A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
Quite so; since I'm working in Powerpoint, I have the opportunity to review it all there and make changes before I post--which is really great, since if I do make a mistake I have to correct it in the .ppt, then save as an image, upload the new image to Imgur and delete the old one, update the current chapter's album contents, and finally edit the Forum post to link to the corrected image. @Just Jim you could similarly work offline with a text editor or word processor first, leaving spaces for your images (or even pasting them into your draft document as you go)--but that does add a step you might not want to bother with. -
A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
Well, (he said, setting directional SAS to "hold topic" mode ) this does bring up an important point for authors writing in the age of autocorrect--quite often the computer is wrong, especially when you're writing in a genre for which the computer's dictionary isn't designed! Homonyms are frequent stumbling blocks, as are declension's declensions. And then there are evolving usages; I've long maintained that 'alright' isn't a proper word, but I can see that there's no red wavy line under it in my browser, so that spelling must be all right after all. Bottom line is, if you're a writer you and you alone are responsible for your content. Spellchecker is just a tool and like all tools you have to be the master of it and not the other way around. And, grammar and spelling do count--sure, you're going to make mistakes, but if a work is riddled with them it will be hard to follow and will look amateurish. Good presentation in any art form helps the reader/viewer/listener reach and immerse in the work itself, rather than struggle through layers of poor form that hide the artist's message. So, spacebar or space bar? Rocketship or rocket ship? Or even, alright (*shudder*) or all right? The 'correct' choice will always be the one that best conveys your vision to the readers. That's what we're really doing here. -
Not against Nimzo, no, but then again there are very few Kerbals who would. After a couple of years of lessons (in between his shipboard duties and writing about murdery murderers) Kenlie is probably playing at a Class B amateur level: strong enough to mop up the board against any 'social' player and maybe sneak a win at a local tournament, but still nowhere near Master rank. I think you're right--and before that, he didn't fly with Bob at all, since Lisa was the science officer on the Duna mission. I'm going from memory here, but I think the only time we see them together (chronologically) before the Eve rescue is in the flashbacks to Dilsby's and Val's Kerbahashi Maru test simulations. Thanks! And as Aku pointed out, it's not one I've explored much. But as two of the four Original Orangesuits they must have flown together in the early days of the Program, before their adventures were recorded in comic form. Hmm, could those experiences have anything to do with Bob's current attitude, i.e. his frequent raising of "concerns"? Maybe!

Annnnnnd we're back... Very cool lifting off Pol and seeing the shadows of the spiky rocks on the ground--almost makes up for not having scatter turned on when I landed. Also loved seeing that alignment of the inner planets. Not sure where Kerbin and Kerbulus are in that shot, possibly in front of/behind the sun. Should be a quick trip down and up with Jeb, Bob and Jeb's "lucky" socks, and then off to the next moon. Bop isn't in a good spot right now so I might go to Vall first. We'll see!

Thanks! A few people have mentioned that and I appreciate it, though I try not to talk about rep because, well, you know... *kicks pebble with toe* Now, thought I'd mention before anyone asked (since we all know that I don't like it when anyone asks!) that I've gotten very, very busy so won't see a significant update before at least Monday. I may or may not be able to post an insignificant or semi-significant update this afternoon, we'll see how it goes And no, this has nothing to do with Pokémon.

All right, then. Space doors are open, Tedus is in the LSO station, and... ...what could possibly go wrong?

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about him... or Bob, Bill, Val, Clauselle, Kenlie, Lisa, Melbe, Sarge, Dilsby, Nimzo or even Tedus! But unfortunately the last bit of business for Pol is to visit the Poles, and that's not really a job for the rover. Hm, can we all stand one more Gumdrop mission?

I tease: Okay, so it wasn't six hundred tons of ore--it was eight hundred. The ship now masses a whopping 1400 tons fully loaded, but minus a few probes. Interested parties can calculate the dry mass from the open resource window. And you can see that Bill and Tedus are really excited about the next phase of their excellent adventure!

My thoughts exactly. Two factors to consider: one, the CO (Val) had ordered Sarge to take Junior Looty Melbe "wherever she wants to go." Two, nothing Melbe was doing put Sarge or the mission in serious danger. Contrast with Sarge under Bill's orders trying to land the prototype Longboat on Kerbin without a parachute

We've seen Kerbulan ships before with LV-Ns; Kenlie Kermulan flew one to destroy Evestation and Le Scansat. Apparently they were able to figure it out from information Werhner did not destroy; here's the page where that was discussed, from the Evil Interlude "Military Intelligence" Fortunately the Kerbulans are still stymied by Werhner's clever misdirection (he changed all his notes to read "E=mc3") and have been unable to extrapolate from the LV-N to any other nuclear technologies.

Well I wouldn't want you to forget all about the Kerbulans, would I? I think @SaturnianBlue might have already tried that one... Well, the rover doesn't really have a transmission system; each wheel has its own independent electric motor, right? But yes, you do point out a very curious and potentially contradictory situation. After all, this is a comic where docking goes "CLICK!" and undocking goes "UN-CLICK!".. where brakes go "Squeek!" and parachutes go "floomp!"...where breaking a writing rule makes the ship go "WHOOOP! WHOOOP! WHOOOP!" and writing itself sounds like "typa-typa-typa". But when a rover backs up, the driver has to go "Beeeep! Beeeep!" all on his own. I'd like to explain it all to you, but as you well know I can't because I'm dead. *SLUMP*

This is good stuff, @burn_at_zero! I love to see such detailed planning, tests and contingencies. I have a Jool-5 in progress myself built around a basically stock mothership (the only mods are for life support, and for power generation to support life support) At a total count of about 800 parts the mothership is flyable in 1.1.3, but there is indeed some lag--not in the "seconds per frame" range, but maybe a 1/2 to 1/3 speed kind of thing. As to the craft, I went with a single stage Tylo lander/rover that will refuel on the surface. It has four drills, an ISRU and fuel cells. I had originally tested a design with LV-N engines but ended up going with aerospikes; it just wasn't going to work without the thrust of a chemical rocket engine. This craft will also handle Vall. For Laythe I have an SSTO floatplane, pretty basic design with twin RAPIERs. RCS-fueled landers will handle the small moons. The ship also carries scansats and a pair of expendable atmospheric probes for Jool itself. Good luck! Jool-5 is no joke, especially doing it with a single craft. I started my mission last November and I've only gotten to one moon so far!

As much as I enjoy watching everyone chat about their favorite sauces, here are some more pages! So yeah, fueling! At this point in the savegame (which is actually some time after this last panel) the monopropellant and oxidant are filled and we have 50,000 units of LF left to go. Intrepid has been on the surface for about 120 hours which I think is not too bad... a few Kerbin-sized days more and we'll be ready to take off!

Don't worry, @Wildcat111, I already know exactly when the Kerbulans will come, and what the Kerbfleet crew will do about it when they get there. Feel free to speculate though

Not intending to land on any more--we'll lift off from Pol with the tanks filled, and should then have enough aboard for all the landing craft to do their jobs. Qwammer will refuel itself on Tylo and on Vall. Depending on the fuel situation I may land the ship on Pol one more time before heading for home. True, but then again I did activate thrusters and use IJKL to avoid spiky rock formations when Sarge and Melbe finished their Highlands survey and barrelled downhill back to Intrepid! I'll figure something out, I'm sure--there are a lot of keys on the keyboard to play with. Heh. Well ,as far as we know the Kerbulans haven't arrived in the system yet. Pieces of the Intrepid are disappearing, though. We're down to one Jooldiver and a few scansats. I was thinking of firing a scansat from the surface to intercept Bop while we're waiting for the tanks to fill up; anything to shed part count!

Sadly, Forum rule 2.2e may preclude the former, and vacuum the latter. Though I did once enter a replica '69 Dodge Charger called "Kerbal Lee" in a "Dukes of Duna" driving challenge

Nah, I'll just make it canon. Driving is somewhat challenging, but loads of fun. On level ground I can get the rover up to about 10 m/s... of course any bump will get you airborne and heaven help you if you attempt to turn. There's a reaction wheel right in front of the docking port, I tend to drive with the dialogue box for it open so I can quickly turn it on whenever I need to re-orient the wheels towards the ground (have been too lazy to remap the keyboard, so WASD handles both rover controls and SAS right now--reaction wheel is off when driving, otherwise stepping on the accelerator would flip it over) And yes, I see that there's an "SAS Only" option on the reaction wheels now but I haven't bothered figuring that out yet, I'm too busy making screenshots and word balloons
