  1. Probably because they built it piecemeal from the ground up. They started with a Lego rocket builder, with arbitrary masses and sizes, and had it work in a 2d world, using earths gravity. Then they realized they needed a globe to fly off of, and scaled that to match the parts, instead of retooling all the work they previously did. By the time anybody said “Hey, this and this are not right”, it was too late to go back and fix them without a complete rebuild. It’s amazing how far they actually got without ever having to restart from scratch with all the knowledge they gained. There’s posts around here somewhere detailing the old design story. I think even @Moach had posted a pic of the literal back of a napkin sketch they laid out for the process.
  2. Please see this thread for this discussion:
  3. @Devblaze, I’ve split your question out of the thread it was in, and placed it in a very much more appropriate location. I also added the title. Split from “Forum update from your moderators” thread.
  4. If multiple threads on a topic exist, please do not start another one.
  5. If they valued the community, do you think they would have shuttered the studios?
  6. If you are worried about people altering your posts, you can do yourself the favor of backing up your own posts, and then if an issue arises you can compare them to the way back machine. Which, as it happens, is already scraping the forums for its content and archiving it. If there were any valid legal arguments to be made, they would have been made. As for privacy, there is no personal or private account information available to members or the public at large in any public facing section of the forums. Any information that would be public facing was added by the user themselves with the intent of it being public facing (locations, website, etc info as found on the profile page). And as such, since any group that is scraping the forums for archive have no access anything that could validate an account (password, email, etc), there is no way they could use this data for anything but archives. If there is a new forum, it will not have ongoing threads available to post in. The old threads will be available for reference only. There would be no way to verify each account on a new forum is the same user as the account of the same name on this forum. Account names would have to be new and unconnected to the old ones. We also have an unwritten policy that drama that occurs outside the forums, say on discord or Reddit, should remain on discord and Reddit. Now, if we could get back to the issue of having members try to coordinate this effort, that would be much appreciated.
  7. So moved. Next time just report your post and what needs done. We’ll get to it much faster that way.
  8. Hey, 1) no reason to get hostile. 2) Wrong thread. An aside is fine, but if you want to have a full discussion, start a thread in S&S. Let’s keep this thread clear for open communication with the moderators. A lot of people follow this thread and getting a number of notifications for nothing is kinda annoying. Edit: some content after this post has been removed.
  9. @Deddly @Snark @adsii1970 @Dman979 @James Kerman @Angelo Kerman @OJT @Geonovast @18Watt @Supernovy @goldenpeach @Starhawk and others too that the forums aren’t bringing up the @ for. We don’t work in a vacuum, while you may not see them posting a lot, they’re there, and it’s a team effort. It’s just a few of us that tackle the visible side of moderating. We just ask your patience in this trying time, we’re in this for the long haul. We fully plan on being here for a while.
  10. How about we use any of the dozens of threads we already have going?
  11. There’s a redirect from the announcement page. All other discussion about this will be directed here. There won’t be a need to move this anywhere else at this time.
  12. Discussion regarding planning of recovering the forums in case the worst happens should be directed here: But I will reiterate this point: The moderator team is in this for the long haul. We have no tangible evidence to suspect the forums will be shut down anytime soon. We are treating this as business as usual. But we’re also not naive enough to assume this is 100% guaranteed.
  13. I have merged these two threads, I ended up swapping thread Title and OP in the process, as it better describes the situation. There might be a little confusion to the merge, but it’s early enough we’ll get over it.
  14. Remember folks, this thread is to talk about the future of the forums, not to rehash what has already happened, discussed ad nauseam in other threads.
  15. We do not know this, yet. It could just be they have not yet deemed it worth their time yet to say hi. As for the forums shutting down, we don’t know. But it makes sense that when TTi acquired KSP, they moved the forums to a block of servers they use for such purposes. As long as they keep those servers running in general, there’s a good chance the forums will be fine. But it also makes sense to start a backup for archival purposes.
  16. The redaction is what the user said. It is not edited. Otherwise it would say edited. Please keep discussion in this thread to one that relates to the future of the forums.
  17. While this sentiment might be true, it’s not helpful for the scope of this discussion and for the future of the forums. Let’s keep this type of talk to other threads please.
  18. *capybara But anyways, this won’t see fruition for at least 5-10 years.
