Longer re-entry
Gargamel replied to Cheif Operations Director's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
IIRC, Apollo did do a direct return from the moon, without any extra orbit's around the Earth. Gameplay, for the most part, is dictated by the laws of physics established within the KSP universe. That's the whole point of the game. It should not be modified based on what feel's right or looks good. That's where unbelievable and crap games come from. I don't want Micheal Bay anywhere near my game. The atmosphere is only so thick, and you are going really fast. Mixed with atmospheric density curves, you will, by law, hit certain speeds after certain amounts of time. The trade off is G forces. Humans are far less tolerant of high G loads than Kerbals. If there is no ill effect on a kerbal, why bother adjusting a reentry profile? The laws of KSP physics were written to balance out the game. They inadvertently ended up making a few concessions, one of which is a 'simplified' re-entry profile for landing on Kerbin. If they made changes to this, it would have consequences far reaching throughout the game. Planes would fly completely differently, if you remember the pre-1.0 soup-o-sphere. Launch profiles would have to be redone, which means common rocket designs would go out the window. It would probably affect atmospheric density curves on other planets too, completely nixing current mission profiles. Changing the laws of physics to make something 'feel' better won't be a good thing. -
Crashing on Startup
Gargamel replied to Deralek's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
This appears to be an Nvidea driver. Update it and see if it works. -
Look at the pictures. It's a poorly drilled hole from the inside.

I would have expected the ship to undergo a pressure test. Just pump another atmo or so of air in there and make sure the pressure holds. But it should be within tolerances. Hear Hear! I'd much rather own a mistake I make, and make the authorized fixes, rather than have a defective product go out to a customer.

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
Gargamel replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
So while removing a part from a CNC machine today, I blow out the inside with the air hose. The part is a hose coupler, 1.6 in inside diameter (40mm?), and the airhose, is maybe 3/8" (~10mm) outside diameter. The inside of the part shaped similar to a trombone bell, long and narrow wit a flaring opening on one end. I am blowing into the flared end. I believe it's the venturi effect that is kicking that is accelerating more air through the part than I am actually blowing into it. It's basically how Dyson fans and hair dryers work. But, at a certain distance from the hose, the part is drawn towards the hose, like a magnet. Is it suction or thrust? If anybody needs a diagram, I have one drawn, but imgur is not loading... so I'll wait. -
I tried the demo back when it was only a one version release behind the alpha. Bought it right after that. But why would anybody want to play the demo after purchasing the full game?

My slightly inebriated mind is coming up with really weird visuals. Something along the lines of an orbital cockroach, but he's wearing aviator goggles.
-
That would be my suggestion. As you build the stages you intended to crash land, the mod will let you know the estimated speeds under a canopy.

Give memhraph a whirl. It changes the gargbage collection so the game pauses less often. Works great for a lot of players: [1.2.x/1.3] MemGraph 1.1.0.3 - with Stutter Reduction - Add-on Releases - Kerbal Space Program Forums or

Lets play KSP, or wel just forget it.
Gargamel replied to PGTART's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Yet again, another complaint that suggests that the devs completely strip the game down to it's bare bones, or even starting anew, and rebuilding it from basically scratch. KSP2 anyone? I'm not knocking on your complaint/comment. You just have to understand the base of the game when it was originally written, it was not created by a full dev team designing a game, it was a dev team that was created around a growing game. They, back in the early days, obviously made some choices they would not make again. And the current dev team is now stuck dealing with these limitations. Some of these fixes, including better loading algorythms, are really not feasibly fixed without just starting over from scratch, and that's a whole other discussion. -
Could you post the log to a outside site, or just post about twenty lines or so of the log here in spoiler tags? Digging through my skull, I can recall device conflicts being an issue for sound, so check your device manager and see if something has become disabled. I mean, without more info to narrow down the issue, we're kinda shooting in the dark. Do you have sound outside of games? So when you loaded up the forums, did you get a notification *ding*?

Which leads me to believe it wasn't a normal worker...

It could be possible, but again, drilling those large holes one those weird angles would be very difficult. And extruding those complex shapes would require a lot of different dies. Bending can easily be done on a a press brake, and a skill tech could knock out a good portion of the bending required for the craft in a day, for a lot less cost than extrusion. It could clog it, but you'd probably still drill first for proper location, and maybe even tap, then paint, and then quickly tap again to clear the threads. But yeah, tapping after painting makes sense, but the hole would be there already. God forbid if the guy who drilled this hole ever laid hands on my taps, they'd all be shattered.
-
Read my earlier posts. After the sheet metal is cut to size, you mark and then drill all your holes. This allows you to get the drill exactly where you want, without having to wrangle a drill into the correct position. Also, I would not be surprised if those holes are punched, not drilled. Either way, they are done before bending. And before painting. The correct holes were there before the paint was applied, the hole in question was done after.

FYP. ;D I for one would not be opposed to a couple more game specific emojis. A kraken one for just being kerbal, and perhaps ones of the various bodies. But this is a technical game, and anything beyond that would have to reflect that aspect. The Navball emojis are there because they make explanations using the NavBall so much easier to write and understand. Anything we add would need to represent some technical value or such that is commonly used in the game/forum, to allow our communication between each other to be improved . Adding emojis just for the sake of it is not a good reason. If I want to get a facepalm or head banging emoji, I'll google it and link it.

Well since it's not solely a KSP issue, check your audio drivers, etc etc. But a KSP.log would let us know if KSP has been able to initialize the sound or not.

Prove me wrong here, but I'm not so sure on this. I have had RCS thrusters blocked by some other item (like a solar panel or large battery) reduce the effectiveness of that thruster. We also had a recent thread were a player had grabbed an asteroid, and was using radial engines to try and pull it, but the engines were close enough that they were pushing against the asteroid. Now, that is not the case here, as I could always see the RCS firing, but it just wasn't doing anything, as it was pushing against another part of the ship. The RCS blocks weren't clipping either, they were just poorly placed.

Aside from bragging rights, there is no prize in a challenge. There's no advantage to cheating in a KSP challenge. KSP is about finding a challenge, either in the game itself as a personal goal you have set, or through the forums like we are talking about, and then completing that challenge. As for the personal goals, if a player considers hacking the orbit, or using quicksaves as not cheating, then that is they way they choose to play. There is no 'cheating' in KSP. As for challenges, there's no reason to worry about them. There's no payout. There's no reward. There's just the self satisfaction of having completed a task as described. If one of the requirements is to not use a quicksave, and if they have used a quicksave, then they have really only cheated themselves. Sure, other's might not make the high score list, but those who have completed the challenge correctly, will at least know they did it, and will then strive to do it better. That is very impressive, but does not make your game play any better or worse than any other player. It all just depends on each person's standards. Personally, I use MJ, probably too much for my own good, and I will QS before attempting anything mission critical. I usually easily complete the task, as I have been playing long enough to get it right the first time (most of the time), but when It goes sideways, I have that backup. It's just I choose to play the game, and everybody makes their own choices.

OK, that's an explanation I can accept, but yeah, severely broke protocol. Ok..... that explains so much.... for so long..... But if you're inspecting a ships hull, you don't drill through it. QA should know that much. For inspections of this type, there are non destructive methods, ie Xray, sonogram, etc.

Like I said, you build to the drawings, to the letter. A space ship is not something you should be building "from memory". They just don't make enough of them for that to even be a thing. If the print is wrong, you get it changed, even if it's just an engineering scribbling the hole onto the drawing, as long as you've gotten approval, or at least a second opinion. As we say in SCUBA, you plan your dive, your dive your plan. You might have the best idea ever for the part of the project you are working on, but your little change but conflict with something in the big picture, you know, like a hole in the pressure hull. This is either individual negligence so gross it should be criminal, or was intentional. If it's not, that means there are serious systematic deficiencies in their manufacturing process. If so, I have serious reservations about using my tax money and risking my countrymen on vehicles that are not properly vetted.
-
This I quite doubt. I've been working in fab for quite a bit now, currently as a machinist. Some of the things I currently make are used in aerospace. But anything I have ever worked on, you follow the print, to the letter. If you have a question, or notice a problem, or see a need for a modification to a drawing, you go get the engineer in charge of the project, or at least the part you're working on. They have to agree to and sign off on the change. They'll make a little note, and a scribble on the drawing for that piece, and they'll go update the master drawing for future use, so they won't have to be bothered by the same question over and over. In all the fab and machine shops I have worked in, this has always been the case. So if they were to add anything or make changes, the changes would have been done in a professional manner, not the rushed sloppiness we see here. And then it would be added to the designs for later builds. This wasn't the first capsule to be made, and it wasn't the last. Any issues that might need on the shop floor changes like this would have surely popped up way before this build, and it would have become part of the intended design. I know smaller shops with less critical products can get away with random changes to their product, but this is a space craft we're talking about. Roscosmos might not have the best reputation, but I'm pretty sure they at least follow standard manufacturing procedures and techniques.
-
No, paint was applied after fabrication. You can see this as the other holes have paint applied to their ID's, while this one does not. Paint is usually the last step after all your fab work is done. You cut, drill, and then bend the pieces, and then you paint. The hole in question was clearly done after the fabrication process was complete. Plus, any one of the technicians working on it during the fab process would have said "Hey, there's an extra hole here!".
-
Why won't this still work for you? Which is odd, because this should never have worked, as MJ won't control a vessel outside of physics range. There is a mod (forgetting the name of it) that allows you to pilot both the payload and the booster stages, through the magic of time loops. It's probably what you want.
