The Heat Death - Is it survivable?
Superfluous J replied to Der Anfang's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Local (galactic cluster scale) gravitation overcomes universal expansion. Granted, eventually the expansion will be so great as to overcome even local gravitation (unless I'm mistaken and expansion is not accelerating like I think it is. I'll admit I've not kept up on the findings/theories over the years) but for all I know, by then the heat death will either already have happened or be so close as to have effectively happened... as in, we'll be long dead, starved out of existence. -

I watched this (Well, 30 seconds of it) only because you wrote that. -
The v1.2 Hype Train Thread - Prerelease is Out
Superfluous J replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Weird. This'll be the first one of these where I wasn't home sick during it. Amusingly, I won't even be home. Oh well- 1,592 replies

That is actually untrue. curse.com without adblock is a bad experience. curseforge.com however is pristine, and has been since KSP started using it. Before, probably.

While it's (relatively) trivial to get them initially set up this way, it is impossible without editing the save (or using Hyperedit or the like) to keep them from wandering slowly from that setup. I suppose you could do little correction burns but... ew.

Firstly, with all that unpleasantness over with, it's nice to be back HYPING. Just thinking about all the things coming in 1.2 has got me back rearin' to go. I know it's not really the place for this, but I hope your father is all right.- 1,592 replies

Huge for this. I don't even have words. You will be missed.

I don't think anybody's ever needed the info. http://www.kerbalmaps.com/ does give that info when you hover, so you could use it to take samples yourself.

Squadcast September 8th: 1.2 Experimentals Unveiled!
Superfluous J replied to AlphaMensae's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Also Kerbal Experience applying immediately. Yet another unneeded mod Though engine upgrades could totally screw up my new contract pack. I'll be very interested in seeing this public Experimental build when it's released.- 51 replies

Transfer window visualization
Superfluous J replied to robogoofers's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Voyager's route was a bit more complex than just "getting to another planet." They had to arrive that that planet at such a time and in such a way that they'd then be propelled to another planet's orbit, to arrive there at the time the other planet would be there as well. And then they had to repeat that a couple times. To just get to another planet, though, you only have to leave your planet at the right time so your ship will end up at the other planet's orbit when the other planet will be there, which happens ... well not once a year but ... well it's complicated because both planets are moving. But each time the planets are a certain angle apart with respect to the Sun. It's always that same angle (ignoring orbital eccentricity). So in short, to go to Duna you can always leave when Duna is ahead of Kerbin in its orbit, and the phase angle is about 45 degrees. It makes Duna easy to get to because we can visualize 45 degrees pretty accurately. -
Did I Find An Easter Egg?
Superfluous J replied to MisterDummy's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Wow. You found the Hell Kraken. I've not seen that in a long time, well before 1.0. But before then, it happened often enough that I got in the habit of hitting F5 before exiting a pod, and almost never used a ladder to get DOWN, only back UP.- 4 replies

Squadcast September 8th: 1.2 Experimentals Unveiled!
Superfluous J replied to AlphaMensae's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Really? Wow that's a big change. So if I'm reading this right in LKO it's going to be pretty easy to lose sight of a ground station, especially as your orbit gets more polar. If I ever have time, I may watch this one. Like in the old days.- 51 replies

The v1.2 Hype Train Thread - Prerelease is Out
Superfluous J replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Discussion
[snip] I'm saying spending hours nitpicking every pixel on a single image of parts that's not even a screenshot from the game itself is not just a colossal waste of time on the forum goers' side of it, but at BEST it'll just cause the artist to give up on Squad's side of things. THAT is what is not a great strategy.- 1,592 replies

I don't usually post here so I'm not sure if this is the right place. It qualifies as a (brief) recounting of a recent mission though. So I'm playing Strategia and my own upcoming contract pack, Parts Unlimited, and I got the strategy to land probes on Mun. Due to my contract pack's weird way of getting parts, I only had a handful of parts unlocked (though I chose each and every one of them, many for this specific mission). Most of my buildings were still the lowest tier including VAB and launchpad, and I was tight on money so I made the barest bones probe I could. I didn't realize just how tight I'd cut the margins until I noticed coming down that I only had a couple dozen m/s more than my surface velocity left in the tank. I white-knuckled the keyboard and nailed the landing, with 3m/s to spare. Whew!

Many, many things. Among them Challenges. Our challenge forum is chock full of great ones, from the pinnacles of the Jool 5 and Grand Tour challenges, to fun little distractions like the One With Everything challenge. They'll keep you busy for quite some time. And if they're "closed" and you can't get a score, who cares? Do them anyway. Also, after you do a few, you can make up your own and present them for others. Personal Goals. I decided, after I'd visited every world in a hodgepodge way over a long career, to systematically hit every single world with a dedicated "Apollo-style" mission. It was great fun, and I designed every mission from scratch to account for (or take advantage of) each world's unique quirks. This kept me busy for months. Another time (Just recently in fact) I started a new career with the Anomaly Surveyor contract pack and visited every Easter Egg in the game - several of which I'd never seen before. That was another great experience. Mod Cocktails. Think up something you'd like to try, and find the mods to try it. Be it planet packs, life support, programming probes with kOS, or whatever you can dream of. Maybe try Kerbal Construction Time paired with Extraplanetary Launchpads, so it's actually quicker to build off-world than at the KSC. I don't know. Try anything! New versions. Every few months (though these days it seems a bit longer) a new version comes out, and that new version usually has SOMETHING new to learn. Previously I had the pleasure of re-learning how to handle the atmosphere, stock ISRU, and even the introductions of both science mode and career. Next update, we'll be getting restrictions on probes that should prove interesting. And who knows what they'll throw our way in 1.3 when it comes out. And that's just the stuff I thought of when I started typing. I'm sure there's more.

Transfer window visualization
Superfluous J replied to robogoofers's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I don't remember a dev saying any such thing. My only memory is HarvesteR hemming and hawing at the idea, concerned that it would ruin the "Magic" of the game. -
This guy was supposed to get a Kerbal to LKO from the surface on the cheap, and then return a Kerbal from orbit to the ground (ahhh, pre-1.0-atmo. I sometimes miss you). In the early stages of building it I misread my dV numbers and overbuilt a tad. So I tried to see how far it would go. IIRC it couldn't land, or even get back to Kerbin, but it did get a flyby

Transfer window visualization
Superfluous J replied to robogoofers's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Great first post there, @robogoofers. I totally agree. A while ago I suggested something similar, a "Mission Planning Node" that works just like a maneuver node, but you put it on planet and moon orbits. You could put one on Kerbin's (or any other world's) orbit in the tracking station (and maybe even in map mode) and it would work just as if that world was a ship. You could drag it out to touch Duna's orbit, drag it around its own orbit of the sun, get your encounter just like you would going to Mun from LKO with maneuver nodes, and then when you get that encounter, a built-in Kerbal-Alarm-Clock type interface would alert you when you were getting close to the transfer window that YOU found, using in-game tools. Maybe some day... -
Shortcut key for "decline contract"
Superfluous J replied to juvilado's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I agree. Or at least have a button somewhere near where you click the contract. Like on the actual contract button, where the red button is when removing Kerbals from pods in the VAB. And no "this will cancel the contract!" popup. I'm a big boy and know what I'm doing. I know this is a suggestion for the stock game but Malah's Quick Mods has Quick Contracts in it, that does just what you're asking for. -
A picture here would be worth a thousand words. At the point you would click "run test," instead hit F1. Go into your \<ksp directory>\screenshots\ folder and find the newest picture. Upload it to imgur.com or somewhere else, and link to it here. I bet within moments of seeing that picture, someone can tell you what you are doing wrong or if the game has a bug.

Aesthetics is a strong second to efficiency. If it's efficient and ugly I'll happily fly it. If it's pretty and inefficient I'll redesign it. Sometimes - rarely - I'll get both. Some other times - sadly less rarely - I'll get neither.

I wouldn't be surprised if the delay was to figure out how to handle tankbutts. It almost looks in that image like they're separate parts.- 1,592 replies

It's as "official" as any other ModuleManager config, in that it's worked for me on an otherwise stock game (but with ModuleManager installed of course).
