Real Life "Kerbalisms"

Firearms (and FPS) enthusiasts may have heard about the Nikonov AN-94, an attempted Kalashnikov replacement that used a ridiculously complex layout with the barrel recoiling independently from the gun in order to squirt an incredibly quick two-shot burst, while having a sane rate of fire in full-auto.

AN-94 was developed in response to the Abakan (The Program to Develop a 50% More Accurate Assault Rifle than the AK-74) requirement, as were several other weapons with the same feature.

Now, back when AK-74 was adopted, the Soviets did hold a (rather hopeless) trial for its competitors. Among them was a Konstantinov rifle featuring a counterweight-based recoil dampening system. Garev and Koksharov resurrected it for the Abakan trial as the AEK-971.

Now, their recoil dampening system was designed for full-auto fire. Nevertheless, they emulated the trendy two-shot burst feature... by changing the three-shot burst mode to a two-shot burst, and ramping up the cyclic fire rate to 1500 RPM. A minigun-like RoF in an assault rifle with a 30-round magazine. I think they changed everything back by the end of the trials, but how the heck did the gun survive that?

As it has a limited, fixed,  and known amount of shots per burst, it should survive a greater stress than when it has to survive an up to 30 shots burst, so isn't it usual?

Say, G11 had 600 RPM infinite / 2000 RPM fixed.

Also this make the second bullet leave the barrel before the barrel could move significantly from the aimed direction, so raises the shot grouping.

By drinking lots of beer before shooting? :sticktongue:

Japanese official rebut Russian claims that a Russian vagabond has made his way from Kunashir to Hokkaido to claim asylum by swimming 24 km.

What, does Japan have some sort of special visa for individuals with the "BadS" trait that they want to avoid granting? :sticktongue:

To be clear, there's absolutely nothing to justify a political asylum request. His lifestyle had previously got him deported from Japan in 2011.

If you go down the link to his 2019 profile, he states he deliberately claimed his hectare so that he'd be provided a security pass for the Kurils. That's downright premeditation.

He just wants to go to Australia.

Obviously a BadS.

OK, turns out his wetsuit has been found...

...and the Japanese authorities were not impressed by his asylum pitch, and have arrested him.

Mobile Nuclear Plant, 1950. Of course, from Russia. :)

On the post-war, Russia was in desperate need of providing electricity to the Country, and this is the solution they cooked up. What could possibly go wrong? ;)

Not a russian privilege, by the way. US Army also toyed with the idea:

Careful with your mirth. The various portable reactor projects are enjoying a renaissance with the newfound focus on the Arctic. Rosatom has funding for R&D of 400 kW land-based and 10 MW unmammed underwater reactors, as well as a live contract for a 55 MW powerplant (using icebreaker reactors, it seems).

Meanwhile, the US wants to bring reactors into warzones... given the coherence of their recent exit strategies... uhm.

No air for actual flight, but I suppose one could try to fly a VTOL through the Tylo cave. And it’s always fun to rocket through a Mun Arch. Oh wait, isn’t there a catwalk at the KSC R&D complex to fly under?

Now that than was insane, probably less dangerous than it looked, but why have stuff in the tunnel in case he had to abort, but assume it was just props.

Don't think the cave is straight enough to orbit trough, you will also be moving at around 2 km/s so good luck. Still people has done impossible stuff in KSP many time like reaching escape velocity on the ground or made Eve SSTO or docking with something on an suborbital trajectory on Eve. So let us give Tylo some love. I can land on it with mechjeb and lots of retries and tweaks.

Now for the complexity, don't thing it beat the G11 even if not seen the AN-95 internals as the G11 was ridiculous.
And you generally don't want that fast full auto rate of fire unless you move very fast or trying to hit an fast target as in trying to hit planes or in an plane against an ground target.
Most bullets in an war is used just to have the enemy hug the ground to avoid them. You can now use an flanking force, or stuff like artillery or air power to kill them and you don't need an very high rate of fire to do this.
Now an very high rate of fire is nice in some cases like an ambush on an large enemy force, but this adds a lots of complexity and only relevant for something belt feed as you will be out of ammo so fast.
On many machine guns you can swap barrels, for normal guns the issue is how many times you shoot over time not the rate of fire.
Modern artillery with auto loaders and good fire control can drop multiple shells at once on an target by aiming some high and other low. This rate of fire is not sustainable as it will damage the barrel because of overheating.

We're basically talking about two different things: a high RoF for "personal" use and a high RoF for tactical use. The idea was to ensure a tight grouping of an individual's shots, but not necessarily to generate more shots over time (althought I have seen graphics of a G-11-derived SAW).

IIRC at least one SPIW gun used two bullets per cartridge to attempt the same.
