Any non 'PRE-ALPHA' footage?

Recommended Posts

HI all,

I read the developer saying that the first release wont be alpha or even beta quality but better but all I can find is footage that states it is 'PRE-APHA'.. This is concerning given that the game releases in three months. The performance in those videos is terrible..

The thing about "alpha and beta quality" is that it is an incredibly vague term, because games that are in alpha, beta, or full release can have vastly different qualities. Where did you see the developers state that their early access would be better than beta?

For performance, I agree that it is pretty terrible if you are considering the highest-end machines running it (the expectation that people with those machines have is usually that everything runs buttery smooth), but code can get optimized so extremely so fast that I wouldn't place much trust in those frame rate numbers.

This has been said a million times. Pre-Alpha just means it's from before release.

It means it's before the alpha build, where there should at least be a somewhat functional game put together.

It seems like they're going to work through the Alpha and Beta phases in just a few months though. Not sure how that's going to go.

We also know that most of the footage we've seen is at least a year old, if not more, so there's a lot that could have changed between now and then. And from what I've gathered from other posts, optimization is one of the last things to come in game development, and is typically pretty quick. If you're skeptical about the game, wait till the full release, or at least until you see some actual gameplay and review from the public once early access drops. I do hope we see some new stuff more often though, but I'm just a hype train passenger.

Oh yes the proof  of course be in the playing of it ourselves I just think it’s odd there’s only very old footage when the game is only a few months from launch.

I don't know what else to tell you; depending on how they define pre-alpha, alpha, and beta, we could get beta footage tomorrow an it not look any different than what we've already seen, if "beta" just means improvements to all the backend stuff players don't typically notice. Seeing as the game is a AAA game (going off of price, $50-$70), what other AAA games give the public early gameplay footage months before release, much less years before release (unfortunately)?

All we know now is that there's no gameplay labeled "alpha" or "beta," so all we can do is wait. And yes, the proof is in the "play it yourself" (or at least look at the current state of the game in EA). We aren't entitled to any information on the game at all, even if radio silence is poor practice from companies.

The pre-alpha inscription is an indulgence from various observable bugs. KSP1 was simply announced as version 1.0, although there was no fundamental difference with version 0.90, the number of bugs only increased.

Optimization also only really happens near the end of the development. This is so developers do not waste time optimizing what doesn't need to be optimized in the first place (which can really only be determined once everything is more or less in place). So laggy gameplay shown is more of a marketing failure then anything that indicative of actual performance at launch. The performance will also likely improve further during early access as well.

Right.

Like? I know all AAA games have CGI or "game engine" footage, but I know of none that actually show early builds and behind-the-scenes stuff like we get with KSP2.

Just a though here, but..

They could  easily* have 'cheated' by editing the footage they released to artificially remove the visible lag, but they didn't.

*OK 'easily' is probably not that accurate, it would have been quiet time consuming for some intern to do, but they could have chosen to give us an artificially good  impression.

But on the other hand, they perfectly see that users do not pay attention to FPS drops. This means that developers can not bother much with performance, and so we’ll buy it.

I don't think that's quite the mindset they have, considering they're well aware of the hundred, if not thousand-part vehicles or colonies players are going to make. Performance and overall game smoothness (no bugs, crashes, etc) are key to reaching a wide audience of casual players who won't put up with it like the hardcore fans will.

  • 1 month later...

These dastardly kids and their infernal tok tiks, I would never have seen this footage if not for you @Domonian

The KSC looks amazing, the tree lined roads etc, it's going to be an excellent area for people who don't like building rockets to play around in.
