I believe it would qualify as an "Add-on Release." I also believe that things like this (i.e., things that aren't mods) are exactly why that forum is called "Add-on Releases" and not "Mod Releases."

How do you have your subscription settings set?
Superfluous J replied to Mad Rocket Scientist's topic in Kerbal Network
I voted "Other" because I have no idea how my subscription settings are set. I don't use the feature. I browse the KSP forums like I do every forum I browse: By the "latest threads since your last visit" page. I have a bookmark to http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=vBForum_Post and that's the only way I ever visit the forum. That page nicely summarizes what has happened since my last visit. Usually I check every thread that I've replied to that I also care about, and on the first page or 2 I read all the titles and see if there's anything new I want to reply to. -
I'm happy to admit this thread is my only source of New Horizon news. Makes sense. Every "year" most of the surface is remade, as the "ice" melts and refreezes. No.

What is the absolutely first game you remember playing?
Superfluous J replied to 11of10's topic in The Lounge
That actually brings up a good idea for a followup question. What's the first game you remember playing that - later in life - you went back to and found was still actually quite fun? For me that would be Adventure on the Atari 2600. About 10 years ago I tried Indenture - which is a faithful rewrite of the game to work on "modern" computers - and found it to be still an enjoyable game. and what do you know? I still had the three mazes memorized. You can play it in a browser here: http://www.myabandonware.com/game/indenture-1my/play I played one game and yeah, it's still fun Basic, but fun. -
Same here, really. Usually a station wants - say - 10 people and I'm sending 3. So I tack a hitchhiker with 3 lander cans somewhere on the ship as dead weight. I RP that the astronauts use it for extra space, and then toss it once I've made my cash.

You guys are doing the station missions wrong. You don't build a solar station and send it up there to do nothing. You take a contract to put a station in orbit of Kerbin, another to put a similar station in orbit of Sun, and a third to put one in orbit of or landed on wherever you're going (let's say Ike). Then you take one station along with whatever you were sending anyway, and you get those contracts automatically just by doing the mission. Then you leave it behind because really it's a huge waste of dV

Orbit or Direct Escape Trajectory?
Superfluous J replied to Mythalinear's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The more I'm thinking about it the more sense this idea makes over the "traditional" (for me) Minmus refueling station. First off, you don't have to deal with going to Minmus and back with your interplanetary ships, just the fuel tug. Second, it more closely breaks the dV expenditure in half (~3300 to orbit and <~3300 to get most anywhere else; as opposed to ~3300 to orbit and ~950 to Minmus and << ~4250 to wherever you're going). I think I'm going to modify my mining operation today. -
What is the absolutely first game you remember playing?
Superfluous J replied to 11of10's topic in The Lounge
Wow, I forgot about this thread. I vaguely recall posting "Pong" on like the first page To elaborate, I played Pong on a dedicated device that was about the size of an Atari 2600. I believe it was on a color TV (but it had a dial!) but of course Pong was black and white (of course). Later in life I had an Atari 2600 on possibly the same TV. My memories of pong are mere wisps, but that 2600 was AMAZING. I think I remember the day we got it, even, and if I'm correct then the 2nd game I remember playing was Combat. -
Sweet I hope all the icons are sprites.

I will admit I totally missed the use of RemoteTech and lack of oxidizer (and I've not used LV-Ns enough in 1.0.x to remember offhand that they no longer use oxidizer). However, if you have the dV to get home doesn't RemoteTech have a "Do this maneuver node when it comes, even though you won't be in communication range at the time" function? And even if it doesn't, this will be a good chance to hone the very important skill of nailing a target on the other side of the system with a single efficient burn. Sounds good. It's very close to what I'd try my own self

[1.3.0] Kerbal Engineer Redux 1.1.3.0 (2017-05-28)
Superfluous J replied to cybutek's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Dang it, you modders always release new versions right when I think of a feature I'd like. Right now, the HUDs' tops are anchored, and if there is more information to display the HUDs extend downward (The most obvious way to see this is with the "dV per stage" readout). Would it be possible to anchor the BOTTOM and allow the HUD to extend UPWARD? That way I could have my dV where it's supposed to* be, right next to the navball, and not have to start it way up above the bottom of the screen. * I speak for everybody with that. We all want it. It's just that nobody else will say it.** ** -
[old thread] Trajectories : atmospheric predictions
Superfluous J replied to Youen's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I've a request for this awesome mod. I don't know what the name would be, but could you add a "body fixed" mode where instead of drawing the orbit, you draw on the planet, where you'd be over it during your orbit? This would aid in plotting orbits with the pinpoint scanner to make sure it's passing directly over a deposit. AKA I suck at figuring out perspective. -
PSA: how to not waste ore when mining asteroids
Superfluous J replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Tutorials
The fact that people don't check the tutorials section when they're having trouble with the game doesn't mean the thread belongs in a different section. -
According to certain definitions, Jupiter hasn't cleared it's orbit. According to the official definition used by the official requirements for a planet to be a planet, they both have. And Pluto has not. Note, I'm not saying I agree. Personally I think Ceres should be a planet. And so should the Moon, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan, and Triton. And maybe a few more satellites. But that's just me.

PSA: how to not waste ore when mining asteroids
Superfluous J replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Tutorials
I did not know this. Hopefully this bug will be fixed in 1.1. What happens if you *would* get poor returns while controlling the ship, if instead you went back to the space center, time warped for a month, and then went back to the ship? Do you still get the poor returns or does the automatic way the drills and converters work skip this? -
What's your dV if you toss that lander and leave it in orbit? What's the dV of the lander if you put all the fuel in it and leave the "transfer stage" behind? You have 3 guys and seating for 8, toss away some of that extra space and you may have the dV you need. Also, you can avoid sending a refueller AND aerobraking by getting close to Kerbin with the ship, and sending up a ship that can rendezvous with it (like an Asteroid rendezvous), dock with the open port that you have by leaving the other half of the Duna ship behind, and then slow it down. Or, just transfer the guys and their science over and bring them home in the more capable vessel.

If you've only got $3500 and 2 contracts taking up both contract slots in Mission Control, the only choice (other than restarting, which is fine really as you seem to be just starting out anyway) is to cancel them, take the hit, and start anew. Note: You won't go under $0 for canceling the contracts, so you'll only lose the $3500. And you can build a $3500 ship and put it on the launch pad, then cancel the contracts, and then recover the vessel to get your money back. So, all you'll lose is a little rep. Then you can take 2 new contracts that will give you some seed money to build a ship that can complete them. You could also just take a few "test this part on the launch pad" type stuff to build up a bankroll so you can tackle harder missions (and get your rep back you lost earlier).

Why would you want to downgrade Pluto from the first discovered [edit: I actually got this wrong. Ceres was discovered far before Pluto], first visited, most prominent Dwarf Planet out there to a tiny, last visited tag-along planet that couldn't hold its own against a lot of moons? Asking this question is like asking, "Now that we know far more about the majestic Elephant, will you kindly reconsider my ages-old petition to consider them as proper Lemurs?" - - - Updated - - - So Earth isn't a planet? And the Sun is? And I assume the Moon is as well.

While I agree with the docking thing, one nice thing about an orbital station is it can easily have less parts than a lander. No landing legs. No SAS. No RCS (except tanks). Heck, you don't even NEED a probe core on it. My first stations are usually 5 or 7 orange tanks, 2 big RCS tanks, and 2 of each docking port. I'm planning on doing similar with the biggest SLS tanks when I unlock them. I also like the station to just be topped off at all times. I fill it when I can't devote a ton of time to playing but have some spare time anyway. If anything, I have MORE of that kind of time than dedicated playing time.

I just want to praise HyperEdit a bit. I had a NaN bugged out space station (that would crash the game if I jumped to it). It was not super complex but deleting it and putting it back would have been a bit of a chore. Based on looking at the vessel in map mode, the problem appeared to be that its orbit was... nonexistent. It was just a point in space with no orbit drawn. So, I loaded up HyperEdit and gave it an orbit. And what do you know, it's back to fully working and accessible in all ways.

I fixed a NaN bugged out space station (that would crash the game if I jumped to it) with HyperEdit. It was shockingly easy. All that was wrong was the orbit data was janky, so I just used HyperEdit's orbit mode, selected the ship in that GUI window (so I never actually was on the ship), and put its orbit back to about where it was before. Bam, no more game crashes and I can use the station again. I <3 HyperEdit. No, I <4 it.

Annoying Warp to here markers
Superfluous J replied to leocrumb's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I want you to know I loaded the game specifically for you. Options -> Specifics -> All Alarm Defaults -> Warp To Alarms -> Enable Warp Buttons (uncheck) -
I slept right through the encounter, on purpose. Boo-yah. Considering it serves exactly the same purpose (To talk about the unknown thing that is going to happen, that has already been analyzed to death and back, to fill time before said unknown thing happens) then I see no reason to expect it to be anything different.

Is KSP's timewarp system flawed?
Superfluous J replied to abowl's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I will now recuse myself from this thread as my goals for the game do not coincide with yours. You appear to think that unintentional and unplanned SOI changes should just be ignored by the game, while I think they are critically important to both realism AND gameplay. And I didn't even bring up other things. What if your SOI changing ship is inside Mun's SOI a the time you jumped to? Or inside Mun? Or you were PLANNING on it intercepting Mun (Or more likely Eve) at some point between these times but just forgot because you have 37 ongoing missions and are trying to play stock for some reason so don't have KAC? But that is not recusing myself.
