  1. Rank table updated, with Kerbulan ranks as have been revealed to date. Cadets in Kerbfleet work the same as anywhere else I suppose; until they graduate they do not have a commission and are not in the command structure. They may technically be superior to NCOs like sarjints, but that hasn't come up in the comic so it doesn't exist in canon Kerbfleet comprises the Fleet Service (which is like an Earth navy), Air Service, KSMC and possibly other branches but none are canon yet. All branches are theoretically equivalent, but the Fleet Service tends to dominate due to the nature of space exploration. Many officers and crew from the old Kerbal Sea Program transferred to the Space Program in Year Zero, notably Captin (later Admiral) Shirley Kerman and Majer (later Flight Director) Gene Kerman. There is no canon on whether the Sea Program is still in operation. It's entirely possible that a 'next generation' of officers is still cruising Kerbin's seas in some sort of modified KSS Enterprise. But there is as yet no canon supporting the existence of any sea officer named Jean-Luc Kerman, and any rumors that I've created a bald-headed Kerbal texture map are entirely unsubstantiated. ETA: Other than appearance mods I'm using USI-LS, USI-Core and Planetary Base Systems
  2. If anyone is having trouble finding the current release for this excellent mod, it's here (OP points to defunct Kerbalstuff repository)
  3. I love it! Wernher the young and reckless! I sort of made Gene my protoJeb. And hey, it's not like I can fully claim that version of Wernher as my own, I see it as more or less the "stock" WvK because of the natural von Braun parallel. Jim I wouldn't make them any longer. People are always going to be hungry for moar, but putting that many images in one post is going to make load times long on every page and require hella lotta scrolling. As you know my choice is to make updates of only a few pages at a time, thus taking several updates to do one chapter. There's no one right answer of course, but I don't think going longer is a good one
  4. One factor that may affect the analysis here: I do not intend to use any "fuel shuttle". Oh, and @Geschosskopf your comment reminds me I really should have had Wernher call someone "bullet head" during the Zwischenspiel. Missed opportunity there
  5. Plotting/teasing: The "base" visible to the left of the sun is Intrepid. Total burns for Jool capture add up to about 1200, which is half the remaining fuel. Will correct for a lower Tylo flyby once I see where the earlier maneuvers put me; then will evaluate the final capture on entering the system. Smart move is probably to make for Bop or Pol to refuel the ship before going on to the major moons.
  6. "Where is it"? Well, in my head, obviously. There's a lot of canon that isn't written down here yet, one kerb can only do so much I'll tell you the order of ranks that have been stated in the comic so far. There's no canon beyond that at this point; 'Commander' is roughly a Kerbfleet Captin, and a Centurion is sort of like a Looty Comder, but I don't really have a 1:1 map worked out. Commander Sub-Commander Centurion Legate Sub-Legate
  7. I name things how I name things. Calling any Kerbin Federation or Kerbfleet craft by the same name as an Earth weapon isn't exactly in line with the story I'm telling.
  8. Outstanding. I was out of likes when I first saw it, but Spacecraft Friday reminded me to give it another look.
  9. And finally, the K-86 Sabber operated by the Air Service of the Kerbal Sea Program in the years before Year Zero. These were deployed on aircraft carriers such as KSS Enterprise (KV-6). Majer Gene Kerman was a notable K-86 pilot involved in the "Paperclip Incident" that brought Wernher von Kerman to Kerbin, and began what we now know as the Kerbal Space Program. It's really not a bad little plane, fun to fly and just subsonic in level flight. Action group '0' toggles thrust reverse. Theoretically you could use that to try to land on the carrier. No, I have never successfully landed it on the carrier. And sorry, you can't have the carrier yet, I'm still using it
  10. Next here's the KE-262 Stormbird, a Messerschmidt ME-262 replica operated by the evil Kerbulan Empire (note pilot's evil beard and vaguely authoritarian uniform!) Here's the page showing it in action. It's underpowered, topping out at about 150 m/s in level flight, but it handles well and is faster than the piston-engined fighter planes of the Alliance. Or it would be, if I had bothered to downloaded a propeller mod and built said aircraft. Weapons and diabolical laughter not included.
  11. If I ever add that, Bill will just notice a 'disturbance', and for everyone else, Sarnus was just always there.
  12. Ah, but the so-called dead so-called author never made that reference! Canonically, it is only referred to as a "jet". The Sabber designation appears only in the comments of a (living!) reader.
  13. Not a problem--it's just when it becomes repetitive, as it looked like it was going to there. Really, it's supposed to be guess who will reply next, not let's see who we can make reply next. So anyway I just checked, and yes indeed the new feature works to block "so-and-so mentioned you in a topic" notifications from specific users. You hover over the user avatar, then click "ignore user" when that dialogue comes up, then check "mentions". Before this, the only way to not get pings was to ignore a user entirely. Much better. Am wondering whether this change was driven by all the pings for KasperVld (note missing @ ) et al. on that thread...
  14. Thanks @Snark, price of fame, I know, I know. I guess I must have misread this part of Kasper's announcement of the recent Forum downtime: So maybe now instead of ignoring all the content of those particular users, I can just ignore when they ping harass mention me? Will try it...
  15. Does anyone know what happened to the promised Forum feature where we could stop specific threads from sending "you were mentioned" notifications? Would save me the trouble of having to ignore a whole bunch of people in the "Guess Who We'll Harass Next?" thread
  16. It was not! I only wanted a cutesy version of Sabre! I doubt Gene's knowledge of Deutschekerb goes that deep, but of course Wernher would definitely get it
  17. I know, I know! And I even put outside help in italics! In their defense I think most readers still running lines through Google Translate to figure out stuff like "Mein Bart!"
  18. And here's the W-2 Vengeance missile that Wernher used to prolong the World War on Kerbulus, giving rise to what we now know as the Kerbulan Empire. Pretty simple V-2 replica: there's a probe core and reaction wheels under the fairing. ETA: Whoops, that particular craft file does not have reaction wheels. But you can put as many as you want in there yourself! Or leave them out, and use the historically accurate "run out of fuel and hope it hits something" guidance system! It's up to you!
  19. I've posted a link to the complete Zwischenspiel on the front page, and also started a thread to release the various crafts used in it. Der Fliegenstrudel is up now; I'll also post the W-2 Vengeance missile, the KE-262 Stormbird, and Gene's K-86 Sabber.
  20. Just completed a very fun bit of backstory explaining how Wernher von Kerman came to be a part of the Kerbal Space Program--paralleling the real world Project Paperclip that brought Wernher von Braun to the United States. Along the way we explained some of the lingering mysteries of KSP... or did we? The craft I used were loads of fun to build and fly, and so I'm sharing! First up, here's Der Fliegenstrudel, the saucer-like craft Wernher used to escape the evil mirror planet Kerbulus and journey to Kerbin. It features a single LV-N engine, a parachute, and landing gear. Disclaimers/ Restrictions: There is a lot of fuel, but no fuel lines--manual transfer required. The pilot can exit the craft, but he won't be able to get back in. Boarding is allowed only in the VAB. The LV-N does not typically survive re-entry. Launch system not included. However I have it on good authority that you can get it to space on top of a slightly modified W-2 missile (coming soon!)
  21. KSS Intrepid: ...carries internally an SSTO floatplane, a 40-ton mining shuttle, two RCS-powered lander/orbiters, four scansats, two expendable atmospheric probes, a rover and a mini tugprobe. One launch for the ship, one each for the SSTO and miner, and three carries by cargo SSTO to load the probes, RCS landers and rover.
  22. I suppose it's possible--we have to hope there aren't any Kerbals with views similar to the evil Wernher doppleganger killed in that strudel explosion! I considered showing you the newspaper headline following that accident: "PASTRY DISASTER! "NOTHING LEFT BUT HIS CHIN" SAY WITNESSES!" Thank you! The Intrepid can receive but not transmit; we've seen panels with Gene speaking to the crew over the radio. Gene knows this, so we can suppose he wouldn't send the kmail if he didn't think they would get it. Nope, indeed! They've only heard Wernher's story, which comes from his real experiences and carries no metaphysical consequeces (as far as we know!) Like @Just Jim mentioned, the Trek Mirror baddies are for the most part pretty dumb, and I'm enjoying that source material immensely.
  23. And there we go! So, a confession: I did not expect to have Val know anything at all about the Kerbulans until... well, let's just say there were going to be sound effects in that panel. But as the story developed, I realized it had to go this way. Gene Kerman is no dummy, and neither is she. How will this affect what unfolds in the Jool system? I guess we'll all find out together! Hopefully I answered all the questions in this update...oh wait! Here's another that just came in: Annnd I'm gonna have to ask for your agonizer, @Angel-125
