stay at the Bop Casino. ACPC Based on Nutty Buddy ACPC is the Space Shuttle SRB propellant, or in this case, Awesome Crunchy n' Puffy Crispers. Crunchy wafer with delicious cinnamon cream filling. ACPC: "Once you start munchin', you can't stop!" Grid Fin Wafers Generic wafer Shaped like stabilizing grid fins, Falcon 9 or BFR variants. Grid Fin Wafers: "Guide your tastebuds to deliciousness!" Regolith Bars! Similar to granola bars, but more of a sweet snack than an energy snack. A mix of nuts, oats, puffed rice, and chocolate chips with the bottom coated in a flavored dip colored to look like different planets' regolith. Regolith Bars!: No spacesuit damage, guaranteed! Mo-holes Based on donuts Usually overbaked pastries with holes stamped through the middle, sometimes dipped in chocolate because most kerbals don't like charred food. Strange because they enjoy charred rockets, but I digress. The idea for Mo-holes came when a kerbal attempted to bake a cake with zero knowledge of how to do so (like most kerbals), and promptly burned his house down and created a dark-brown, crunchy lump. He got so angry that he punched a hole in it, and in that moment it reminded him of the Mohole. Mo-holes: "We put the hole in Moho!" Salty Refilling Bars (SRB): They're filling and once you start eating one you can't stop until you're done! A smaller variant of the ACPC bars. SRBs: Now 25% taller! Duna Pebbles: A crunchy snack inspired by fried chickpea flour balls or the traditional Indian snack Boondhi! "Ever wanted to taste the planets but couldn't because space is a vacuum? We can get you one step closer to that goal by introducing Duna Pebbles!"* *This snack does not contain iron oxides from Duna's surface. May contain oxides from Moho, however. Candy: Orion Crunch! Small, spherical, Nerds-alike candy, coated in fizzy sour powder. They are dispensed out of a cute, environment-friendly, Orion Drive-themed container, which is often used to dispense the candy directly into your mouth. Orion Crunch: "Now with 97% less nuclear materials!" Sweet Little Sweets (SLS): They're sweet, little, and did we mention sweet. Best when paired with a couple of SRB bars. Sweet little sweets: The Moon's new favorite snack! RCS Based on Pop Rocks Rock Candy Surprise, has lots of quick puffs like RCS thrusters. LithoBreakers Based on Jawbreakers Stupidly hard, just like The Mun. Before purchasing, must sign a waiver freeing us from having to compensate you for damage to your teeth. Pol-O Mints Based on Polo Mints Now, experience the taste of your favorite moon! That same rush of Pol's volcanoes can be felt whenever you drop one of these into a RocketFizz brand soda! Pol-O Mints: Don't sue us! Please! Gummy Rockets Just gummy worms, in the shape of rockets. Gummy candies shaped like rockets. They are inspired by... well... what rockets do. Contains a soft, gooey center that explodes when you chomp down on one. They come in many different fruit flavors. Gummy Rockets: "They flex! They wobble! They... shouldn't do that..." EE Rocks (Eve Explodium Rocks) (Pop Rocks) They pop in your mouth! Maybe, a little too much. Harvested straight from Eve*! Buy now for the low, low price of 1,000 funds! *Possibly with some ejecta from Minmus. Also, no refunds, and you can't sue (or any family member) if you explode from EE Rocks. SiliRing Popping Candy A type of popping candy that tastes like Silicon with a hint of cotton candy, being based off the presumed taste of the rings of Sarnus. They come in ring-shaped containers and have different flavors for variations of the candy based on Urlum, Havous and Dres. "Ever wanted to sneak a taste of your favorite planet's rings? Now that fantasy won't be a dream any longer, thanks to SiliRing Popping Candy. Now with less silicon." Other: Mint-mus Ice Cream Fresh mint ice cream harvested directly from the surface of Minmus! Minty Fresh and Out of this world! May contain "traces" of silicon monoxide shards. Rover Fresh Minmus Mints Tin of mints (think Altoids) Kerbals can keep these in their rovers on long excursions, like going to the store to buy more Rover Fresh Minmus Mints. Rover Fresh Minmus Mints: Your breath has to smell great, even when flipping through the air uncontrollably! That's what kerbals eat and drink every day! If you have any ideas, place them in the comments below! (May edit for clarity.)

"Just another five minutes." *Rip Van Winkle happens* You have experienced a five-minute nap at maximum time warp. Congratulations, everyone you know is dead. Reading a sci-fi book /watching a sci-fi movie and watching it just have ships fly up and now they are magically in orbit.

Sounds pretty close to how KSP 2 does it. I only know myself because I watch Matt Lowne for that purpose (his KSP 2 and Space This Week) and I feel you about not being able to play it. I would gladly give the money to buy it, but alas, my PC is- indescribable. There's a reason I got it for free and the same reason my graphics are worse than an NES.

Ha, this is funny- before I tried the Trajectories mod, everything was trial and error via quicksaves. Trajectories isn't perfect, sometimes over or under-compensating, but hey- fewer quickloads are required.

Currently, I have the rocket for Korolev 5 (the you've-guessed-it upcoming Minmus mission) built and it works well. I want to do a preceding mission about the crew transport to the launchpad, and that's about half done. I also have a little surprise from America planned. On top of that, though, I am approaching my final tests for the semester and need to study for them. I will work on WoRM tonight, hopefully. Sorry, normally I'm more active than this. I'm just at this weird spot where it's easy to be on the KSP forums but hard to post stuff from KSP with screenshots since my KSP computer is separate from my computer with internet, it makes it a bit of a pain to set everything up.

I've never used the B9 procedural wing, what's it like? Is it pretty similar to the KSP 2 wings or vastly different?
-
Good thing I've started early, though I have yet to figure out what the "argument of periapsis" means. I don't think it's urgent, for "get into x orbit" contracts, matching inclination and then a Hohmann transfer works great. See the original comic here.
Special thanks to Randall Munroe for first telling me of KSP, he has started on a wonderful path of joy, satisfaction, and frustration. Thanks to Matt Lowne as well, for actually showing me what the game is and getting me excited for it.

Fixed the problem! Replaced persistent.sfs with the most recent backup as persistent.sfs had become corrupted from a garbage collector overflow. At last, I could complete my mission of simply landing a small cargo rocket SSTO. Finally. Oh, yeah, and I rescued my best save or whatever. Not as important as landing rockets like SpaceX. What mods are you using to make the wings dark? Is that an intentional effect to get a space shuttle-like heat shield? Let me know because I have wished for that quite a few times. Friction and brake setting at full for the rear landing gear, zero for the front, and disabled steering for the rear set. Still a little slidey but much more stable. If it creates too much friction, adjust the settings as needed.

Another update on: For posterity, I present: Making the Psyche Mission: Episode 3: Let's do this SpaceX style I added the last things I was missing to Psyche, namely RCS. I made it as simple as possible, with a single angled thruster on each corner. I realized that my slightly clipped solar panels are very overpowered even at long distances to Kerbol and I can remove many of my batteries and gain lots of bonuses from the decreased weight. I set up a Kal for solar panel deployment and another I can toggle for the sun tracking servo. I can't remember if this was in my last update but I used a medium landing gear for DSOC, turns out a cylinder smaller than .6m is hard to find and I had to compromise. That's not the fun part though, the fun part was landing a Falcon booster. The hard part was making and flying it. I watched a video solely for the landing gear and was mildly disappointed, nonetheless, I used the design on my prototypes (Grasshopper, if you will.) At first, I used a Kal for the deployment of everything since the piston and the gear weren't connected, but then I realized that if I used the same vessel interaction the piston could actually work to push the gear even if it's not connected. Early models suffered from lag. Improvements suffered from lag. My newest version suffers from lag. My PC is a scrap of paper at the mercy of my need for reaction wheels and suffers from lag as a result. Lag. Blech. I crashed several times, and I got more used to using KER's landing tool, though its suicide burn indicator is meant for airless bodies and doesn't account for drag. Finally, I landed without tipping over or exploding something, and it was the BEST feeling in the world. Like, melt-your-heart amazing. It's also given me huge respect for SpaceX and what they've done, truly awesome. Several attempts to merge boosters into a Falcon Heavy were suboptimal, but then, I changed over to 2.5m parts, redoing everything, over the previous 1.8m boosters. I realized, to save on parts count, I could make the gear out of wing pieces, too. The angled effect would create lift, gaining stability on the ascent but not so much lift on the descent as to overwhelm my airbrakes. Switching to an RCS system for Falcon could eliminate the need for so many reaction wheels, helping with lag. For now, though, all plans are on hold as I try to fix a problem with KSP that almost made me lose my only science save. Wish me luck! Andrew W. Kerman, Kimera Industries CEO November 13, 2023

Recreating the Psyche Mission!

Saved games won't load
Kimera Industries replied to davidpsummers's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Oh stars, this was the exact problem I was having! Thoroughly confused by the "just started" message as I had never seen it before, thank you! I probably make too many quicksaves but now I will make 300% more to be sure I never lose too much again. -
Gotta say Randall, xkcd, and his books are so cool. Anyway, the asteroid (Scott Moonley) crashes into the paper arc, wrapping itself in it and as we all know, paper beats rock. @TechieV wins! Rock-paper-scissors-shoot, anything you wanna do!

Hey, composing is easy- it's just dots on lines! Besides, it sounds good in my head! Getting all excited about the possible Starship launch this Friday when it will probably get moved back.

I'll do it: The command pod's reaction wheel causes it to roll uncontrollably, crashing into the setup of the game. Calvin changes the rules so that an out-of-control spacecraft disrupting the game gives him extra points, but Hobbes claims he did so first, and they start fighting. It's a tie! My response to @Great Liao's entry: Rock-paper-scissors-shoot, anything you want to do!

I reloaded a craft so I could redo the reentry since I had to get a precise landing at the KSC for a SpaceX-type vehicle. On reloading, I adjust my course and quicksave again to save effort in case I crash my ship again. When I press save after naming my quicksave, I get a pop-up window saying: Fatal error in GC Unexpected stack overflow I click OK and KSP crashes. I try loading the game again only to see that my science save (the save I was playing on) says "just started" instead of the normal flights, money, and science stuff. I try loading this save and I can't. Nor can I load any other saves. I try making a new save, and it loads. I go back to the menu and now I can't load that one either! Same results after restarting KSP twice and my computer once. Mods: RCS build aid, FreeIVA, RasterPropMonitor, Docking Port Alignment Indicator, Kerbal Engineer Redux, Airplane Plus, Trajectories, kOS, and all of their dependencies, all installed with CKAN. Previously that day I had been experiencing issues with Trajectories telling me it shut down due to "too many iterations." Could be related. Update: I tried a new world and the same thing happened when I tried to revert a flight. Curiously, I could still load that world after my game crashed. Update 2: Found a thread with a similar problem. Will try using their solution, problem appears to be a corrupted persistent.sfs.
