A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
Looks good, though it might be best to just put the link here rather than duplicate post - - - Updated - - - Absoultely! -
Another excellent installment--good idea using the runway while they're working on the pad, I guess you can always launch something as long as BOTH pad and runway aren't out of order, and as long as there are launch clamps

"Duna, Ore Bust!" -- a KSP Graphic Novel (COMPLETE)
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
^^all correct, but doing it right all the time wouldn't be very Kerbal, would it? I should point out that the flight controls ("conn") have not been transferred--that happens independently from command of the ship in Kerbfleet. Val is still piloting. So once the two of them collect themselves and complete any command transfer unambiguously, that commander will decide whether to punch out to orbit and send for a Pogo, or attempt a landing.- 598 replies

[11/26/15 Update] Say Hello to the Light-Green Group!
Mister Dilsby replied to Endersmens's topic in Kerbal Network
Take your time--though the list is going to be a moving target. You might want to consider scaling back a bit, maybe not listing everyone all the way down to the single light green. The list has already grown several-fold since Upsilon started it, and it is not going to get any smaller... -
What the what? Holy Moho indeed! I liked the effect you put on the "vision" ship, very other-kerbly.

"Duna, Ore Bust!" -- a KSP Graphic Novel (COMPLETE)
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Well, as of this morning the Hummlebee's mission is over one way or another. Now I have several hundred screenshots to go through, some custom builds to make, sound effects, lighting... probably a little gaff tape... this could be a while. Heh. I could always have Walt and Mort run a fund drive  You are absolutely right, and a rare error from Val to not anticipate this. They should have established the handoff BEFORE they were in the middle of a crisis, like they did when entering Duna. I knew I could count on you guys One of these days I will have to try to reproduce the effect in a controlled situation to figure out what causes it. But as to being able to land, I found i did not have sufficient control even with thrusters over Duna. Next pages will answer one of your questions but raise several more Unfortnately for the edges of your seats, I am leaving in a couple of hours to climb Mt. Marcy with my son and some friends. No update is likely before Monday. So now's your chance to re-read everything, wildly speculate, and otherwise have a great weekend- 598 replies

A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
I think so long as you treat the characters un-equally it works. If you put the reader's focus everywhere, it will be nowhere. If you make it clear that supporting characters are just that, then they will indeed work to support the main characters. Of course this is a place to "show" who is important and who is not. But as they say in the theater, "there are no small parts" even the "unimportant" characters need to be interesting to the reader for however many seconds the reader is focused on them. -
Jeb still launched first in the 'remastered' version, so I think you're OK.

Dunno, only you know the story you want to tell--I'd suggest thinking of something awesome you want to show your readers at the end of the story, and then figure out the steps that will get you there. - - - Updated - - - That makes sense, I like the word "kerbthology"! Sure, if your stories hang together and all have the same rules and feel. Edgar Rice Burroughs and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle worked in a similar way -
The rescues are really going to eat into that number--if it was me, I'd just build ONE very efficient ship with lots of seats for passengers. He could drive it around for months sweeping up stranded Kerbals, then send them down in batches of 16.

A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing

I played with that a little bit just now in the Duna story: What would n00b Kerbonauts who joined the program in the last two years think of the crew that left for Duna before they entered the Academy, and is just now coming back? Hence "Kenzin Enlie", a fanboy who positively squees at the prospect of docking with the main characters and firing a burn for them. He gets four lines and a control action over two pages, and that's it. He'll likely show up again for comedic relief and to reinforce the rock star status of the orangesuits--hopefully he's memorable enough that I can just bring him out of the box for a one-off joke as required - - - Updated - - - Well if you want to do a great escape, you could start by mining The Great Escape and other POW movies for memes and tropes. -
"Duna, Ore Bust!" -- a KSP Graphic Novel (COMPLETE)
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
You give me too much credit. Hummlebee is just a portmanteau of hummingbird and bumblebee... I understand exactly enough Swedish to get through a set of Ikea instructions - - - Updated - - - I probably should have. Really I thought I had enough in the tank to make Micarooni without capture, so I set for 400km so I could intercept easily in one orbit... and ran out of fuel.ETA: Also I might have been coming in a little bit faster than optimal, because remember I took a "short cut" home.- 598 replies

My 10-year old son plays sometimes. Mostly he makes "party barges"--rovers built like pontoon boats with lots of seats and lights--and drives them off the end of the runway into the sea. Although he still can't really dock, he asked me to copy my asteroid station into his game so he can visit it. My 13-year daughter doesn't really play, but she knows all about it and reads my comics. When I told her Lisa Kerman's character was based a little bit on her, that made her VERY happy
-
Well, the mission was an unmitigated disaster--but the report was excellent! When dealing with big rocks especially 1900 ton monsters I think it's always better to PULL than PUSH. Though with the asteroid that close even my Kranefly might have had trouble shifting it in time. Anyway, better luck next time and a good thing it didn't land on your launch pad with you so short of funds to repair it

"Duna, Ore Bust!" -- a KSP Graphic Novel (COMPLETE)
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Thanks! I do plan to dress it up a bit and share it in the Exchange. That poor guy. He can never get promoted to Looty now, can he? Excellent question! I guess my 'out' is that when I docked them, Kranefly was the active ship, and on map view the combined ship was called Kranefly not Hummlebee. So technically he was not part of their crew, they were part of HIS crew. I suppose he's like a kid who got to jump on stage for five secconds with One Direction or whoever the mulch the kids listen to these days. True, I did consider this--and if I wasn't planning on decommissioning Hummlebee I would want to leave it parked at Micarooni Station for future missions and bring them all down in a Pogo. But I really want to try landing this sucker--it would be anticlimactic not to. Anyway Val won't have forgotten what happened on Duna, hopefully she'll have a good contingency plan.- 598 replies

FWIW, I think it's fine. The time limit is a major hook of your story and it's OK for the reader to see this on the "back of the book jacket" as it were, before it's revealed to the characters. Very interested to see how you pull this off, seeing as my crew is just now making it back from Duna and it's already past your three year time limit. And then there's the crew around/on Eve!

That sort of wackiness happened with me when I did not use the quotes, and I presume it was returning everything that had "QUOTE" in it which is everything. I wonder if you've been quoted so often, Red, that it can't handle the number of results and limits the results to the older posts? -

Yup, no need for the [ at all. Anyone else old enough to remember Reverend Jim's driving test on "Taxi"? Jim: What does a yellow light mean? Elaine: Slow down. Jim: What... does... a... yellow... light... mean? -

Arggh! No, I was just trying to bold the part you search for. This is becoming comedic! Make everything after the colon at the end of this sentence your search term, and nothing else: "[quote=endersmens"
