I have found that sometimes a 'failed drive' can still be read by Linux. I have this device, a universal drive adapter, which allows me to connect just about any kind of drive to my Linux box. You should maybe look into it, try it, the adapter(s) are cheap ... saved my butt and others I've rescued dozens of times. I usually hunt for such stuff at OWC (Other World Computing), but you can shop via Google just as easily. Edit: Actually, you might find these of easier access...
