So, we had another kind of technical problem. Whole different one this time, to keep things exciting!

And after you logged in?

I tried to load the main page on Private/Incognito mode in three browsers:

  • Safari
  • Firefox
  • Chrome

The Default theme is screwed on all of them.

On the other hand, if I choose a different theme on Firefox, when I login on Safari or Chrome, the selected theme is already there.

Follows the list of missing files (as reported by Firefox in Private mode):

If by any reason you can access these files from your computer, then the files are there and the problem may be on some permission or perhaps NGINX configuration and you would be accessing a secondary channel that is unaffected by the problem?

Sorry, I didn't get a notification for some reason.

No I have to manually change themes.

Scratch that. I logged out, shut down and then came back. initially bad page, but once I logged in it went to the dark theme.

@Anth

I don't store cookies, so the initial visit is still deconstructed, I have to find and change the theme still.

The same here. The workaround works.

But for new visitors it's a problem, because they see the unformatted page, which is useless. I could only find the solution, because I knew, that this thread exists, and if there is a solution, it will stay here, and I found a way to navigate to here.

I had the same problem, found the dark theme button by scrolling after reading this thread. The solution is working for me too, so far. Forum's not been loading right for me for the last few days.

its been broken all day <at least since 0630 saturday>. Honestly, given that our forum is likely ending its availability in 33 days <6 months from when it was announced the forum license was renewed for 6 months, and that was now 5 months ago in 5 days> and has been experiencing bad gateways, 2 periods of total systems failure, and a marked lack of ANY communication either from what ever entity holds our license now or the current IP holders for KSP and KSP2, the fact that this glitch is happening is not at all unexpected or surprising. To me <my OWN opinion and position given current known verifiable facts> this is just a symptom of KSP being put out to pasture. It feels as if, welp we are letting the forum go, why bother fixing it, maintaining or saying anything to contradict this. Again, my opinion only, and the one I will hold until proven incorrect. As I said elsewhere, I would rather be wrong and see the forum survive than be thinking it will survive only to be proven wrong. The "work around" of changing themes is a bandage, no more, no less. Not a solution. Am I salty? Yup. Pessimistic? You bet. Do I want to be wrong? Yes. Am I? I honestly doubt it. Sadly, the world has shown me hope no longer has a seat at the table, a voice in the conversation. Am I being a downer? Yea, sorry. 004402232025

Well that's good at least.

@Anth
We are ok because we saw this.

For the patient we can find out how.

As you can still see threads, though it takes more effort.

I suggest a new thread put as high up the page as possible so that is found first, with a title.

Bad forum format solution.

To give people just arriving the best chance.

As far as I know 404 error means the files aren't on the server. If that's true then its not about permissions.

I have no idea how to do that, I am not even sure that is possible.

Had to switch to desktop.

@Vanamonde has the ability to add new threads to the Announcment part of the forum. I assume other moderators do too.

Add a new announcment with a title that clearly points to the current solution. It will be the first topic seen when you scroll down the unformatted page.

Lock this and other announcments to minimise the chance of it being pushed off the start page.

Someone hitting the unformatted page, if they bother scrolling will see the announcment and more easily find the current workaround.

As a temporary fix, I have set a different theme as the default for new visitors. That should fix it for everyone except those who deliberately switch to the old default theme.

Just logged out and it went to a properly formatted white with blue default. Thought you might want to know.

Yep Deddly changed the default theme to one that is working.

that he did, and aside from the (Dev) in the name, its basically the default, which is nicer to look at rather than the reds of the various dark themes. 035602232025

Thank you Deddly!  In practical terms that appears to be all that's needed.

I share your anxieties, but am trying to focus on the positive.  The forum is up and running today, and we have the security of a backup of the wealth of knowledge within thanks to Lisias (if not yet a way of efficiently searching that, but that will no doubt come if it becomes necessary).  What does seem bleak is the idea that we may lose that spark of belonging that we get from interaction with like minded people.  Again, perhaps that is something that can be solved should the need arise.

It's certain we'll never fully recreate what we have here should it go, but I'm not going to morn a death that hasn't happened.
