If I had the game, I'd happily put something on one end, drive to the other end, and tell you the distance.

But I can't :D Maybe after the science update drops I'll buy the game and if no one has answered your question, I'll do it then.

Im actually confused if you have either game or not, you’re way too convincing lol

Now on to question 2: Are they flat like KSP1's runways, or do they curve to match the surface of the planet like any reasonable runway would do?

I think they are flat - based off of trying to fly a plane that did not want to, and having to go to where the ground fell away to get off it.

Course that's a couple of weeks ago and things may have changed

How long are the parallel runways in KSP2?

In 1 it was 2.5km long, but all these "land speed" videos make it look WAY longer in KSP2.

Runway looks to be at least 7km long (~4.375 miles for us americans or about 23,100ft long, which is about 12,000 feet longer than most international airport runways)

I will say we can simply measure it by driving a vehicle to one end of the runway and have the other one at the opposite end and then make the vehicles target each other for a more accurate measure

They’re a bit over 7 kilometers. That’s a lot of runway! I did Klapaucius’s drag race challenge, that’s how I know.

?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Lett

btw @Periple believe it or not but i actually made my prediction before i saw your screenshot, since i almost always scroll to the bottom.

don't think anybody knows, but the ksp 1 runway is 2.5km so maybe it's the same length?

definitely note

I looked it up and they're about 2 km longer than the longest runway on Earth. Kerbals love a good runway!

are you looking at the chinese military runway or KEDW's asphalt runways or KEDW's Sandbed runways (which are EXTREMELY LONG)?

I know one day, we're going to whine, bicker, and moan that the runways aren't long enough... just like we did in the last game lol (maybe jk)

I just looked them up from here! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_runways

Well, that's longest paved runway... I know KEDW's largest runway's look like this:

OIP.enXt7cKj-7damBV-VOs7SQHaE3?pid=ImgDe

These runways reach over 20,000 feet long easily and they technically can go much farther since its all flat. they just choose not to

@Periple Edwards Air Force Base - Wikipedia

Read the length of runway 17/35.

Spoiler

Now truly, us americans... We have gone kerbal

Based on my testing from pre-patch-one, they're flat, not conforming to the curvature of the planet. This causes a vehicle to roll from either end towards a point near the east end (I didn't realize this was what I was testing until @Sea_Kerman pointed it out)

Then they ARE flat, but the axis is near the east end.

Thanks for the confirmations about the length everyone. WOW....  I can only assume with Kerbin still being 600000km that the whole of the land at KSC is now level or nearly, otherwise you'd absolutely notice one end or both being SUPER elevated above the average terrain beside it. Probably the best solution to that problem really.

I'm no programmer but it feels like they could just slap a "runway" texture on the planet surface, instead of putting all of KSC on a big block.

Perhaps a part of the reason they haven't is because driving over flat PQS terrain at high speed tends to result in the landing gear doing a "hiccup" now and then. (probably when crossing some mesh boundaries) It tends to send my high speed rover attempts into a spin...

I've seen that on hills and whatnot (in KSP1) but like on Minmus' flats that are sections of a PERFECT sphere, I've never had that problem.

I took said rover to the Minmus flats a couple days ago and I did have the problem there as well. Picture of it, here on Ike.Ike-racing-rover.jpg

It may be those landing gear at the back specifically though, they sometimes have a tendency to sink into terrain and pop out as well, knocking the rover into the air.
