What's the first thing that you do in KSP? Your first craft? How's it?
Greenfire32 replied to ARS's topic in KSP1 Discussion
First on the docket: geosync comsats. Establish a network of communication. Second: robotic missions. Look for good ISRU locations, send rovers, map the area. Begin planning manned missions. Third: start over because the game has updated in a major way and tell Jeb (again) that he won't be going to Duna (again). -

I'm not a super huge action group user. Most of my actions are for when I need to deploy a large amount of solar panels or if I need to switch from air-breathing to oxidizer in more than one engine. Other than that, I do a lot of stuff manually.

Do not complete orbit, do not collect 200 funds. Communications error in "your favor." (Due to interrupted communications with Mission Control, your colony never received the order to abort the landing. Enjoy your extended vacation on Duna!) Catastrophic Malfunction! Due to foreseen circumstances (Jeb), your craft has experienced sudden deconstruction in mid flight. (Go to splashdown. You must remain on splashdown until you roll doubles)

Why does KSP need to be extremely expensive
Greenfire32 replied to Hans Kerman's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Me personally, I think the amount of depth KSP offers is only worth between $15-20. Once you figure out how to break orbit, there is...well...not much. You can always manufacture your own fun of course, and there are mods to satisfy, but... Now if there was actual stuff on all these planets and things to do with them (stuff like colonization), then I could see a $40 price tag being justified. However, on the flipside, I also don't think that KSP in its current form is "extremely expensive." -
KSP 2 Would Have Microtransactions
Greenfire32 replied to llanthas's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Ok, hypothetically let's say "KSP 2: The Kerbaling" is in development and for the sake of the argument let's say that micro transactions are going to be a part of it. KSP is very much a niche game. I know sometimes we like to think it isn't, but it is. On the whole, it's core audience is comprised of a group of people who have an invested interest in space travel and not just an "ooh lasers and hyperspace, coooool" level of interest. Couple that with these people also tend to be slightly older than what is considered "target audience" in the general gaming sphere. I'm not saying that there are no young KSP players, just that the ratio of young/old favors more older players than younger ones with KSP specifically (old as in 25 or older, remember this is gaming we're talking about here. Most target audiences are 18-25). Including micro transactions is a recipe for monumental disaster for two reasons: 1) The older audience is less likely to buy in, because they tend to have more real-life responsibilities or value things differently. They also recognize that patience is a thing and are usually willing to wait for good things more so than when they were younger and wanted everything right away. 2) A niche game for a niche market is not going to print money no matter what. It can be successful and it can make you rich, but it isn't going to be the next big phenomenon. Further limiting your already limited sales by locking content behind hidden paywalls is only going to drive money away, not generate it. ------ All in all, as far as my opinion goes, if there were to be micro transactions in KSP 2, I wouldn't purchase it. KSP is plenty good enough for me.- 182 replies

Zero optimization
Greenfire32 replied to RealGecko's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
I don't know about anyone else, but I've played KSP from the time before the Mun was even in the game to now and I've done it all on the same machine. KSP's performance is vastly, vastly, vastly, vastly, vastly better than it used to be. So...optimizations have definitely taken place. Perhaps there's something in the near-200 mods you have installed causing the game to not take advantage of the newer hardware? I feel like you would get a cleaner comparison between a vanilla KSP on the old machine and a vanilla KSP on the new one. Also, this part of the forum is for unmodded installs... -
I play almost exclusively sandbox, so in-game-years really isn't a factor for me. I usually start a new save after every major update when there's lots fixed or added to the game just because I've had bad experiences with trying to salvage a wonky mess from version to version to version.

Can we get a single-page start screen?
Greenfire32 replied to xtoro's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Hmm. I've never really thought of this as a problem. I'm not opposed to a single-screen solution. I'm just not really in support of it either. I guess I'm good with either being the case. Key phrase detected, run program: red_flag_protocol.exe Statement: "Should be pretty easy to do..." Response: "Then do it yourself" ------- In all seriousness, I'm sure if you were able to drum up enough support for this someone would build a mod. I'm just not sure if this is something that absolutely has to be stock. There are bigger fish to fry at the moment than a graphical overhaul of the main menu screen(s). -

Thoughts on a Gaming Controller for KSP?
Greenfire32 replied to Speed_Kerman's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Me personally, I cant see KSP running very well on a gamepad style of controller. Either keyboard & mouse or a flight stick with mouse input for building crafts. And I say this as someone who is primarily a controller-based gamer. It's just that some games lend themselves better to certain controllers in my opinion. IF you do want to get a gamepad controller for PC, I would personally spring for the Xbox 1 controller as you can pretty reliably use that for just about any game. It's button layout is standardized and 99% games will either be built specifically for it or have respectable support for it. I know it's a little spendy, but I'm a HUGE believer in future-proofing yourself. I've had bad experiences with generic brand controllers, so I usually don't buy them. -
...all the more reason to make existing planets more interesting versus adding more desolate wasteland planets. The absolute BEST case scenario for having a new planet is "I've been there," but the absolute BEST case for a planet that actually HAS something worth exploring is "I've seen the waterfalls of laythe, the geysers Eeloo; I've seen the darkest caverns of Moho and the wide canyons of Duna." The point is this: simply adding another rock to plant a flag on will result in just that. A rock with a flag on it. But if we take the rocks we already have and make them hold secrets ready to be discovered, you make the game exponentially more meaningful. I mean, and I'm being serious here, with all this talk of "a new gas giant," what are you going to get out of it? You put a satellite in orbit, you take pictures, but you cant ever land on it. Go to Jool and take a picture. Now swap the texture to something else and do the same. You've now experienced Jool 2: The Jooling. At least by adding features to the planets we've already got, we get to add MEAT to our potatoes. And I, for one, think that makes for a far better meal.

Orbital decay?
Greenfire32 replied to Pawelk198604's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
There was a bug a few versions ago that actually resulted in precisely this, and it wasn't NEARLY as fun as you think it would be. It was a pain, it was a headache, and if you had multiple flights/stations, forget it. Pack up and go home, because Timewarp's gonna kill ALL your Kerbals. Now if you want to mod it in, by all means go for it, but I will never ever ever ever ever ever ever support this in stock. EVER. Sorry. -

KSP Crashes on Startup
Greenfire32 replied to SilentGunner13's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
My immediate thought is one of your mods didn't install correctly and that there's nothing wrong with the base game. How many are you running (quite a few I'm assuming since CKAN is involved)? IF it's feasible, either redownload the entire collection to a new and separate directory (just to make sure there's no "file contamination") and try running again, or *shudder* install your mods one at a time until you find the offender. And I don't know if this ever got fixed, because I don't use CKAN myself, but I remember there being a problem where CKAN would download mods that were both compatible and not compatible with version XYZ of KSP so that could be the problem as well. -
Couple things you could do: 1) Send relays. Make sure you understand the difference between a direct and a relay antennae. If you're having trouble bridging the gap, you need to bounce your signal across a relay. Some antennae are also combinable, meaning their signal strength grows if you use more than one on the same craft. Right clicking inside the vehicle editor will tell you this information. 2) You should have at least 3 satellites with Kerbin-capable communications in orbit. This is so that even when Kerbin is below the horizon of your target planet, the signal can be bounced around the planet, and thus, communication remains intact. My standard practice is to have 3 relays in geosync orbit (if possible) evenly spaced around the planet and in cases where geosync isn't possible I usually have 3 low-orbit relays and 1 high-orbit relay. 3) Upgrade your tracking station. If you're playing career (and it looks like you are) the tracking station is only capable of so much. It's entirely possible that your current one is never going to be able to perform what you need it to. Good luck!

long long long time ago: Tried leaving the Mun. Didn't have the juice to make orbit, exited the lander and boosted my sub-orbital path as much as possible while still leaving some EVA fuel for moving. Trajectory=ballistic. Managed to get a rendezvous using my command pod in orbit (luckily it was directly overhead my kerbal at the time). Command pod swooped down, Kerbal got in. Command pod burned for orbit. Lander lithobraked with extreme prejudice. Command pod successfully returned to Kerbin. Something, something, any landing you can walk away from.

Kommunity Space Station 1.4.1
Greenfire32 replied to 53miner53's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I second this. -
I mean...it's KSP... More than half of this game's reputation comes from things failing in spectacular ways. There's even an entire thread dedicated to "you will not go to space today." Yes, Challenger and Soyuz 1 were massive tragedies, but I highly (I'll say again: HIGHLY) doubt Squad was poking fun at those specific instances...
