Have you ever done something really cool completely by accident?
razark replied to severedsolo's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Screwing around one day, putting a capsule out at the limits of Kerbin SOI. Eventually, brought it back. Periapsis was less than 70 km, but not by much, when I ran out of fuel. After a long series of aerobrakings, I finally reentered and splashed down within visual range of KSC. Another time, I was mucking about, built a big rocket, launched straight up. Never figured out what the maximum altitude was, since I ran into the Mun. -
Indeed. Film/TV is a visual art. Looking good > realism. Besides, if it wasn't well properly lit, you couldn't see the actors that they paid so much for. (The same reason that helmets are so rare in film and TV, even though if you could protect one part of your anatomy, it would be your head.)

The ale would be the easiest to start with. Lagers need a lower temperature to ferment. A lot of people modify refrigerators with an added temperature controller for lagers, so it's more complicated. I've never done one yet. Bourbon? That's getting into distilling, and I've got no practical knowledge there.
-
I have not, mainly because I've never heard of it before. Looks interesting, though. I might have to give it a try. It certainly opens up a lot of new options beyond the extract route.

No, I keep looking in threads and wondering where posts went, just to find them in another thread. -

Does the chair wish you to be someone who advises students, or someone who lies to students? -
I don't care, I'm kicking this back to life. After nearly a decade break, I found a homebrew store in the area, and I'm starting to get back into the hobby. I've currently got a 2.5 gallon batch of mead in the secondary, and I'm wondering what to brew for my first batch back. It's been a while, but I remember I've done a brown ale and a stout that I liked before. I don't particularly like the flavor of hops, so I'm avoiding any IPAs. Anyone got any good recipes for an extract brewer looking to start up again?

totm march 2020 So what song is stuck in your head today?

Being so used to the correct original version, this one just sounds wrong to me. Not "bad", just "wrong". For some reason: I have to admit, he does a pretty good Sinatra. -
Alright, another batch of complaints: Over the last month or so, it's become apparent to me that I have lost several skills over the last couple decades. How to find an apartment. How to select a lawyer. How to shop for groceries. How to cook for less than four people. Seriously. I only know how to cook in large quantities anymore. I fear the day (and month(s) following) I have to deal with the 20 lb. turkey in the freezer!

I've only seen the first two seasons of it. A friend of mine loves the show, and loaned me his DVDs. I was only able to sit through about one and a half seasons of it, but he promised me he'll find the rest of season two, and if he ever gets any more of them, he'll let me borrow them. @adsii1970: Yeah, Archie did have his moments over Meathead*. But taking the whole balance into consideration, he does seem to be getting the short end. *And those moments tended to be pure gold for the series, too. -

And then get people complaining about how you're neglecting your children. -

I was not the best student when I was in college. I failed my share of classes. There were some that I struggled with, and some I just wasn't ready for*. But at least I could admit when it was my own damn fault. It's not the teacher's fault when they wake you up in the middle of the test to advise you to drop the class. And it's somewhat odd when the professor is surprised you actually bothered to show up for the final exam. I told him it was practice for next time. Sometimes, you just can't make sense of it. Try doing the same after fifteen years. Don't spend too much time dwelling on it. Give it some time, do something for yourself, and eventually it'll pass. Still sucks, though. *When transferring schools, it's really important to know that what was covered at one school may not be the same as what was covered at another. This is vitally important when considering prerequisites. -

I'm not so sure about that. There is much evidence to the contrary. -
I'm pretty sure it would happen here. "Great. Another astronaut?"
-
I'm not extremely worried about data loss. There's very little on the machine that doesn't exist elsewhere, and none of it is really critical. But yeah. Backup might be good to do, if only for convenience. Not recently, but I try and remember to do it every so often.
-
That's a good question. The machine was a refurb, so I'm not actually sure.

@adsii1970: I'll look into some of that, maybe later when I get home. I'm not sure how much will apply, since I'm running Win7. I doubt it. From being off for several days, I turned it on yesterday and saw the problem simply trying to open Explorer (not IE... the file system thing) and run Firefox. If it's going to occur, it starts happening immediately. After I restarted, I was running Chrome, Firefox, Flight Simulator, and assorted other things for hours. If that didn't overheat it and the previous load did, I would be extremely surprised. I know if I run KSP, it get quite warm (Wait, I'm not supposed to use the exhaust air to brew tea?), but I haven't seen these issues previously. What gets me is the inconsistent nature of the problem.
-
Nothing I've tried has found anything. That was one of my first thoughts. (Not ruling it out yet, though.)
-
I haven't noticed anything during the times it's having issues. There's nothing eating up CPU or memory. That doesn't really fit the problem. Like I said, I boot up, and it's acting up. Reboot, and it's fine. When it's fine, it'll run damn near anything I throw at it. When it's acting up, it chokes on Notepad.
-
Yeah, but it seems like it's a 50/50 shot if any time I boot it's going to work. I was not aware. I'll have to try and remember that one.

No. Under normal operations, such as internet browsing and local file operations. Sometimes, it will lag between clicking on things and responding to it. Click the volume control, and a minute later, the control appears. Try to open a folder, and Explorer freezes for a couple minutes, with the "(Not Responding)" message on the window title. Click the Steam icon on the task bar, and then a long wait before it actually opens. Hit ctrl-alt-del, and there's a delay before it responds. Then select "Task Manager", go brew a cup of coffee, make a sandwich, eat it, clean up the dishes, come back, and it might have opened. Click on a different cell in Excel, and it takes a couple minutes to recognize it. Browser tabs freeze, again with "(Not Responding)" on the title. Pretty much makes the entire system unusable. Then reboot, and it's acting fine.

Legos are good. I had many when I was a kid. Now my kids have a whole bunch and their grandparents' house. And at my house. And I recently got the Lego Saturn V. Somewhere I have the smaller Saturn V/Apollo CSM/LM set they released a decade and a half ago.

I hate trains on the road. My laptop has started intermittently running very slow/freezing up.
