Has anyone tested my planes?   XF-4 CRAS-2 & F-2C Sea Predator

Well, isn't it @inigma's responsibility?

You know what? I'd also like my plane tested. However, I want no AMRAAMs in my round- I just started developing it, and haven't developed countermeasures for AMRAAMs. Plus, this is my first time comparing fighters with everyone else in this community, so I want to find my niche in this challenge before actually challenging the king of the hill. So just use AIM-9s as missiles.

Lemme find out how to get a DL link to my craft.

As far as I can tell BD Armory isnt on Curse anymore because it doesn't come up when searched.

@BahamutoD's got BDArmory on Spacedock now.

Also @inigma, I've decided that despite the advantages of having a laser-armed craft, I'm going to be swapping my fighter (the Talon MKII-B) for this:

The ATS-FX7 Gemini. It's based off both the Russian SU-37 and American F-15 ACTIVE prototypes, and is also faster, lighter, and more maneuverable than the Talon MKII-B.

It also features my custom cockpit design with a fully-functional ejector seat, meaning that in case of the craft being damaged/destroyed, the pilot has the chance to survive relatively unscathed.

Download link for the Gemini (instructions are in the craft description): https://www.dropbox.com/s/57hx8yvrzo8xk0f/ATS-FX7%20Gemini%20%28BDA%29.craft?dl=0

Part of the reason for this swap is that the Gemini performs far better in combat trials against the Fighter Papas AND X-38Fs, though victory often comes down to luck for either side and/or gun kills, which the X-38s have an inherent advantage in due to their GAU-8 30mm cannons.

Hello!

Total newbie to BD Armoury but longtime KSP addict. Here is a design I'd like to challenge you with, the CF-83 "Vanquish" fighter.

I could do up a badge for you if you like. I'll try doing it tomorrow. Any requirements or ideas for it?

Love this thread btw. Working on a plane to take everyone down.

Happy Flying

YargJay9991

Badge just needs to say ASC Champion, have some modern US Airforce style wings, blue and black and silver to the logo colors :) A separate larger logo without Champion on it for the OP too. :) if you're up to it, thanks!

I've found putting two hidden Vulcans is better than a single GAU-8, in my previous gunfights with @Triop

I would've done that on the Gemini, but unfortunately it was already getting near the edge of where I felt comfortable letting it go in terms of mass. After all, what use is a gun if you can't outfly incoming missiles?

I have reading the thread I'm going to start to design my fighter right now!

Also @inigma maybe I can help you recording the videos but I will need instructions about how do you want  them exactly because you are quite good with Camera Tools :)

Just stand up a dedicated KSP 1.0.5 install with only these mods:

  • BahamutoD's Adjustable Landing Gear
  • BahamutoD's BDArmory
  • BahamutoD's BDAVesselSwitcher
  • BahamutoD's CameraTools
  • BDynamics Mk22 Cockpits
  • BahamutoD's DestructionEffects
  • BahamutoD's Vessel Mover
  • HyperEdit
  • InFlightFlagSwitcher
  • QuickBrake

I use OBS to stream to Twitch my takes, and then of those takes I tell Twitch to export whole vids or highlights to my YouTube channel.

Bahamuto has a thread on Camera Tools here:

All you need to do is just switch it to Dogfight Mode, and make sure the option is checked to enable BDA AI Vessel Target.  Then all you have to do is hit home to active the camera.  Switch vessels using the ] and [ keys.

I just need a backup host designated to run matches in case I don't respond within 7 days with a newly recorded match.  Go ahead and run a test match anyways and get it published. Let's see how it works for you, and we might even consider a rotation to keep from burnout. Hit me up over PM so we can discuss match hosting privately and work something out. :)

Exactly what I was thinking. Does that still count towards a loss? Because personally, my fighters sometimes break up as a result of aerodynamic failure, due to the fact that a low framerate seems to exacerbate KSP's physics. When I run less laggy 1v1 matches, my fighter never experiences aerodynamic failure.

@inigma Welp, I've updated my fighter again in response to some 2v2 island testing versus the new champions. There are only two small changes to the flight AI's settings

Funny thing happened while testing the new champions: They decided to engage in a passionate lovemaking session while taking off...

Aerodynamic break ups aren't counted as bugs, if that's what you mean.  So yes they are counted as legitimate losses of aircraft. My cpu is pretty on par though, however I have seen occasions where my Papa-1 fired a missile into itself. Funny.

Smacking into the ground at high speed if you set your AI alt too low is also a legitimate loss of aircraft.

If i record my tourney battle will it count?

No. But it will make for fun entertainment and give your fellow competitors an edge into your AI's thinking. :)

But seriously. Did they survive that? Because this is one of the best manoeuvres I've ever seen. Not that it has any place in a dogfight.

Well they ended up like that because due to a slight misalignment on my part, the wing "tips" of the two touched, and after some "maneuvering", they "flipped on top" of each other :D.

....if I recall correctly, some parts of the tail plane of the two fell off, but were otherwise largely undamaged. They actually ended up like that much earlier in the match, but the problem was that I was running 6-7 FPS, and I was a (bit) constrained on time to test, so I cut off that match early. So I don't know whether they would have survived that all the way to the start of the match unfortunately.

Ah, I see you've looked into my fighter. There is a very good reason I set my AI to fly that low , and in the seven matches I ran with that minimum altitude setting, none of those times did my planes crash into the ground, even with the elevated minimum altitude of Airbase island.

Why not have dual GAU-8's?

Holy... moly... just tested Redshift OTF's Stealth Weasel against Guggy's X-38F in a 2v2 pre-game matchup test and the game bugged the cannons (I think) since no side fired canon shots, and after knocking out one x-38F with a Aim 120, the Weasels acted like they were sick and tired of not winning fast enough that one of simply flew straight in on purpose to sacrifice itself to collide head-on with the remaining x-38 to win the round for the surviving weasel.  Wicked. reminds me of that scene in DS9 and the dominion ship smacking into the USS Galaxy just 'cause it wanted its side to win. Too bad I didn't record it. I'll have to run a few more rounds to make sure nothing will bug out before I record the match, but .... eesh. I'm glad my Papa-1s didn't have to face the Weasels. :P

The Vulcan is  lighter then the GAU-8, @drtricky

Ah, a weight issue. I keep forgetting that my aircraft, which weighs 46 tons empty, could mount 10 of them and give only the slightest f*ck :D

^The dark smoke FX in the above pic is the first Weasel taking an AIM-120 (or two, it was far out) to the fuselage, resulting in total annihilation.

I lost this test bout though, due to the surviving Weasel spraying gunfire WHILE launching AMRAAMs, forcing my plane to try and dodge the gunfire- all the better to get ganked by a missile. Immediately afterwards, the other Gemini got gunned down attempting to provide backup.

I've started to find some solace in having ejection seats- even if the cockpit takes enough damage to rip the seat out, the pilot often survives, alongside the all-important parachute.

The survival rate is higher from getting downed by guns rather than missile hits though.

Well some things matter more then overwhelming armament.. @drtricky

...and in the second round the remaining X-38F got smart and just let the Weasels chase him in a spiraling scissors until the Weasels crashed into... um... each other. Spectacularly.
