My first return trip to Eve (Pic heavy)
Mister Dilsby replied to xendelaar's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Eve descent and ascent are no joke--great work and thanks for posting this as an example of how it can be done. -
Planning a three part interlude. Part the first: ...and I'd like to invite the amazing GregroxMun to drop a post here explaining how he did it, so that everyone can rep the heck out of him for Admiral Shirley's awesome uniform! Thanks, Gregrox!

Eve return possible in 1.0.4?
Mister Dilsby replied to CrashTestDanny's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I think most of the maps haven't been updated for the new aero model, and those that have been haven't necessarily been updated using the absolute optimal combination of lift/drag design. In any case, I think the answer to your OP question is a pretty clear "heck yes!" Good luck, maybe you can put your successful ascender in Mission Reports to inspire others -
That would follow the Trek sequence pretty well, wouldn't it? But no, he's got a couple of ranks to go before he's in any danger of getting chained to a desk. Right now he's only a Looty Kernel and they fly all the time IRL.

Awesome! If he's anything like my Tedus he'll be highly survivable, but there is no such thing as a "resusable" spaceplane if he's driving.

Eve return possible in 1.0.4?
Mister Dilsby replied to CrashTestDanny's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Booya. Five kerbals, 600dV to spare. -
I'll admit, I wanted the soundtrack to be "Magic Carpet Ride"-- but as soon as the M7 lifted off this was what I was humming. Same on the descent--must be something about the flames and ponderously heavy atmosphere that invariably drives the mind to Wagner.

I believe the correct answer is five. Or another way of seeing it: if you look in your 'settings' window it will display the last five posts/people to whom you have given rep. You cannot give any of those people rep again, but I believe you can give it to anyone else (unless you have hit the 24 hour limit) And I guess I do hand out rep like I hand out candy (Halloween excepted): as a treat to make people happy, but only at appropriate times and for appropriate behaviors, and never so much that it will make someone sick

JEM : Jool 5 - The Hard Way - Mission Complete!
Mister Dilsby replied to Starhawk's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Excellent report, and what a ship that is! The explanation of the tailplane deletion made perfect Kerbal sense to me. And I have always wanted to say this--"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Starhawk again." -
I had always intended to asparagus stage. I simtested a prototype with simple staging, thinking I would just see how short I was and then know what other changes I had to make. When the prototype blasted to orbit from sea level with 400 m/s to spare, I decided to just go with what I had.
-
Quite possibly, but there are two factors here: (1) the density of Eve's atmosphere--I wanted to get out of the area of max resistance and heating as quickly as possible. Drag is of course enormous here, and there is a real risk of burning up. FYI the first simtest ended with the Mk1 cockpit exploding due to overheating, at about 10km. (2) stability--call it poor design if you want, but in simtesting I Bill found myself himself unable to control the ship in a lower turn. In fact, it started to flip even doing the turn at 30km--but the air was thin enough I could get back on track. The careful reader will note I lampshaded this with Bob's comments in the pre-flight checklist I've also been asked why I didn't asparagus-stage. The answer is pretty simple: I had always intended to. I simtested a prototype with simple staging, thinking I would just see how short I was and then know what other changes I had to make. When the prototype blasted to orbit from sea level with 400 m/s to spare, I decided to just go with what I had. I guess that's also the answer to why I didn't spend more time on the ascent profile Lastly, the design requirement to SSTO from Kerbin came into play. The ship actually had less margin doing that than it did getting to Eve orbit...so I took the first solution that worked for both ascents, went with it, and got back to writing the comic.

Yep, hard as it is to believe, not everyone has time to read the funny papers. That's why when I post stuff outside my normal thread I generally post it "straight". Glad you liked the lander, Red, thanks!
-
It's going to look pretty much like the American justice system looks on TV and in film. Working title of the trial scene: "A Few Good Kerbs". Turning off "the author is dead" mode for a moment, since it'll be a bit before this gets clarified in the comic... Bill's plan ended the moment they achieved orbit. He really had no thought beyond that, except that he was willing to risk any consequence to save his friend. Val is a serious Kerbfleet officer who knows her duty. Regardless of the successful outcome (and awesomeness!) of the rescue, there wouldn't be a shred of discipline left to the Fleet if the way they carried it out was not formally examined. - - - Updated - - - Well, they've already retained counsel. Using Kenlie as an attorney would be problematic, since he's going to be called as a witness for several of the charges pertaining to the taking of the Kranefly. Now, now, now, these guys are a lot of things, but they are never violent. You must be imagining some kind of... mirror universe Jeb. Thanks! I want to see how it turns out, too. Eve is maybe a little easier to get up, and a lot harder to get down, than it was in 0.90. I think it'd be a real challenge to do it without surface refueling. Again, props to the fantastic Parkaboy for teaching me how to do that, and to the creator of Free IVA for making it possible.

Here it is at the moment of liftoff. The M7 lander took off SSTO from Kerbin, was towed to Eve, refueled in orbit, and made a powered landing. The vehicle at right made a separate landing, performed a surface dock to the M7 and fueled it for takeoff. If you'd like more details, the complete "mission report" appears in Eve: Order Zero
-
Sorry, I must disagree, or maybe I didn't understand one statement or another. If he carries the OMS engines to orbit fairly and in a single stage, how does that ruin the fun? Personally I think it's even more fun to SSTO with a clever combination of jets/orbital insertion motors/interplanetary engines than with a single engine type e.g. RAPIERS.

I got five Kerbals from Eve surface (<1000m) to orbit with over 600 dV to spare! Whooooo! First time I tried an Eve ascent since the old "Eve Rocks" challenge in 0.90.

KSP The Martian - setup is complete
Mister Dilsby replied to gsamelon's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Whoops, I meant to tell you how to embed Imgur in my comment, but instead it actually embedded the album in my comment! You do it like this: [jmgur]iJocV[/jmgur] except that you spell Imgur correctly -
Let's do this. Ten pages--and without further interruption, the end of Chapter 8.

Show off your awesome KSP pictures!
Mister Dilsby replied to NuclearWarfare's topic in KSP Fan Works
Fueled and ready for takeoff! On ground, L-R: 1st Looty Tedus Kerman (Air Svc Pilot), Looty Dilsby Kerman (Command Pilot), Lt Kernel Jebediah Kerman (Air Svc Pilot), Lt Comder Bill Kerman (Kerbfleet Corps of Engineers). In cargo bay: Looty Bob Kerman (Science Corps) -
I did try--that's how Jeb ended up hanging from the Billmobile landing gear by his ankle. And yeah, I did completely forget about the science when designing the two ships: I guess my only concern--like Bill's--was getting everyone off the surface, and I knew I could do that with a crew transfer. Tho it begs the question of exactly where the Jeffries tubes run through the M7's structure: I mean, you'd have to go through the landing gear into a Mammoth engine, then up the Kerbodyne tanks, and then I guess squeeze through either a strut or a fuel duct to get to the core section--yeah, maybe better not to think about it. So since I did release page 18 a bit early now you all know what the soundtrack will be for next update...

Actually those exist; GregroxMun made a nice set, and there are others. I'm working on a Kerbfleet version myself for the next story. But color alone still might not be enough, especially if by chance your landing party consists of all males or all females: PS yes this page is canon, #8.18.

"You put on the blue suit, or the yellow suit, or the green suit, the story ends. You wake up in your cockpit and believe whatever you want to believe. You put on the red suit, you stay in persistenceland, and I show you how deep the mohole goes."
