Anyone watching the Oscars tonight?

I'm an unabashed movie buff, so I'll be watching. I've done my best to watch as many of the nominated films since they were announced in late January. I liked some, didn't think much of others and hated one or two.

So what nominees are people rooting for? Predictions? And what about snubs?

Myself, none of the Best Picture nominees that I saw did much for me, but both "Mudbound" and "The Florida Project" stayed in my thoughts in the days after I saw them. I wish they'd have gotten more recognition.

No.... I'm sorry, but in my opinion those award shows are just about the most narcissistic thing imaginable.

Five minutes in and all I'm seeing in my head is this:

I can't imagine watching movie people patting themselves on the back, and vociferously signalling their virtue at this point in my life. I saw part of an Oscars once...  with my GF who was a dance major with her theater people friends. Entertaining lot (go figure), until they tried to talk about anything serious, then the difference between them and my usual crowd of physics geeks was pretty profound (as such a geek, I was stoked to have a dancer for a GF, though, lol, reasonable trade).

I will join the users majority here. I love cinema for sure, otherwise having completed four years of studies in cinematography and six short films would have been meaningless. To me the problems is not so much the "types" and categories of high-budgeted realizations selected,  but simply the way it is working. This kind of corrupted nomination and selection is annoying... and it's far from being an Academy Award exception. Nearly all, if not all, of the others festivals and awards giving fiestas are just smelling as bad (and it's not an exception of the seventh art, alas). I remember having showed three realizations at four different local, small, and medium festivals. None of them were selected for the "grand finale", what I considered was normal (really) when I looked at the others work. Alas, every single time the 1st price selection was miserable at the most; the one knowing closely the local representatives, or the nephews and nieces of the organizers (or critics) were nominated immediately.

But, hey, this is the artistic universe. If you are not good enough at licking the shoes, or not close to a top head you simply can't survive in this world.

Wrong crowd, obviously...

Sure, some properly cringe inducingly bad films have won awards over the years (**cough** Gravity **cough**), but there are good films that get recognized too. Often you'll find them down in the more obscure categories. That's what I enjoy about the Oscars - they inevitably draw my attention to good films that I otherwise would have missed.
