  2. Yes, it's Wikipedia so the reliability might be sketchy, but this is an excerpt worth reading. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Launch_System#Upper_stage
  3. Download coming soon! I think I'll make a thread for it, actually.
  4. Copy/Pasted from RSS Launchers MegaThread... Nice work to everything here! So, I'm almost finished updating my Space Launch System Block I. The biggest change (it's a completely new design) is the scale. The previous design was a proportional/scaled down model fit to a 4 meter command pod. This version is 5 meter like the real Orion MPCV, i.e. it's full scale! I've also swapped the RS-25 engines to the ones from dtobi's Space Shuttle Engines pack (with RealEngines config, courtesy of SFJackBauer), since they're pretty much an exact replica of the real RS-25s. As always, I strive to make them as accurate as possible. The core stage is the same size, the boosters are as well, and the upper stage is as close as I can (blueprints that show every dimensions are hard to find, but basic widths and lengths are available on Wikipedia and NASA sites). It's a bit easier to fly, and the way I got the 5 meter command pod is I duplicated the folder for the Mk1-2 pod and changed the rescale factor. I'll show a tutorial on how to get that pod for yourself! I also edited the config for SDHI (Sumghai's Orion look-alike set) to match the new 5 meter scale. That will also have to be edited, but it actually makes sense since this is RSS and it's an Orion look-alike pack, so rescaling them is a good idea. (Maybe I can talk to NathanKell about integrating that into the pack, who knows? ) Anyways, here's the pictures. Download will come up soon, this post will be edited. The RS-25 engines are so efficient that the core stage alone can be brought into orbit! I even drained some fuel to increase the TWR after boosters separation, and it still holds a lot of LH2 and LOX.
  5. Really appreciate your hard work, dtobi! This mod is awesome!
  6. Returning from Duna back in October. I've been playing since 0.18.2 and it's amazing it took that long to send kerbals out there. Although, I didn't have much time to play KSP from May-August. But that was really nice. I mean, I thought I had the trajectory back to Kerbin set up, but because I didn't know time warping through SOI changes botched the values, it changed the trajectory to not skim through the atmosphere but rather miss by a couple million kilometers. I burned normal (or anti-normal, can't remember ) and got the periapsis to 30 km or so. The speeds were very high and it was enjoyable to watch! I was practically sweating from all the suspense, I take my kerbals' lives very seriously. But in the end they made it back. This was in 0.21, of course.

  8. I'll gladly join, but take a look at this. We've started it about 3 weeks ago and it's open to everyone. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/70446-The-Interkerbal-Space-Station!

  10. Slightly offtopic but would those happen to be? I know the RS-25 is one but what are the other two? Just curious, I want to further expand my knowledge of rockets!
  11. They're not comparable! SLS Block I lifts 70 metric tons to orbit, Block II lifts 130 metric tons. It's also designed by NASA (albeit the engines and components are designed by various other companies, as was the case with the Apollo program rockets). SLS Block I (Block II will be more capable, obviously) can also send 20.2 metric tons to Mars and 2.9 metric tons to Europa. Falcon Heavy lifts 53 metric tons... yes, that's quite a big difference. Sure, Falcon Heavy (and SpaceX's other products) is reusable, but reusability in the way SpaceX plans on doing so means that fuel is being used to land those rocket stages that could be used for lifting the payloads. Falcon Heavy doesn't have the power to lift the types of heavy payloads the SLS can. We're going to need to launch some pretty hefty stuff if we're going to Mars. SLS can also send more to Europa, there is a space probe under research (it's not official yet) called the Europa Clipper that is looking to do research on Europa (obviously). So in the end, Falcon Heavy is neat and all, with its reusability, and its low costs are a game changer. A lot of people these days bash on NASA, but think of what they've done. Much of the technology for spaceflight comes from NASA and their heritage. It's been 41 years since Apollo 17 and no one has still beat us in sending astronauts to the Moon. NASA is still the world leader in space exploration (though until 2017 Russia or China will hold that title), and after 2017 they will further cement that position. A private company like SpaceX won't ever surpass NASA. SpaceX and the Falcon Heavy may seem appealing to people at first, but with further research SLS is much more capable. Reliability is not a valid claim as neither of the two have launched yet.
  12. Does the machine accept bills? (just wait, a coin machine will come after this post)
  13. KSP has also changed my life. I mean, I was always interested in science and all and remember the Space Shuttle launches when I was younger, and used to read some books about the solar system, but KSP has taught me how it all works, and has emerged me deeper than ever before into the vast world of science. I've been asking "the big questions" since I starteds playing KSP. About how living things are even, well alive. What science has done for humanity, what reality is (and I'm sure other KSP'ers also think about this stuff as well). I also had somewhat severe anxiety which led me into problems with school and grades, and overall well being. I won't say more than that because I don't feel comfortable doing so, but KSP kept my mind sharp throughout, no matter what I went through (and yes, I'm much healthier now thanks to good doctors and treatment). To become an aerospace engineer and work at NASA is my goal, and hopefully I can reach it! Many thanks to Squad and KSP.
  14. What is the part under the Mk1-2 pod? They look like stretched Oscar-B tanks. Very cool series, keep up the good work!
  15. Going to try and whip up something for this as well! I've tried Eve landers but Tylo should be easier because of the lack of an atmosphere (well, there might be some trace gases if you use your imagination ). It's nice to see people have so much patience with the game, Tylo is quite an unforgiving place.
  16. Not sure, but Kerbal Engineer will list TWR for all of the planets and moons, it's definitely worth checking out! http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/18230-0-23-Kerbal-Engineer-Redux-v0-6-2-3
  17. New episode! With 100% more new microphone (well, it was used on the previous episode as well ) Going to the Mun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hVRTYD7bDQ
  18. Segmented boosters would be really nice, too. But, I'm sure it's been suggested many a times before. With them we could do 4 segment boosters like the Space Shuttle, or try advancing the technology and make 5 segment boosters, like on the SLS. I guess a feature could be made to limit the amount of segments used in career and higher nodes in the tree will allow more segments to be stacked. Just something I thought aboout now.
  19. I almost never use them. There is of course the crowd of "moar boosters" (not trying to criticize), but if you're going to add boosters liquid is the way to go.
  20. Wow, nice job on this! It's always great to see more and more content from the KSP community.
