The Sky is Not the Limit - UPDATE: NEW THREAD OUT!
Kimera Industries replied to TwoCalories's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
It's probably gonna be a compact little lander (gonna see how far I can stretch the Dv), so I can design it to circularize on its own with its propulsion. I know @Kerbalsaurus's entry is destined for The Mun, but mine can head to Minmus I hope? How does a super tiny sample-return mission sound? Basically just do some science and then return it with a micro rocket containing a heat shield/ parachute.- 217 replies

The Sky is Not the Limit - UPDATE: NEW THREAD OUT!
Kimera Industries replied to TwoCalories's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
I'll work something out. Simple probe from the startup company Kimera Industries, putting them on the path to greater success and recognition. The requirements say it must be capable of insertion into Mun/Minmus orbit, does that mean you'll put it on a flyby and it gets into orbit itself? Or that it must do the burn for a flyby all the way from LKO?- 217 replies

The Sky is Not the Limit - UPDATE: NEW THREAD OUT!
Kimera Industries replied to TwoCalories's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Just read through it and a few quick words about the rocket accidents: (Having worked on WoRM I've learned these things) Since Russia launches basically in the middle of a wasteland, none of their rockets have had flight termination systems. If something goes wrong, the rocket crashes into the desert and no one is hurt. (Well, in theory) Russia (and China) are a bit more lax about safety regulations, so there's not much concern about what happens if a rocket crashes into a populated area. In China's case, this happens often since the downrange of their launch site is populated. Still a great story, and it doesn't really matter anyway since this is an alternate history in an alternate solar system, but it's interesting to remember that different countries can have vastly different design philosophies which hugely affect how they look at things, and neither one is really wrong because their ideas work for them. Edit: Still need craft submissions? I know you said there was a last call and stuff but it looks like just that one so far...- 217 replies

Beyond: Kerbalkind's History of Space Exploration
Kimera Industries replied to Kerbalsaurus's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
"Hmm, how to land a heavy booster without a complex landing maneuver?" *At the same time* "Sir, we have several hundred parachutes we have to use on the next mission before their warranty expires!" Cool-looking rocket and awesome space station. -
Is Something Wrong with Dres' Rings?
Kimera Industries replied to Kimera Industries's topic in KSP2 Discussion
Yeah, it was probably a little rushed, but I doubt it's very high on the list for the devs. Perhaps interstellar travel will make it more of a priority for them because lots of planets seemed to have rings in the trailers. -
So I noticed that a vehicle that orbits perfectly in the rings of Dres still sees all those rocks and clouds of dust zooming by like the rings are stationary in relation to Dres. However, if you were orbiting with the rings, they would appear stationary to you because you are orbiting with them, right? Is this intentional or a simple oversight? Is it just not fixed because it would be too hard? Am I wrong entirely? (Also it would be nice if Jool had a ring of dust or something)

Really Really Really Tall Building

Floor 4508: You got past the floor below by pointing to x and saying "Here it is! I found x!" This current floor wants you to find y, and you use the same technique. -
I did just remember that KSP has fireworks. But to be honest, rockets are more exciting than fireworks. But to be slightly more honest, rockets are just big fireworks. So to be really and truly honest, or just a little annoying, KSP has had fireworks from the beginning.

The Everyday Kerbal's Rocketry Vending Machine
Kimera Industries replied to Kimera Industries's topic in KSP Fan Works
Fun idea! The fact that these make soda explode and Pol is based on Io, the most volcanic body in the solar system, fits well together. Added! -

Floor 4501: The kittens have followed you upstairs and have entered a mock battle that turns out to be exactly the Battle of Gettysburg in cat-scale. A tuxedo cat with a black tuft of fur on his chin and a top hat is sitting on a podium, saying: "Meow-score and seven meows ago..." -

Ah, yet another story to confuse culinary historians on the origin of donuts. Love it! Added. -

Floor 4499: A supply depot of oxygen masks and air tanks. A small sign reads: "Turns out you are 2625 stories above the Death Zone. Congratulations on surviving so long! You either have very large lungs, have this equipment already, or don't need to breathe. Just in case, here's some air!" -

Really Really Really Tall Building

Floor 4494: A single sign reading: "Fifty floors below us is floor 4444. Nice." (Edit: Just did some fun math. Assuming each floor is the standard 14 feet, after 23,434 posts this building will reach the Karman line and officially be in space. A good foundation for a space elevator!) (Just did more math. In order for this building to actually be a space elevator, (at a geostationary orbit) it will need 8,386,295 posts.) -

Excellent idea! It's added! -
You know, kerbals with human skin tones actually look a lot better than it sounds. Keep up the good work!

Banned for not feeding my cats.

Er, as far as I can tell, T.V.A means Tennessee Valley Authority, correct me if I'm wrong. The SLS with its 100% success rate launches a bomb directly into the T.V.A.'s main facility. @TwoCalories wins! Rock-paper-scissors-shoot, anything you wanna do!

None of Elon or SpaceX's designs have been single-stage-to-orbit, as far as I know. There's an excellent Everyday Astronaut video about the extreme disadvantages of SSTOs, and I highly recommend you give it a watch. In the video, he explains why a two-stage setup like Starship is better for reusability and practicality. Elon has commented that a Falcon 9 first stage could in theory get into orbit, but as Tim points out in the video, it would have absolutely zero payload capacity. As soon as you want a large payload, you need to scale everything up by an enormous amount. Now, don't say "But in KSP-" because in KSP the solar system is 1/10 the size of ours and everything is stupidly easier as a result. Not that I'm complaining, but that's just why the "but it works in KSP" argument doesn't work unless you have RSS and RO, and even then, KSP is an optimized model of how spaceflight should work. It works as a game, but not as a practical simulator for reality. Did anyone else see the IRL launch, though? The hot staging was beautiful! And now that they've proven that the FTS works, another flight is probably going to come much faster. Looking forward to IFT 3!

Banned for causing Starship IFT 2 to activate the flight termination system.
