Just thoughts.

Spoiler

The first scene.

The Miranda planet, the Hoban "Wash"'s tomb.
Suddenly the monument starts shaking and falls, and a greenish-gray alien hand sticks from underground into the air and morphs into a human one.
A minute later naked Alan Tudyk stands nearby, adjusting the face muscles to the human mimics...

Now he has to find an emergency beacon to call Firefly back to the planet and take him.

Meanwhile on Firefly.
After releasing The PsychoGirl, The Doctor Bro, and The Secret Old Guy on some planet (and into other series), the rest of the crew (The Captain, The Amazon, The Companion Girl, The TechnoGirl, and The Good Bad Guy) is deciding what to do next.

Currently irl The TechnoGirl is a gorgeous mature woman and hardly can be a local Gadget Hackwrench (well, she can, but only for the adult fans of the series).
Currently The Good Bad Guy is fifty-nine, so he would be more a sheriff than a cowboy.
So, these two decide to leave the crew, and we don't see them in the series.

So, there are three onboard: The Captain, The Amazon, and The Companion Girl.
All three still look more or less same as twenty years old.

As it's looking too mismatching the modern trends, The Companion Girl decides to stop being a companion girl, and become a Visitors-, Deadpool- and Gotham-style... hmm...  Special Girl.
Also they lack a pilot, while she can pilot her shuttle. So, she becomes a temporary pilot.

They decide to start jackalizing the ship debris around Miranda (let's remember the very first episodes of the series), receive the Tudyc's signal and take him onboard.

As The Resident Alien hardly now can be that wife's manipulatable guy from Firefly (since now everyone could see what a monster he actually is inside, and wouldn't believe), he becomes the new Good Bad Guy with extraterrestrial background.

Roland Emerich just...REALLY likes blowing things up doesn't He?

Is that a Falcon 9 and a Shuttle in the same movie? Guy really, really liked Armageddon.

Firefly Reboot Moving Forward With A Key Piece Missing

The guy got cancelled years ago and only recently crawled out of the shadows in various supporting roles, and then this.

Granted, I know people who think Whedon has had a very negative impact on the wider industry because his style of banter is getting mindlessly and poorly emulated by the entire generation of media creators.

In spite of his faults, Joss Whedon's style made Firefly what it was. (And Buffy. And The Avengers. And, and, and...)

And, none of the original cast is involved. (Which is fair, since they are all 20 years older, and Ron Glass has passed on. But, still, that chemistry also defined the series.)

And, the remake is parked at Disney, who have a history of not understanding what made legendary properties legendary.

And, the zeitgeist of today is seriously stacked against some of the fundamental premises of the original show. (As my wife put it, "So, what, it's going to be the heroic Operative traveling through the 'Verse hunting down the evil Browncoats now?")

So, in toto, I don't hold out a lot of hope for a Firefly reboot to capture the magic of the original. Certainly not enough to shell out $8 a month for Disney+.

Not to mention that they already have their space western (Mando) and are now rolling out SW content at a ridiculous pace.

They certainly seem to have adopted a, "Throw it all against the wall and see what sticks," approach when it comes to their flagship properties.

its amazing how many fields in which this is a useful technique.

Just to be sure...

Is it the last sci-fi movie in the human history?

Because what else can be added to this wiki of cataclysms?

we still haven't done proton decay.

Finch (2021)

For me, it's a depressive Bradburian distopy about the aged man, the robot made by him, and the dog made by unshown dogs. Lacking action, but full of dialogs.

Never liked Bradbury.

But I did enjoy it.   Dark and interesting.   Had it been somebody other than hanks, I dunno.   Its not a blockbuster, but I think it’s worthy of a watch.

seems like movies drop seemingly random now. and usually before i hear about them.

i recently discovered that they fixed the equipment failure at the local theater and dune is now on the list, in 3 weeks. makes me somewhat regret jumping the gun and watching it on streaming. but its not like i don't know what was going to happen. ive read the book, twice, listened to the audio book, and watched every conceivable permutation of lynch dune (this movie has an absurdly large number of cuts and fan edits) and the miniseries and i was able to casually predict the next line of dialog in at least 9 places.

Dune was decent.

There were elements of the first Dune movie that were really good, and this one had a lot that was good. The music was way, way too loud. A few places with some dialog that was a little bit expository were really hard to hear.

I find that to be a common problem with TV and especially movies these days. Turn it up to hear the dialog and get blasted when music and explosions kick in

I wonder if Hans Zimmer personally has had a significant role. Way too many films guilty of that seem to either have his OSTs or emulations of his OSTs.

Don't BRRRR! me

the music takes up too much of the audio bandwidth, and they compressed the hell out of it to the point where it kind of sounds flat and loud. its the same problem with almost all popular music today. did they autotune the choir? it could have been great but i think they took too many shortcuts in the mixing. its too digital and it doesnt fit in a universe that has banned computers. of course i haven't seen it in the theatre yet so it may sound better than the stream.  i mean its a small nitpick of a great film.

the other problem is rebecca ferguson. she just doesn't know how to speak up! its like shes trying to whisper over a cacophony.

Depends on the translation studio, and on the online casino which sponsored them *).

Just watch in Russian. In Russian she's norm.

*) Just joking. Not all of them.

I got around to watching Marvel's The Eternals.

This is one of the few MCU films I didn't go out to see the day-of, mainly because I ended up being busy and didn't plan ahead. The early critic reviews didn't help incentivise me to change plans to watch it.

Ultimately I thought it was ok, and do think it was "review tanked" by some people due to some aspects, because there is no way in hell the Eternal's is worse than Thor 2.

I think the film's biggest problem is the weight of the premise. It's hard enough to sell a movie about what is essentially a superhero-film, love-story spanning thousands of years, with multiple types of space aliens, with 10 different super powered people (and 1 future super powered person). You have to go about explaining the complex lore and world building connecting all of those things together, while also selling the love story and giving your 10 super powered people enough room to breath. It was just too much.

It brought me back thinking of the Guardians of the Galaxy, which was also a risk, but it required vastly simpler world building, and less characters to flesh out. It's roughly triple that scope without the retro-soundtrack, or Groot.

The movie did have a heart, its shooting style was evident in some scenes, and Kumail Nanjiani is hilarious so I found it interesting to watch, but it was a lot to take in as a whole.

I'd say the movie is around the first Thor, and Iron Man 3 in terms of "goodness". Which is where I'd watch it again in the future, but I wouldn't look forward to it too much.

On the flip, I can watch Shang-Chi as much as I want now, for the bus scene alone haha

Shame it's ending before the other 3 books are done (sadly haven't read them yet :/ ) but I can't wait to see what happens!

Spoiler

As much as I'm starting to get annoyed by endless marvel movies and shows, I must admit that this looks pretty cool :D

I know it's already being discussed on the movies megathread, but I wanted to devote a thread specifically for the Buzz Lightyear movie. It may not be popular for long, but at least we'll get our thoughts out while it still is.

This thread is to discuss our thoughts/questions/concerns about the upcoming Buzz Lightyear movie. And when it's officially released, we can tell each other how we felt about it without having to dig through any movie megathreads. Let me start us off.

-----

I thought Disney was done with Buzz Lightyear, but apparently I was wrong. Not only that, this movie will be centered around Buzz Lightyear the character rather than just the toy. I bet it will be interesting to know how Buzz Lightyear became the famous space ranger we all know and love. What I'm really hoping for, however, are connections to the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series. His story just won't make sense to an "old guy" like me - as in a kid or older in the early 2000s - if I'm left with a lot of questions like "Why wasn't Buzz partnered up with Warp?" or "Hey, Tangea wasn't destroyed."

Well after seeing the teaser for "Lightyear", I have to say this and this is for the upcoming KSP 2 that is also coming out (Hoepfully) in 2022. But do you know what we need? Buzz's test ship in the trailer as a model to be put into KSP2. No joke.. Complete with "Warp / Hype-rspeed" Technologies (Crystolic Fusion anyone?)  included. Anyone want to build something like that for KSP 1 as well. Cause I know a certain "LGM" by the name of Jedediah Kerman who wants to try that ship out! I mean I'd love to see what we as engineeres (the LGM's as it were), could come up with in order to make a faster than light ship.. After all we do have the mod technologies so why not make it happen? Seems only fair enoough to go to Infinity.. and Beyond! (I just had to say that).

It look's HORRIFYING because it's so true...

I'm afraid this stinks. The all-star cast - expensive all-star cast - trips my tingly feeling. If you want to satirize vapid celebrity culture, don't do it with faces already associated with the red carpet. It's almost as if they were looking to hire as many famous faces as possible as some sort of perverted Hollywood welfare project.

Worse still, if they're trying to satirize pop culture icon reactions to the pandemic, or - Jeb forbid - climate change, they're really barking up the wrong tree. The problem would be misguided holier-than-thou reactions and narcissistic profittering (and the occasional contrarian), not an Idiocracy-style wall of apathy.

It just so happens that those who thrive on attention won't let an opportunity for attention pass. You need to more or less accurately depict the object of your satire, otherwise it's not a direct hit but a flyby.

After careful consideration, I decided not to include Internet Historian's video. Look up celebrity cringe on your own.
