benzman
In 1984 I was working at a newspaper and the whole year was a journalistic orgy of 'How Orwell got it right' or 'How Orwell got it wrong'. The scary thing is that nearly forty years later Orwell's work is still relevant today.

The scary thing is that nearly forty years later Orwell's work is still relevant today. I think far more relevant than it was in '84. I watched dystopias come and go, and when my daughter read 1984 in school (2019?), I was thinking they should also read Brave New World—because I thought that was the most realistic dystopia of the two (I told her to also read Harrison Bergeron (very short story by Vonnegut). I keep seeing stuff currently and think, wow, Newspeak. “It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.” “Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought-crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.” “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” Edited December 27, 2021 by tater

I'm sure there are many formulas for failure, but that one is probably a 'gotcha' formula, that gets you when you think you're on to something.
