  1. Crews do often name their own ships, e.g. Clauselle's Alouette. If we did let Wernher name it, it'd end up being something sausage related. Knockwurstkraft? Der Wienerdriller? Yeah, maybe I'd better not... maybe Nimzo will come up with something non-food related. Glad you mentioned that; NOMS and other life support hardware will all be on the main ship. (which the Agenda is certainly not--like its close namesake the Agena it's just for docking practice) I don't expect any of the landers' independent missions to last more than 14 days, so we should be OK.
  2. When you're discussing Episode VII with your kids and you can't stop calling him "Tylo Ren".
  3. Aaaand we're back to regular programming: So yes, I decided that with all the mining I'm likely to be doing, I could use a third engineer on the mission. Enzin Nimzo Kerman is fresh out of the Academy, where he was captin of the cheks team. And no, his name wasn't auto-generated; it's an homage.
  4. Great stuff, love the craft designs of 'team red' as well as our KASA heroes. That chomper ship is truly terrifying!
  5. Ah, but if he doesn't lie to Wernher, he breaks his promise to Other Bill! Either way, a comeuppance is coming!
  6. Telling the truth is the right thing to do. Lying might make a better story. Lie, Bill! Lie your green butt off! Lie, lie, LIE!
  7. Cheating to redress a glitch is not cheating at all! Do what you have to do and keep these great stories coming. I've had my share of odd Kraken events as well--sometimes it's been a bad orbit on just one ship that threw the whole save in disarray, and manually editing that one ship fixed all. Maybe that's the case for you--if not, ALT-h away and good luck
  8. This song kinda just came to me while I was in the mall looking for one last ?!!@# gift. Happy holidays from... THE KERBULAN EMPIRE!
  9. L-dock worked for me also. Key was to get everything aligned before launch in the VAB using the Merge command to put the spaceplane next to the docking assembly. Note that since both ports on the plane are shielded, you can't get a node to attach to them when trying things out--so I temporarily put a standard port aft, linked the mating assembly to that standard port, moved the ventral port around until it looked close enough visually, then saved the L-bracket subassembly and put it on the target ship (and replaced the shielded port on the plane) The result: successful multiport dock on the first try! backing in... I aimed for the aft port first and trusted the ventral port to follow. And there it is!
  10. Ummm, to be quite honest I just threw that together because I needed an image for the comic. But yeah, the back end needs draggyness and controlyness, definitely. And I may just ditch the fairing and launch the thing in a Mk3 bay--because (1) it usually works, and (2) that design choice seems to bother certain readers Right, two engines on a 22-ton craft covers a host of difficulties This one is very interesting to fly, I always have to remember that the cockpit is not exactly pointed where it wants to go! I considered angling it (the cockpit) down to match the engines, but that would be too draggy in the water I think. Regarding landing speed--well, with full flaps and brakes and the engines lit, I can water land on Kerbin at about 60 m/s. We'll see what that works out to in the thinner air of Laythe. I think as long as I can hold it reasonably horizontal and keep vertical at -1-2 m/s, I'll be fine. If not, well, then somebody will get his wish for a rescue mission. Regarding the thruster blocks, I don't tend to have a problem with them as long as I have a radiator somewhere. Note that there are no blocks on the top or bottom; I handle Y-displacement with side-mounted PlaceAnywheres. So, the total RCS layout is just four 4-way blocks and four Anywheres. ETA: I would probably use all Anywheres because they give a cleaner-looking line, but I can never find a good place to put them for X-translation as my noses tend to be pointy. You? Never There's a huge difference between a nice technical discussion like this and "HEY KUZZTOR UR DOING IT WRONG SHOOD UZE MOAR MODS!"
  11. Zuzu Kerman: Look, Daddy! Teacher says, every time a bell rings a mod becomes stock. George Kerman: That's right, that's right! [Looks heavenward] Attaboy, Porkjet!
  12. Sorry guys, I skipped a page accidentally when I first posted. It's fixed now. Also, there WILL be a holiday special tomorrow!
  13. "Cheating to fix poor game design is not cheating at all"-- Bill Kerman, Kerbfleet Corps of Engineers
  14. Agenda One is really wobbly, even with the vernors. But it's only for docking tests so it's OK. And yes, that's two orthagonally oriented docking ports. The X7 has a... well, you'll see it when you scroll down It will, or at least that's still the plan. I'm just making sure I have the docking interface correct before I try to build another hangar. Why tell you this design works... when I can show you ? @Farex--I find that low wing area actually works best for SSTO. It minimizes drag, and a craft with loads of thrust is going to be going fast enough to get lift from even a very small wing. Look at RL high-altitude interceptors like the F-104; stubby little wings is all they need. So, looks like I have a multiport docking solution! Next we'll try to get the big Tylo craft into the Agenda's bay, which will likely happen after Christmas. I may have time for a holiday page before then. We'll see! ETA: Whoops! Sorry, skipped a page. So yeah, the engines are above COM to keep them out of the water, and I used the rotate tool to aim them UP so that their line of thrust is closer to the COM. Offset is about 3 degrees, which is manageable. The other key to the design was rotating the wings up a bit so it would get enough lift to come out of the water even when floating with the nose aimed at the horizon.
  15. There's another kind? Oh, sure... the trouble is taking off again from 'Runway H2O'. That's what took me so long between the last page, and this one:
  16. I should have been more clear: I'm pretty sure I can make a "good" deadstick landing anywhere on Laythe. As always, we'll find out together
  17. Well, that's not entirely true, is it? Think about how much time passed between when you first saw the words "Order Zero" and when Bill told you what it meant. But I do actually fly the missions and let the chips fall where they may--Tedus would have died and stayed dead if I hadn't pulled off the crash landing. And to the newbie, welcome. I appreciate your comment. My own counsel will I keep, though, on whether Kerbfleet would ask a scientist to pilot a spaceplane, or whether I would introduce some random character from your save into this comic, toss aside the hours of R&D I've spent designing a seaplane capable of a deadstick landing anywhere on Laythe, and abuse my not-inconsiderable piloting skills in order to kill said character for your amusement.
  18. It's an upside-down snowman blank.
  19. I did indeed have this bug as documented in the comic. The ship had wings attached to the cargo bay just like the OPs'. I 'fixed' the problem by quicksaving, and reloading until the problem randomly went away. I also recall seeing that it could be solved by cycling the cargo bay, but I did not verify that in my save, having already landed and decommissioned the ship.
  20. Yeah, you talked me out of it Ah, the strategic triad of tirades to management! That one never gets old Not exactly... I haven't quite decided what to call it yet. It might replace the Longboat you saw, or supplement it. And also meat.
