Much like in Kerbal space program, by the time humans need to refer to the apoapsis of Apophis, they'll say "the apoapsis of Apophis"

Minmus Direct - Flying Directly to the Inclined Orbit
Superfluous J replied to XLjedi's topic in KSP1 Tutorials
I just launch into an equatorial orbit and then transfer to the nearest node out at Minmus. It takes longer time in game but less in the real world and for me, real world time is far more important. If anything, using up game time is actually a benefit. -
totm april 2020 What nice thing happened to you today?

First comment in over a week on YouTube was "amazing content you deserve more subscribers" I of course agreee with them -
Why I can't do anything!
Superfluous J replied to a topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
That is not normal. I would suspect a bad install or mod or mod intersection. I can't think of a setting or toggle that would screw up the game in so many ways. Maybe post a log file from start of the game to when the problem occurs. -
When to move from 1.25m to 2.5m parts.
Superfluous J replied to Chequers's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
A good rule of thumb is to try to get about 2000-3000m/s out of a stage before dropping it. This means generally that your rockets will be 2 stages to orbit, and that 2nd stage may take you to Mun but you'll need a couple in space to do anything else. The vast majority of my payloads are 1.25m. I only go up to 2.5m when I start sending 3 Kerbals places. However, once you start having trouble launching something off the pad with 2000m/s and a decent (I think about 1.3 or so personally) TWR, it's time to make the launch stage larger. Then you'll want to launch more, and you'll need to make the orbit stage larger. then you'll want more, and that launch stage won't cut it and you'll have to up it to 3.75m. If you ever do a Jool 5 (I recommend it! Though go to Duna and Gilly and Dres first, they'll give you tons of personal experience that will make Jool a lot less daunting) you may even get to the point where you're launching 3.75m things into orbit. then you'll be wishing you had 5m parts. (psst. There are mods with 5m parts) -
Not quite. You can disable "require full transmission" on the antenna. You'll end up with LESS credit (returned science) you will still get SOME credit. And if you're not doing a flyby, you can take the experiment again and transmit it over and over to eventually get full (transmittable) credit. Not that any of that makes any real life sense, but hey it's possible to do

Will KSP 2 have better file/data formats?
Superfluous J replied to kfsone's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
In the (not-so) fictional universe where the programmer made a typo. IF you get in the habit of writing it "if string value == variable" then your typos generate errors. If you get in the habit of writing "if variable == string value" then your typos generate bugs that you may not notice until a long time later. -
Hmm. Mine's actually surprisingly close to Eve. 30ap 28pe. Maybe I should do similar.

While we're talking about asteroids, I took a (stock) SENTINEL contract to find 14 asteroids with 20 degree tilts or more. It has like a 600 year time limit. I have no mods that affect asteroids or contracts, except JNSQ. I don't have Contract Configurator installed, even. I've gone about 8 years past the day I took the contract, and maybe 7 years since putting the SENTNEL scanner in place (it matched the orbit, yes ) and so far have found 0 asteroids. Granted, I'm only 1% or so of the way through the time limit but I'm starting to wonder if maybe none of these asteroids will be generated.

KSP ps4 merge two ships
Superfluous J replied to DarthCupOfNoodle's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
To get to subassemblies: Click the |||> button in the very upper left. Click the green button with the rocket going to the right. This is the subassembly area. To make a subassembly: Have a "ship portion" that you want to be a sub-assembly. Like a satellite, with decoupler attached to it. On your main ship, this decoupler will detach the satellite from the ship. The 4 floaty buttons in the upper left (place, translate, rotate, reroot), click the 4th one (reroot) Click the decoupler that will eventually detach your satellite from the main ship. Follow the above instructions to get to subassemblies. Drag your ship (by the decoupler that is now the root) to the little box in the bottom of the subassembly area. Name it, etc. Here's a random image I found online: -
CommNet Ground Station Editing Mod
Superfluous J replied to Drew Kerman's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
I believe it's in the same place the planet config file is. i.e. it doesn't exist I don't think so. They tend to "just work" and I for one would be just as happy if Kerbin was one big commnet station. -
You're the exact person who should stay home. I saw a great analogy somewhere. When you're driving down the road and see an ambulance coming fast behind you with its lights on, you pull over. You are not worried about yourself at this point. You don't think the ambulance is coming to get you and take you to the hospital, and you're not worried that they'll careen into your car. You're just doing your small part for the greater good by staying out of the way, so you don't accidentally cause more problems for others. Social distancing is like pulling over for the ambulance. You likely won't get any personal benefit from it, but for those in need it helps a LOT.

Will KSP 2 have better file/data formats?
Superfluous J replied to kfsone's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
Amusingly that was the example I was going to use, it's the only one I can think of and it stopped way way long ago. Like possibly before KSP 1.0. I remember it so well because it used to be such a pain to upgrade, mostly because I kept forgetting to save the settings file and lost it. -
Will KSP 2 have better file/data formats?
Superfluous J replied to kfsone's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
I thought they already did? All the mods I can think of place settings (that are likely to change) either in the settings.cfg or your persistent.sfs file. I can't think of one that did so in Gamedata, though I'm sure some exist. -
You wouldn't want them just reporting activity to the police. Especially if you were the police. They get enough bogus calls as it is.

Need Help figuring out nodes
Superfluous J replied to Readerty2007's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
How does it compare to the drawn orbit in map mode? I never ever pay attention to the numbers (except to tell contracts apart when I have multiple for the same world) and just make my satellite's orbit match the drawn orbit lines in map mode. Easier, less error prone, and works every single time. Making sure you're going the correct way is also important, but this is also easier using the drawn orbit line. If you look at it closely you'll see it's spinning in the direction you want to be orbiting. -
For the same reason warp drives are part of Star Trek but warp drives don't exist in ksp. Same with any other fictional drive that is not at least proven to exist, if not actually exist IRL (with changes in game of course, to account for the different universe and gameplay considerations).

The line to check out at Costco 30 minutes after opening was the length of the store, twice. Started at the registers, went to the back of the store, then turned around came back forward. Pretty quick though. And everybody was nice and friendly.

Correct. It meant neither that it happened not that it didn't happen. It meant that the subject is not to be talked about.

Just got "permission" to work from home until this whole thing blows over. I put that in quotes because the news from corporate was pretty clear in that if we can work from home (I can) we are allowed to but must inform (not ask permission of) our manager. But it was nice of him to agree with me that I could
