What are some useful parts you don't use enough?
StrandedonEarth replied to EchoLima's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Aircraft parts. I just don't have the patience to actually fly somewhere, even at high-speed, high-altitude, 4x physics warp. -
Yeah, the Tier 0 "Space Center" needs to be a thing. When inventing a brand new technology, you generally start in a building that wasn't designed for it, hence "The Barn." You can't have a purpose-built building before the purpose has been invented yet. #BringBackTheBarn

You don't actually need to go interplanetary. Orbit Mun, land on Minmus, then venture outside Kerbin's SOI for a minute or two, then return. Presto! Level 3! But yeah, as I said before, I'd rather choose what skill my victims kerbals get when they level up. AFAIC, most of the KSC buildings need to have more content inside.

I don't know if you're on PC or console, but if you are on PC, I (and probably many others here) recommend the mod "Precise Maneuver" or "Precise Node" (two variants of the same mod). It makes it much easier to fiddle with the node and see how the changes affect the trajectory (I hate trying to drag nodes around).

totm dec 2019 Russian Launch and Mission Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to tater's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Maybe they should have verified the tank levels with a dipstick. Er, wait... -
This. So much this. I don’t want Kerbal level ups to be a passive “now you can do this”. I want to choose what The First Four can do next, thanks, even crosstraining them if I want (for an excessive amount of XP, of course). And yeah, construction and research to e needs to be a thing, instead of “Oh look, the window to Moho just opened! I’m now going to build and launch three separate thousand tonne monsters to Moho within that window!” I mean, Kerbal engineers are good, but they’re not miracle workers. I haven’t seen one named “Scotty” or “Montgomery Scott” yet! I’d love to see factories churning out parts to be clicked together in the VAB. I’d put all of those under “”KSC not quite done yetl Yeah, you do that. Hide well lol

How does software "work"?
StrandedonEarth replied to Cheif Operations Director's topic in Science & Spaceflight
True, but it's mind-boggling to comprehend how a modern system does what it does. It's a long, tortuous path from abaci to Babbage's Difference Engine, through ENIAC to a modern smartphone. Although I'd hazard the only real difference between an Apple II from the 80's and a smartphone is size and computing power; the basic architecture of memory, CPU, I/O, network, and storage is basically the same. -
*buys a BEvERage* Can I get my free lunch now? Yeah, it's a roundabout way of converting an energy source to hydrogen, carbon-free (once you have the energy). In this carbon-emission-reduction world. nuclear would be a great energy source, once the reactor plant is built and the fissiles are mined and processed (and how much carbon emissions does that produce anyways?). But the enviropeeps apparently don't want nuclear to be a solution.

Hmmm. There are planetary shields that disintegrate anything that hits them. How about fitting that type of shield onto a torpedo? It should cut through anything... That probably fits into the category of hyperdrive ramming: why didn't they do that before?- 88 replies

Hammer... Nah not big enough. Sledgehammer? Hmmm... nope. Steamroller! No, still not big enough... Ah-ha! (I've seen that beast in person, and climbed all over it...)

Or worse, running out of gas... -
My favorite local station: http://radio.garden/live/chilliwack/the-drive-cwhk-fm/ When I head into the city: http://radio.garden/live/vancouver/cfox/ Their jingle claims to be "World Famous" but when the dj's called around the world they were proven wrong... Those are my favorites in the region, that radiogarden picks up. What it doesn't pick up... Sometimes I can pick up 92.9 KISM out of the Seattle region on the radio, as I drive to work. Another station in the city I like is 96.9 Jack FM, but radiogarden doesn't seem to pick it up. I guess they only stream on the Radio Player Canada app. As you can tell, I tend towards rock, preferably classic. But some of the new stuff is okay too, until CFOX overplays it.

Ask the Mods questions about the Forums!

Likewise, I just thought reaction images had been overlooked and unreported. I promise to try not to abuse them. As for keeping them from getting out of hand, can the forum software impose a hard cap on the size of images? I've gotten in the habit of resizing images I post to 500 by XXX, to keep the thread length from exploding. Now that's just awesomely hilarious! -

This article was posted recently in this thread or another detailing Arianespace’s logic. It basically boiled down to “jobs program.” But at least it’s not SLS

How does software "work"?
StrandedonEarth replied to Cheif Operations Director's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Not completely arbitrary. We have ten digits on our hands, so using base ten makes sense. Sure, we could have used base5 or base20, but 10 is a good balance between information density and brain capacity/memory In the world of The Simpsons the logical thing to use would be base eight, which would also be a natural for octopi -
He’s a celebrity to you and your family, and that’s what matters. I’m sorry to hear about your loss. I haven’t commented in your thread because others are doing an admirable job of saying all the right things. Myself, I can’t imagine what you’re going through as I’m 48 and still have my parents. My wife, however, lost both parents before she was 25. It may not seem like it now, but time will lessen the ache.

totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Hey, I actually got to watch most of this launch for once. Well. the booster's portion of the mission, anyways. But while watching that Mvac burning, I realized where a lot of confusion over the emmissives on the KSP engine revamps was coming from. The Mvac doesn't glow at all above that ring near the throat. I assume it's for cooling the throat area. So depending on what engine is being modeled, having the bell look hotter than the throat makes sense, especially considering how the nozzle gets thinner in the areas farther away from the apparent heat sink.
