[1.0.x] HoloDeck - Sandboxed Flight Simulations
Superfluous J replied to enneract's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I like the name. I instantly know what it is every time it comes up in the list of threads. "KSP Simulation Mode" is such a boring name I dozed off while typing it. -
[1.3.0] Kerbal Engineer Redux 1.1.3.0 (2017-05-28)
Superfluous J replied to cybutek's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
[quote name='ctbram']Can someone please describe what I need to do to get the \ to toggle KER on and off back please? I cannot find these config menus nor do I know what to change even if I find them[/QUOTE] It's one of the best hidden options page in all of KSP Modding. I have done it several times and I can't even remember all the steps. I do remember that you need to be in the VAB, and then you need to edit the layout of the buttons. One of the buttons you can add is "Options" or something like that. Once you've added the button, you exit out of that part of KER and then the button is on your KER window. -
The Name Change Thread (WARNING! ONE TIME ONLY!)
Superfluous J replied to Souper's topic in Kerbal Network
Okay time to take the plunge, with the new forum change imminent. Please change my username to [B]HMV[/B] and thank you! -
[quote name='Archgeek']I see BB code won't be supported in new posts...will there be some analogue in functionality to spoiler tags? Lacking an imgur account I've found them very useful when posting images.[/QUOTE] All we have right now (Unless I missed something) is what [URL="http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/140126-Forum-Migration-Nov-27th!?p=2307467&viewfull=1#post2307467"]KasperVld said here[/URL] (at the bottom). [quote name='KasperVld']The markup support in the editor I'm not sure of, I'll have to dig deeper for information on that.[/QUOTE]

[quote name='r4pt0r']how did this thread last 27 pages? [quote name='Francois424']Thanks for the notes 5th. Missing your KSP videos btw... finish Fallout4 quickly :sticktongue:[/QUOTE] Haha I just recorded a couple non-Fallout videos. Of course, they were Banished but hey. :D -
MORE Kerbal Last Names!
Superfluous J replied to Sampa's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
What I don't like is that it's redundant. It serves no in-game purpose and takes up space. They're not royalty. You don't have to list all their titles every time you say their name. Either make it matter or take it out. -

NERV Ejection Altitude
Superfluous J replied to More Boosters's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
[quote name='More Boosters']Maybe I'm just underestimating how wide transfer windows are then. Is the 300-400 dv you save with the Oberth effect worth the hassle though? I'm sure I lost at least 600 dV as steering losses during a 1.4k burn and splitting burns would only further reduce the accuracy.[/quote] If you had a 1.4k burn and actually burned 2k, you're not doing something right. Also, splitting burns doesn't reduce the accuracy any more than using a little draggable tool with pull-knobs on it to plan your burn. Just re-make the maneuver node in between each burn and you'll be fine. If you lose more than 100dV due to this I'd be shocked. If you lose less than a dozen I'd not be surprised. I've never bothered to do the math, or even check afterward. It WILL save a LOT of fuel compared to doing a 15-minute burn at periapsis in one go. [quote name='More Boosters']Edit: Funnily enough Alexmoon LW Planner mentions a slightly lower ejection DV (yes you still need to get up there I know) for a 500 by 500 orbit compared to a 100 by 100 one.[/QUOTE] There was a thread on here discussing... I don't remember the term. ________ orbits. I also don't remember the exact orbit to go for for the cheapest ejection, mostly because (as you stated) you have to get there, and it's still cheaper to just do the whole thing as low as possible. Note, though, that "as low as possible" may very well be 500km up if you are doing it all in one burn. -
NERV Ejection Altitude
Superfluous J replied to More Boosters's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
One trick is to split the burn. You have to do the last X m/s (where X is about 1000m/s less than your total burn) all at once because once you eject from Kerbin's SOI you can't swoop around for another try, but if your total burn is - say - 1500 m/s you can do one 500m/s burn, loop around, do another ~500m/s burn (just don't escape SOI), swoop around, and then do a 3rd one to eject. You have to start early (multiple days in some cases considering you're talking about orbiting up past Minmus' orbit) and watch out for Mun (and to a lesser extent Minmus) encounters, but if you find that kind of thing fun (and let's face it we find that kind of thing fun) it's well worth at least doing once. -
[quote name='TheCardinal']By the way, aren't we ALL roleplaying in a way when playing KSP?[/QUOTE] While playing? Yes. I even do it in my videos a bit. But on the fourm I'm me, talking to you. I'm not a CEO of a company or the director of a space program. I'm a guy sitting at a laptop typing into a form on a webpage. They're not discouraging roleplay. They're saying they won't deal with it on the forum. And not because it's bad or RPers are bad or anything like that, but because it causes problems.

Fairings destroyed the 4th set of my rover's wheels
Superfluous J replied to More Boosters's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Did you hit F3 to see what was listed in the flight log? -
A couple thoughts and a few questions: I have never used the Rocket Builders forum. Any time I've been in there was by mistake. I have no feelings either way about it and no usable knowledge of it. I don't even understand its appeal. So, I will not comment on whether or not it should stay or go. It seems there will only be a WYSIWYG editor? There was a hint buried about 10 pages back that maybe there would be markup, just not bbcode or html, but it was never elaborated on so I'm assuming it was just a comment, not a confirmation. Will it be easier or harder to change a username after the switch? I've been teetering on the idea of changing mine, but if it's impossible come Friday I will probably just make the leap. And finally to all: It is a hard lesson to learn that these forums are not yours. You don't pay for them. You don't host them. You don't moderate them. You use them. Just like your favorite restaurant can change its menu and take away your favorite dish and you have no recourse but to voice your disapproval, a forum can change its structure, removing parts that the owners and employees feel strongly enough need removing and you have no recourse but to voice your disapproval. Many have done this here, but when it all comes down to it that's all you can do.

Superfluous J replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
[quote name='technion']Thanks for all this. The concept is quite obvious, I guess I just didn't expect it to be accurate. You're shooting at Pluto from a long way away. 0.1degrees means a lot, yet you're just looking at the position of a star and declaring you know where you are.[/QUOTE] Well they also use top of the line telescopes and lots and lots of computers. But yeah. That's essentially it. The cool part about NH? It wasn't just tracking its own position, but [b]Pluto[/b]'s. They wanted to hit such a specific spot that the current (at the time) estimates of Pluto's orbit weren't good enough, and they had to track it on the way in. -
Squadcast Summary 2015/11/19 - Dr. Turkey I Presume?
Superfluous J posted a topic in KSP1 Discussion
Every 15 minutes I drop a time stamp, so if you can find a spot in the video more easily. Something in "quotes" means it was directly said, though I frequently don't bother with that. [brackets] are those rare times where the accent barrier keeps me from understanding something, or I want to say an aside about something Dr.Turkey said about KSP development. [COLOR="#008000"]Green text is descriptions of what the good Doctor is doing in the game, with asides and commentary by me where I feel the desire[/COLOR]. If you want to watch the episode yourself, you can find it at [url]http://www.twitch.tv/ksptv/profile/past_broadcasts[/url] Squadcast was just over an hour. 0:00 Kasper co-hosted with Dr Turkey. Dr. Turkey will not put his mug on the cam. D.T. seems to be a self-censoring swearer. Which I can FREAKING appreciate. The actual video started at 7:00 They're in the office, and there are noises in the background. He's a Sips fan. As am I. He was infuriated by Sips' KSP play. As was I. [COLOR="#008000"]He starts a fresh Career Mode on Moderate difficulty. He was going to do Science but the chat got him to switch. Good choice, IMO. You are showcasing the game after all. He takes some contracts and heads to the VAB. Typical first ship.[/COLOR] 15:00 Not much to disclose today. Q: How much have you played? A: A lot, "I'm just supremely bad at games." [COLOR="#008000"]He launches, without having done his launchpad science. He does no science in the air either. He also ALMOST fails to pull the chute. He does so about 1700m off the ground, accelerating downward to 235m/s. He slows down to 10m/s at about 160m :D THEN he does the science. And recovers.[/COLOR] Q: How did QA miss the fairing collision? A: (Kasper) QA teams and Experimental test teams focus on a lot of things. And they're small groups. And they are volunteers. If 50 people are testing things like OS specific functions they literally can't test everything. [COLOR="#008000"]He got his 2 contracts, so he takes "Escape the atmosphere" and "Haul a parachute into flight," which is one of the new ones.[/COLOR] They discuss KasperVld's username. Which FTR I thought was "KasperVID" for a surprisingly long time. [COLOR="#008000"]New lanch, crazy ship with way too many solids. 3 RT-10s and an RT-5. He stages the 3 RT-10s, an dwhen they burn out he's at 10km going 840m/s. The RT-5 gets him to an Ap of about 62km, so no "space" contract. He was going too fast for the parachute contract, so he didn't get it either. And he's plummeting to the ground. Luckily the boosters had so much drag he slowed down just fine.[/COLOR] 30:00 [COLOR="#008000"]The chute flips him around but he's otherwise fine. And he even got the parachute contract. He opts to get more solid rockets. Rocket #3 uses a LF upprer stage and a decoupler to make the stage an actual stage. He also has a LF lower stage. He "launches." He throttles all the way up, and actually launches. He reaches SPAAAAAAAAAACE. He's going 1.8km/s straight up.[/COLOR] 45:00 [COLOR="#008000"]He uses time warp, goes too fast, tops out at about 400km, falls back, and hits atmo at the same 1.8km/s. Then he ditches the upper stage, leaving just the pod, 2 goos, and a very scared-looking parachute. This could be a problem. It is a problem. At 19km the pod explodes, killing Jeb. Nathan in chat suggests he launch more sideways. Good idea :D Phoicca Kerman is hired.[/COLOR] Dr. Turkey takes a phone call, about 2:30. Sadly he needs to get back to the call. Though there are still over 10 minutes left in the video. [COLOR="#008000"]He launches Phoicca, tilts a bit. He sees fire, panics, flips the ship over, and THEN throttles down. He still manages to reach space, though the contract was already gotten when Jeb died. He does get some science though. The ship comes back down at a sedate speed, and with plenty of fuel to slow down...[/COLOR] 1:00:00 [COLOR="#008000"]He kicks away the fuel he had brought down, and panics because he didn't burn. Should be fine though. He has a habit of closing the navball so I can't tell the speed very well, but he's fine. Phoicca splashes down with no issues. He buys heat shields and radial decouplers.[/COLOR] Squadcast will always be Thursdays at 6pm Eastern. Note: I'll not be able to recap them until Friday, hopefully afternoon but possibly evening, or Saturday even if I'm busy. -

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
Superfluous J replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
[quote name='andrewas']The nit is that, if you don't have your orientation, then observation of the sun and a single planet does not give you your position, the two lines can intersect anywhere on a circle. Observing a third planet gives you a complete fix, or getting your orientation from the background stars gives you a complete fix.[/QUOTE] But the ability to see every single star in the sky makes that 3rd planet unnecessary. They are giving you your orientation. -
Yes. Just put the two missing modules in each type. NOTE: This will NOT give every Kerbal every ability, and it's a bit hit-and-miss. I distinctly remember from my testing that the Scientist ability to reset containers, and the Engineers' ability to speed up ISRU, depend on the class, not the module. And (I think) there's no way to give a Kerbal all 3 classes.

[quote name='Octa']I know how tweakables work and i already do it, but still thanks  I just keep wondering why the shield carries that much ablator by default in the first place, or if there are situations where you really need 200 units of it.[/QUOTE] For the same reason that every command pod carries a full tank of monoprop even though I never use it.

Superfluous J replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
[quote name='KerbMav']I am nitpicking.[/QUOTE] It must be a small nit, as I can't see it. Are you talking about how I say one line in one post that is talking about one line, and two lines in a different post that is talking about two lines? Technically in the second post (which you quoted first) the line intersects with a sphere. [COLOR="silver"][SIZE=1]- - - Updated - - -[/SIZE][/COLOR] [quote name='ZetaX']Actually it is only always day. You would need a rather weird definition of "night" to be able to claim otherwise. Yes, it is dark, but I wouldn't take anyone seriously who closes the curtains at noon and then proclaims "night". Seeing stars also can't be it, otherwise every cloudy day is "night". And so on.[/QUOTE] Now that, right there. That's nitpicking. ;) -

Superfluous J replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
[quote name='KerbMav']But without knowing your exact orientation - or a third point/second planet - you would only know that you are somewhere on a circle, no?[/QUOTE] One nice thing about being in space is it's always night, and the stars are always out. So, you can compare where the object in question is relative to them. In fact, if you can make out the planet's disc (or bounce a laser off it) then you only need it (and the stars), as you'll know your distance AND direction. -

[quote name='Ghosty141']I really like the City Lights, could you provide a download link ? Nice writeup[/QUOTE] He said they were from the [B]Renaissance Pack v2[/B] for which Google provided [url=http://www.curse.com/ksp-mods/kerbal/225350-the-renaissance-compilation]this promising link[/url]. -
Hm, weird. Unless those chutes are named "HeatShieldParachute" or something like that (internally in thegame) I can't think of anything. And they'd have to actually show up in the staging list. I can't see why the HeatShield Decoupler config would cause heat shields to do anything other than act like decouplers. Sadly I don't use any of the mods you do. I'd love to see a few pictures, when you get up. Kids today, going to bed at 2am. It's 8am here and I'm still trucking along! ;)

Superfluous J replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
[quote name='technion']How the heck does a guidance computer work in space?[/QUOTE] You know where the Sun is, relative to you. You therefore know you are on a line somewhere. That line that goes from the sun, through you, and out to the stars. You know where any planet is, relative to you. You therefore know you are on a similar line that goes from that planet, through you, and out into the stars. You know where the planet is, relative to the Sun. You do this because you have a clock and charts. There is only one point in space, for any given time, that is exactly where those two lines intersect. You are there.
